Good List.

Did not know that SP Ramh is also a vainika.
Are these ticketed concerts or free?
Will 30 min do justice to senior artists like E. Gaythri?
Interesting to see TNS in the list.
There is a small chance that I may be in Chennai during the period- Insha Allah!

All concerts are free. In order not to discriminate between senior and junior ( by the way, it is tricky to do this also) we have allotted uniformly 30 min.for each artist - thanks to the cooperation of all vainikas.Last year also, we followed the same format and it was successful.
For your information, Ramh is an excellent Vainika and there is a special depth and approach in his play.
So, all of you are once again welcome!

Alas, I could not make it to Chennai for the weekend. (But I attended a brilliant special RTP concert of OST at BTM Cultural Academy in Bangalore. RTP was in Keeravani)

Can someone write about the Veenotsavam. It is really becoming rare to listen to good veena performances. One of my friends even joked " VeeNa en veena concert poreL"- Why waste time by going to Veena concert :)

I was there between three and seven yesterday.Great effort by Mudra. In hind sight , 30 minutes looks too short.Even assuming it is a nonstop- covering many artists- format.
60 minutes would have been ideal.
Liked the playing of GRS Murthy immensely..Vasanth Kumar was out of sorts .Ananthanarayan looked very competent.Jayalaxmi Sekhar was impeccable with her Kotinadulu ? in Todi and a brilliant Hamir Kalyani Thillana. JJ Played a lilting thanam in Miya Malhar - after spotting me in the audience - and a Fine duet.
I had expected a bigger crowd . But this was a stable set.not many moving in and out.
There was quite a bonhomie among various artists and accompanists . Guys on bikes with their Cricket gear , rushing to the play field looked very much similar to the Veena artists with their Gear.
I had company of my friend Pitchai Adilingam ( Grandson of TNR and son In law of Karaikurhci ) .
He was not impressed by the electronic veena concept . I narrate it here to give the Radel makers , an old timers perspective.
The slight change in tone between J and J's Veena was bothering him . He preferred Jeyraj to switch over to the kind Jeyasree uses and have a perfect match. So much for the feedback for JJ.
Mudra pampered me with free coffee and Mixture. I tried to give something back by buying 4 volumes of the collected editions of Samudra magazine , from a cute boy , holding fort at the counter. He had offered me that free mixture earlier in the afternoon.
He looks well set to take the work of Mudhra forward .

I would have imagined that a difference in tone between 2 veenas emphasises the duet concept. You can have 2 different views on this - one : where there is no difference in the tone of one instrument and the other, and two: where the contrasting tone helps in emphasising the play of one against the other. For example, the difference in voice quality between Nazakat and Salamat Ali, only enhanced their duets (till today, according to me, unparalleled in vocal or instrumental music).
Anyway, thank you for the feedback!

Radhika,
Just as we rasikAs are entitled to our own personal tastes, vidvAns/vidUshis and their families are too! It's the same when my favorite rAgam is something some folks may not want to listen to at all!
J&J's playing together, tuning up their vINAs the way they does have a pleasing effect on me. Had I not heard them but had heard only the mention about this, I might have imagined the sound to be discordant too, perhaps.
The mention of 'mixture' reminds me of Bharath (it was him, I think) who went to one of the earlier RasikAs meet, found just another member at the meeting place and they sat down sharing the mixture he had brought and chatted!

Radha,
Is your son learning music? A superfluous question, perhaps!

Well, my son is learning the violin and kanjira. I will give a prize to anyone who can guess why we put him in these two instruments!
With regard to the audience for the Veenotsav, I want to share one thing. Though TNS sir played on 28th, he came on 29th afternoon with his son by 2p.m and stayed till 4.30p.m and heard all the young veena artists play. It must have been truly inspirational ( perspirational!) to see such a doyen in the audience. Now, if such a great and busy artist like him could make time to come and sit through, I think other artists have no excuse to give! Also unlike other artists who make such a show during their entry and exit as audience, TNS just came in and left silently - something for all of us to emulate!

In the Indiranagar, Bangalore series TNS had his concert the first day and the next day was Sanjay's. TNS just walked in for Sanjay's concert and stayed on till the end of the RTP and left quietly. Sanjay, of course respectfully greeted him during his entry and exit. I have heard TNS say that to be a good artist you should first of all be a good rasika.

kssr,
Wasn't that when Sanjay was singing tODi (tODiyil pADuginREn-- the song TNS sang in his film?)! The RTP was in paTdIp.
It always makes me very happy to see performers attending the concerts of others.Yes, if I remember right, the entry and exit of TNS were without any fuss. Sanjay graciously acknowledged his arrival but sang on without distracting himself or the audience.
