Should it be disappointment or a welcome step by TMK. No december season this year

In an age where carnatic musicians compete to get a slot at any cost, this is a welcome step. I really appreciate and congratulate TMK for doing this. Hopefully this is the first step towards senior artists performing at four or five venues instead of singing 20 concerts during the season and spoiling their voice and yes bringing down their market value in a way. Way to go TMK.

Re: Chennai (December) Music Season 2010-2011 Schedule
1) TM Krishna is a bit of an exhibitionist, what is the need to make grand statements about not singing this year? He could just have reduced the number of concerts in December to a reasonable one, without making a hue and cry about it.
2) Also, given that he is a top ranked artiste, and that there would be people coming from all over the world to Madras for the season, surely he needs a better reason than "i don't feel like ( which is what he is saying at the end of it)" to abstain from singing. Do artistes not have some kind of responsibilities? Given what the season is today, I think one cannot think of it as any other time of year, and say I will not sing, or sing only four times. I agree that there are too many concerts, but the season has evolved into a busy, joyful time of year. Artistes know they have to work a little harder, and they should be excited about the flood of rasikas who arrive (Let this not be misconstrued as not being a critique of the overblown number of concerts that an artiste gives, but surely there is a happy mean)
I would have admired Krishna if without all this drama, he quietly reduced the admittedly mad number of concerts one sings in December. That way, his fans are satisfied and he does not spoil his voice, or his mood.

Behag - I disagree somewhat with your view. A lot of people will wonder why TM Krishna is not performing so this note direct from him clears up any rumours that would have undoubtedly been circulated.
I could imagine the following rumours!
"TM Krishna is not performing because ....
- he has lost his voice"
- sabhas didn't pay him enough"
- he didn't want his concerts recorded"
- the sabhas are boycotting him"
- he had a fight with the sabhas"
etc etc!

Mohan,
One more to your list which the gossip mill could have churned out: he's taking over the Music Academy

mohan, do you agree somewhat then?
You misunderstand, yes of course the clarification is necessary because he has grandly announced he is singing no kutcheris this December. I was saying, that he could have quietly just reduced the number he sang ( instead of disappointing fans and visitors), and issued no such grand statements.

Can't make these rasikas happy. Damned if you do, Damned if you don't !
If you take December off and schedule a few concerts in January, with an explanation as to why.... well you are an exhibitionist.
If your explanation is not convincing enough well you are not being responsible. (Though why any artist owes any of us rasikas explanations is beyond me).
If you over-sing in December you are not being responsible either.
If TMK is indeed attention-seeking, Behag, you're taking the bait no.

Re: Chennai (December) Music Season 2010-2011 Schedule
Observing TMK over the last 6 or 7 years , he usually gives about 10 to 12 concerts from dec 15th to 31st, then goes for a big break from Jan 1 to 7th and finally winds up in kalArasana or Mudhra with a 4 hr concert. Now he is passing the remaining 6 to 8 concerts in the year 2010 is surely a sign of he not feeling insecure , hats off to him . Having said only he can do that as his slots are secure from 2011 onwards. I wish very senior musicians also take a leaf out of TMK.

Re: Chennai (December) Music Season 2010-2011 Schedule
This thread is about the 2010 Season schedule, and already it has become focussed on one artist!
I have posted on another thread that Chennai-resident performers have all year to listen to other artists: in December their place is on stage.
But let us shift the focus from he-who-is-not-performing to the hundreds that will be?

And I was saying if he withdrew quietly, then there would a lot of rumour and innuendo! A lot of fans sure will be disappointed so there is nothing wrong with that statement. I wouldn't call it grand.behag wrote: You misunderstand, yes of course the clarification is necessary because he has grandly announced he is singing no kutcheris this December. I think there is a communication error here. Behag isn't talking about his actual statement on his website but rather the scale of his action. If he wants to reduce the load, attend concerts, learn ect. ect. then he can reduce the number of concerts he gives from 15 to 4-5. Instead he has decided to give "zero" concerts which is rather a 'sensational' move.mohan wrote: And I was saying if he withdrew quietly, then there would a lot of rumour and innuendo! But why are we all surprised that tm krishna is doing this???
One thing is for sure, TM Krishna really knows how to get his name out there to make sure his "brand" gets plenty of advertisement! He plays that game very well

Re: Chennai (December) Music Season 2010-2011 Schedule
It is a common complaint from season concert goers that their favourite artists give so many concerts that they are far from fresh. A reduction to a smaller number would seem to make more sense than a reduction to zero.
Well, maybe, but remember that a great number of rasikas are never going to be aware of that statement on his site --- although, I suppose news spreads. One thing is for sure, TM Krishna really knows how to get his name out there to make sure his "brand" gets plenty of advertisement! Re: Chennai (December) Music Season 2010-2011 Schedule
The no. of concerts is zero in December and four in January -- which is still technically part of the margazhi season. Even though in many minds the "season" is reckoned over with the Music Academy sadas, well he is performing there on Jan-1. To that extent his statement that "This December I will not be performing" is a bit of an “ashwathhama hathah .. kunjarahaâ€...Rasika911 wrote: I think there is a communication error here. Well, Krishna in mahAbhArata asked Yudhistra to utter "aswattAma hathaha ....kunjaraha" and drowned out the kunjaraha part. Didn't he? The modern (TM)Krishna can also do similar things. The season ends when he says it does. It is not a bait. It is the truth. Don't you dare question it
