Hamsadhwani sabha completes 20 yrs and hence the oldest sabhas are honoured. HIndu dt http://www.thehindu.com/arts/history-an ... 566537.ece
Perambur sangeetha sabha one of the oldest sabhas that has completed 79 years does not find a place in the list with the nett result not recognised as the one of the oldest sabhas. The only criteria for not passing through is ' not situated in South Madras' . This Perambur Sangeetha sabha has been adjudged as the best sabha and awarded with a shield recently by Tamil Nadu Govt. Why this North South attitude?

Thamizh Isai sangam which is awarded is part of North Madras as it is in Parrys corner. I dont think there is any east west or north south divide here. Please remember perambur sangeetha sabha is old, but certainly it is not frequently holding concerts like the other 9 that has been mentioned. IIRC, perambur sangeetha sabha does not hold concerts even during the annual madras kutcheri season. Also note sabhas like nadopasana, karthik fine arts ,asthika samajam etc which are each 30 + years old donot figure in the selected 9.
I am also disappointed that rasayana under

Ahh, the changing focus of Chennai geography!
Parry's Corner, I think is postally, in Chennai 001. You cannot get much more central than that. What's more, wasn't this once the cultural centre of Chennai? (I rely largely on rasikas.org for my history lessons).
Now, it is almost as if it is the northernmost border of the civilised world. Come to think of it, from my few experiences of driving further north, maybe it is!

Yes, Georgetown (in North Chennai) was an anchor place for CM long ago. Perhaps now there are only a few sabhas in North Chennai as opposed to dozens in South Madras. That may be the reason why the prominence is given to South Chennai.Nick H wrote: Parry's Corner, I think is postally, in Chennai 001. You cannot get much more central than that. Re: Hamsadhwani completes 20 years
I've been a life-member of Hamsadhwani since 2000. I was rather disappointed to see their festival schedule this year. The ticketed concerts seem to be filled largely by musicians who sing free everywhere else. This, when they have separate amateur slots preceding the main concerts as well! Promoting so-called "upcoming" artistes is all well and good, but when it is taken to inordinate proportions, one cannot help but wonder...It is not as though established musicians are boycotting them enmasse, or are demanding exorbitant sums!
As a consumer, I was feeling a tad short-changed and lo behold, only yesterday there was a letter from them asking for donations!
What they are spending their money on one wonders...
