Bombay Jayashri at Shanmukananda - 5.9.2010
Vocal- Bombay Jayashri
Violin – Embar Kannan
Mridangam – Manoj Shiva
Ganjira - Anirudh Athreya
Concert took off sharp @ 6 pm and the hall was jam packed ! Probably, for Mumbai rasikas, this was much awaited as the vocalist is from their own soil !
Mayatita Swaroopini ( Maya malava gowlai ) was a very good Starter
Sangeetha Gyanamu ( Dhanyasi ) followed . Then it was Sri Venkatagirisama . The next one was a mesmerizing Maaravairi ramani !
An extensive alapana and neraval on Shankarabaranam was followed by Swara raga sudha. The Swarajathi and neraval were elaborate.
RTP was on Shanmugapriya ! What a coincidence ! TNK had just played it the previous evening @ Chembur Fine Arts !
The main kriti was Muruga Unnai Maravaa . The Thani was so absorbing that very few went out for a commercial break ! Kudos to Manoj Shiva and the young bull Anirudh Athreya.
A Krishna Bhajan , Aalo Hare Krishna was brief but nice. Then came the audience's delight Muruganin Maru peyar azagu
The concert ended on a happy note @ around 9.15 pm with BJ singing her Guru LGJ’s Yamuna Kalyani Thillana
Embar Kannan showed once again that he is one of the leading Pro . Class apart . Embar complemented BJ well especially during those breathtaking kalpanaswara exchanges in Shamugapriya . The concert reached its peak at the pallavi stage of Muruga unnai marava with the entire team giving their best.
Jayashri , in her introduction speech, heartily thanked her Gurus for having groomed her to this level .
Out of over enthusiasm, I zoomed it too much that the video gave a blurred output. However the audio is of decent quality I believe.
A terrific concert .

She is definitely the best even among the three most popular female singers today (IMO). Were you not shown the door or at least reprimanded for the video

Haha ok. I was thinking AS(I'm assuming that is Aruna Sairam?) and Sudha Ragunathan.
But I do agree, I think Jayashri's music is just scintillating! It's sad that she doesn't visit Bangalore very often. I love attending her concerts when she does.

Listening to the Shanmukhapriya aalaapanai now. It's lovely. Embar Kannan is excellent too.

Yes Lakshman sir, that is the RTP.
Also, could anyone tell me which the third raagam (in the raagamalika swarams during the RTP) is? She seems to even sing the aarohanam and avarohanam in its entirety when she begins. But I'm unable to place it.

Lovely list. I am sure Smt. Jaishree's msuic was very contemplative and satisfying.
Mumbai should be very proud of the fact that many of the popular performing artists are/came from their city - The eponymous SK designates, Bombay Sisters, Smt. Jayshree, Smt. Aruna Sairam, and Smts. Ranjani and Gayatri. I am sure there are others as well....

Should be mAyAtIta svarUpiNi - meaning one whose form (svarUpiNi) is beyond (atIta) illusion (mAyA).S.Balaji wrote:Mayatheertha Swaroopini ( Maya malava gowlai )
Should be mAravairi ramaNiS.Balaji wrote: Maaravari ramani !

May be its her home ground & thats why she didnt object to video recording
Jokes apart, as we all know, most of the times, Jayashri Madam is so focussed that she does a medidated type of singing with eyes closed always & hence there is no chance of observing whether there are guys like me doing a recording
She was really obliging and infact many took photos and videos from Mobiles that evening . Shortly, I will be uploading some images.
Heartening to see the mega hall fully occupied atleast 30 minutes before the start ! It reflects that there are still carnatic music lovers who have selective preferences and they may come for a star singer only |(
The Shanmugapriya RTP was awesome . The team was charged up for the moment . Though Manoj Shiva was a last minute replacement, he did complement extremely well. Cheers.
I think Embar Kannan has become a force to reckon with having accompanied for Sudha Raghunathan regularly and oflate for Jayashri also. I believe, he is travelling to US shortly along with his Guru Kanyakumari Mdm.
We could see many children turning up for the concert. This is what Shri Madurai G.S.M. used to advise regularly.
In recent times, Mumbai had witnessed many star performers like Sudha Raghunathan , Nedunuri ( @ Worli Nehru centre - Banyan organised )
TNS @ Chembur fine arts. Lalgudi siblings @ Worli
and now TNK & BJ .
Ofcourse, we Aamchi Mumbaikars are proud that many eminent singers have come from our soil !

It is so nice to hear that. Today there are artists whose main job is to chase around recorders. Music comes a distant second![]()

BJ is without doubt a star singer. The other reason for packed halls is that they make themselves very rare. People wait for a long long time to get a chance to listen to a live concert (true with all the 3 lady stars). You know why there is so much crowd at Tirumala temple? You have to wait in the queue for hours for getting a darshan of a few seconds. Then you want to go againClever are these artsists and this GOD, too!

Artistes--maybe. God--certainly not.
God is not clever. Actually he is an innocent bystander. It is the middlemen who make it so glamorous by making the visit a desirable event and by placing the diamond diadem on the Lord. Did he ask for it?
