In this DVD Dr. Balamuralikrishna is using notation/sahithyam when rendering his own composition!! I feel as a rasika that many of the pieces lack polish when rendered. Very dissapointing to see this. Also sets a bad example for young students and performers when a composer is looking at notation when singing his own composition.

Instead of doing this I think senior artists should follow what people like semmangudi and nedunuri krishnamoorthy have done and set-up krithis of composers such as annamacharya, swathi-tirunal ect. Semmangudi has rendered swathi tirunal krithis with incredible polish while accompanied by his disciples and due to his efforts many of these pieces are in circulation now.
I won't advice anyone to buy this.

Fortunately, some of us don't Need your advice to decide whether to buy it or not. There is no comparison between a singer and a composer. I doubt whether Thyagaraja, Dikshitar, Shyama Shastri or any of the great composers would remember all their own compositions by heart. It is commendable that an 80 year old man like Balamurali sings as clearly and beautifully as he does.
I bought the DVD two weeks ago and still haven't stopped listening to it. They have helpfully given a booklet too, with the lyrics and notation for each of the varnams, which is wonderful for music students, musicians and dancers alike. The DVD would have been totally worth the money even if it had just one of the five varnams, as each one is a masterpiece.
Instead of advising anyone to buy it or not, I can only say that I am extremely glad that I Did buy it. I hope they will bring out many more such high quality products in the market, for those of us who are more concerned with good music and poetry than with pieces of paper.
