Sancharis

Post by preyas »

I have recently started understanding the meaning of varnam words and enjoying them. While I have been watching a few I have found that sancharis seem to be employed in them to tell a great story.

I have noticed the following sancharis for the various Gods. I am not sure whether there are others which are employed and if so what type of stories. The idea is if I realize what various sancharis could be for certain Gods then I would be able to enjoy them easier or identify them as they are being depicted. So a few I have seen I have noted below

Muruga
1. Birth
2. Advising Shiva of Om
3. Fight with Demon
4. Valli wedding

Vishnu
1. Elephant Moksha

Krishna
1. Draupadi Saree

Shakthi
1. Full Moon story
2. Mahishasura Fight

Siva
1. Kanapanaiyanar
2. Markandia
3. Drinking the Snake Venom

I am not sure of the two questions - Are there other Gods depicted in Varnams which are popular and what other Sancharis are there. I hope the experienced people in the group can add to my understanding.

Hi Preyas

Sancharis are not decided based on Gods the varnams are dedicated to. The sanchari described depends on the lyrics of the song. So if the song goes, "you are kind to your devotees" AND if the song is on Krishna, THEN draupadi vastraharanam, sudhama episod or any story of wherever he helped anyone and thus implies his kindness is depicted. There are 1000,000 stories and you can cross reference them with multiple moods that u interpret them to be.Like if the same line was in a song devoted to Vishnu, u can show, gajendra moksham, mohini avataram, the 10 dashavatarams or ANY other episode where he reciprocated to a bhaktas pleas.

Some people choose random sancharis for random lines in the song. There was one arangetram i went to where there was some line on krishna being mischeivous and the girl burst into a sanchari on narasimha avatara. Just how narasimha translates into mischeifs for krishna, beats me. And the guru is running a dance school for the past 30 years!

SO, sancharis are (ideally) chosen based on the interpretation of the poets work by the dancer.

So, its a bad idea to list sancharis per God. There can be as many sancharis as there are stories in Indian Mythology. You better start reading amar chitra katha or something heavier to know of stories of each God. And then once u read/hear the lyrics of a varnam, u can start guessing what sanchari a dancer will choose to portray for a particular meaning of the line. Thats more fun :)

the ones u listed are majore episodes of every GOd. But that list will never be exhaustive no matter how many rasikas help you fill it.
