Great choices. Congratulations to the sisters, maNakkAl rangarajan, Parsala Ponnammal and other awardees. I now fondly recall the excellent singing of Charnam Iyappa (Mukhari) by the sisters, 15 years back.

Many congratulations. I could not forget their "Dwijavanthi" kriti "engu naan selvaenayya" in a Mylapore concert. Very humble duo. As a person knowing them personally, they truly deserve this. Pranams to both of them....
Out of curiosity, Did Alathur Brothers not get SK ? (since BS is the second duo to get the SK award as per the Article.

Congratulations to all the awardees!
Still seems to me that the Sangeetha Kalanidhi is the most prestigious out of the awards being given out.
The Sangeetha Kala Acharya and T.T.K Award seem to be in place for those who are very deserving but would have missed out if the Sangeetha Kalanidhi was the only award being given out. I can understand this considering the fact that all the past masters i.e. Semmangudi, Ariyuakudi, GNB ect. have all been given the SK giving the award an 'aura'.

I was under the impression that P.S. Narayanaswamy had already received the Sangeetha Kala Acharya but I am unable to find his name on the academy website: http://www.musicacademymadras.in/sangit ... charya.php
If he hasn't got one yet...then it is LONG overdue.

In the Academy website, in the year 1999, it is given as R.S.Narayanaswamy. I think it is misspelt. It must have been P.S.Narayanaswamy.

Congratulations to manakkAl sir , golden girl , sugunA mAmi and bombay sisters. I was having a faint hope of manakkAl receiving a SK award along with the golden girl , looks with this award it may be ruled out.

Better late than never they say. Late by at least 10 years, I say. The sisters should have got the award in the 90s.

Thanks to Mysore "Parvathi" Shri Shrikaantiah & cpblog.
Sister Act from 1974: http://chowdaiahandparvati.blogspot.com ... oja-c.html
I grew up listening to a lot of music of these sisters on tapes, though personally I have never been impressed by prerecorded cassettes of any artiste. Here the case is different, its an absolutely brilliant concert. Sisters are in super-duper form. Every song is a gem particularly the devaranamas. I would urge everyone to listen and enjoy. Congratulations to the sisters once again.

Thank you for your beautiful and kind words. We are sure that we are not the ones to be taking any sort of a bow, but we definitely join all of you in congratulating the Vidushis for this lifetime honor of the 'SK'.
Again, as we work through the phenomenal amount of memories left behind in "Parvathi", we wonder how one individual Mr. K. Srikantiah could have worked as an army, for thus long, in this grand 'seva' to music! It is also impossible to relate through words the atmosphere in "Parvathi" that prevailed once upon a time.
Cheers!

The parvathi concert by Bombay Sisters is excellent, quite a few songs that are not normally heard.
That first song .... I heard the alapana,
it sounded somewhat like thodi and karaharapriya and pegged it as Natakapriya ( after chart consultation ).
And, quite tickled to find out that it is indeed natakapriya. This is the first such thing for me.
I will pin this satisfaction as part of celebrating their award and remembering the occasion.
Once again, great job by cpblog and the Parvathi team. Thanks folks!

Re: Academy awards 2010
Manakkal ... TTK Award Huh !!!
Why they could have found some reason not to give this TTK stuff too and institute a TT Vasu Award or a N Murali award .
Man ! We dont know the worth of the gems we have . While I would like every hard working musician(s) to get SK at some point of time before they pass into history , not using the SK award as an occasion to pay a tribute to the greats we have in our midst is something that reveals more about MA than anything else.
As far as rules are concerned about someone having already having a Kala Acharya Award etc , I would think that getting a Kala Acharya award must be a prerequisite for getting SK.
Such are our times . We have moved from appreciating the practitioner to appreciating the Exponent / Interpreter .
There is no time to lose : Rewrite History and make up for mistakes of the past.
Even the Vatican did it with Galileo.
Fall at the feet of Lalgudi if required .
Apologise for the errors of past politico-musicians and show to the world the power that lies in atonement.
Bury those sickly issues of Sruthi and pick TRS for what he is worth, as a musician / enthusiast.
Pick up the diaries of a Chinglepet Ranganathan , pore over the details of the various parts of the country he has graced , with his teaching sessions .
Prop up SRJ on that chair just to show the world , the way forward . And the conviction we have about people who are erudite , yet can also sing their thoughts.
Give an acknowledgement to the works of the likes of PSN who have moved gracefully to high quality teaching.
Break old rules . Make new ones . Go on a time machine into 2200 and see which one is more worthwhile today.
Disclaimer - These words are uttered with the utmost respect for all the awardees of this year.

Re: Academy awards 2010
coolkarni sir,
Not all Sangeetha Kalanidhis are of equal calibre and the absence of a SK in one's career does not mean they are any less than SKs.
LGJ is the only example we need. With all due respect to their vidwat, all the SKs since his insult are mere fish swimming in the ocean that's LGJ IMHO.
So I'm not overly concerned about Manakkal Rangarajan OR TRS not getting the SK. They will remain on a higher plane than many other SKs.... at least in my mind.

BOMBAY Sisters are noted for popularising many rare and outstanding kriti-s in carnatic music apart from a huge stock of devotionals.

One of their interesting pieces was a "kalyana saappaadu" song, listing all possible eatables! Very humerous stuff.

Re: Academy awards 2010
Congratulations to Bombay Sisters on their richly deserved recognition(Disclosure: our families have known each other for over 6 decades)--their elder sister was my elementary school teacher in Bombay--their house was literally a stone's throw from our flat in matunga--My sister, the "Sisters" and Alamelu(mother of playback singer Hariharan) all were taught by Chellamani Sir-- SSI's disciple and student from the Swathi Thirunal Music Academy in Trivandrum--SSI had sent a letter of recommendation to my father to help the young man--in one of the Music Competitions held in the early fifties, all the above three of Chellamani Sir's disciples were the finalists in the competition--the contest was so close the judges had a tough time-- finally it was Alamelu(First prize),my sister(second) and the elder of the Sisters--Saroja the third winner .
It was at my father's insistence that the family moved to Chennai to pursue music as there were not many senior teachers who could guide them in Bombay--To the sisters' credit they have acknowledged this turn of events in their musical career. Their late father Mr.Chidambaram Iyer actually he deserves if not a Sangitha Kalanidhi-perhaps a Sangeetha Poshak Nipuna". My father used to say that when he made the suggestion for the shift to madras, Mr.Chidambaram was very ambivalent about moving the family, ending his career--mind you the sisters had siblings at that time with the inevitable interruption to their education--Mr. Chidambaram I believe was hesitant and worried about the "snobbery" of the Chennai higher-ups(himself being from Palghat and domiciled in Bombay). But my father persuaded him to move which he did in the early sixties. I have seen parents making sacrifices for their talented children but the late Mr.Chidambaram towers above all of them. Once with Musiri and then with TKG,they still retain a tremendous loyalty towards Musiri and TKG.
The Sisters for their part have all been very humble ,respectful towards not only towards the Senior Musicians but also their peers and youngsters--always ready to help any legitimate musical endeavour..
Lalgudi Sir once told me that when he was directed by Maha Pariyaval(the Seer of Kanchi) to raise funds for renovation of the Trinity's Birthplace in Tiruvarur, the sisters were the first to make a big(read 5 figures!!) contribution without questions or comments.
Congratulations to the sisters from an "Old Friend"!!!

Now I remember! You had mentioned it somewhere that they are family. So, your children being so good at singing is no surprise then. Of course, your sahadharmiNi sings very well too!
