Narasimha maam paahi of Thyagaraj is in Raga Phalamanjari. I am not aware of Balaranjani. Any way I will listen to Volletti sir's song and reconfirm. If you want the details of Phalamanjari please let me know.

Phalamanjari is a vakra sampoorna janya of 22nd mela Karaharapriya. Its scale runs as SGMDS - SNDPMGMRS. Note that arohana has only 4 swaras. G in arohana is elongated in presentation. Its a minor raga with a very limited scope for elaboration. Sanatanaparamapavana is yet another popular kriti of Thyagaraja in this raga. Another one by Patnam Subrahmanya Iyer is Palukudache.

It seems phalamanjari is also known as balamanjari.
And there's another ragam called phalaranjani - also a janya of Kh.priya, and with vakra swaras in both aro and avaro.

Ya. Phalaranjani is also a janya of Kharaharapriya with the following scale:
SGMPMDS-SNDPMGMRS -a vakra audava vakra sampoorna raga, while phalamanjarimis a chtuswari vakra sampoorns.
I feel Phalamanjari is being pronounced as Balamanjari by some Tamilians who don't have the 4 letters (P,PH,B,BH). No offence meant :)

Sri narasimha is apparently a composition in phalaranjani only.
I m told that some vidwans from the Tillaistanam lineage do sing it in the original phalaranjani tune.

Actually strangely "pa" (and ka) is what would/should have been natural to Tamilians at the start of the word :) - all words which begin with "ba" would be imports. But we have been hopelessly confused by the infusion of so many Sanskrit words into a language whose script is plain incapable of representing them :) !. So we have people saying ba when pa/pha/bha, pa when ba/bha/pha and what not !

The kulka of kulkarni follows natural Tamil phonetic rules ( think kalkaNDu ;-) ) and so shouldnt have been mangled. But .....

I came across couple of phalaranjani versions at sangeethapriya:
http://sangeethamshare.org/sunil/thyaga ... o/krithis/
SrI-nArasimha--phalaranjani--Adi--G-S-Mani.mp3
http://sangeethamshare.org/sunil/thyaga ... o/krithis/
SrI-nArasimha--phalaranjani--Adi--BMK.mp3

The ragam sounds a bit like kAnada.

they call it pUlamanjari, to compound the confusion, and the Andhra school sings it as phalaranjani, if memory serves me right.

Annamacharya has used phalamanjari, and the northern scheme of music has a paTmanjari

Dear MangudimmA, isn't the very name of this thread an endorsement of your fear; phalam has transmuted to balam. Fruits of labour, eh!

I noticed that it's pronounced as 'nArasimha', not 'narasimha'. How come?

There are many such constructs in sanskrit where a compound word can take one of many alternate forms.

the adjectival form of paramArtha can be either of paramArthika or pAramArthika.

Similarly, nara-simha combo can give narasimha or nArasimha - vide ViSNU-sahasranAma stOtram - nArasimha-vapuH shrImAn.
