*During MSS memorial award presented to SKA Chigelput Ranganathan this evening it was mentioned by atleast two persons (one from the organisers 'side& the other from the rasikas and also from the official photographer Rajagopal (brother of Madrimangalam Swaminathan) that the previous day concert of SKN R. Vedavalli centered around MD compositions and was a feast . Any write up on this please?

I did not attend the concert, but I was informed that the main piece was SankarACAryam. The grand yadukulakAmbhOji of Subbarama Dikshitar, 'pArthasArathini' was sung, as was tyAgarAjENa samrakshitOham in sALagabhairavi. Perhaps our forum member Smt. Sivapriya [the source of this informaiton] or Nick H, both of whom were at the concert, could provide more details.

12.09.2010 :
5.30 p.m.
Presentation of MS Memorial Annual Award to Chengalpattu Shri . Ranganathan
Guests of Honour: Smt. R.Vedavalli, Shri P.S.Narayanaswamy, Shri Narasimhan (Asthika Samajam), Shri T.M.Krishna

*****
The sheer guru bhakti and dedication, besides the unassuming nature of Vidwan Chengalpattu Shri. Ranganathan stood foremost in the felicitation addresses of the guests. PSN's narration of the 'cycle savari-s' undertaken by him and friends with CR for music destinations etc. took the audience to old Madras. CR's grip over laya and his ability to meet any musical challenges made interesting stories. Perhaps CR was the only person who had the longest tutelage under Alathur Sri Venkatesa Iyer and later from the famed brothers. RV and Sri Narasimhan also came up with their experience with the stalwart. TMK explained how he has been immensely benefited by CR's guidance.

Everyone appreciated the organisers of the Trust for honouring CR.

In his reply address, CR turned equally nostalgic. He had a special word of appreciation to TMK whom he described as the 'Singakutty' of today's Carnatic music! He also remembered the efforts of doyens like Prof.Sambamoorthy for in-depth studies in carnatic music.

Audience turnout for the above function was less due to rains.

6.45 - 9.00 p.m.
Concert by Shri Ravikiran (Chitraveena), Akkarai Subhalakshmi (Violin), Neyveli Narayanan (Mridangam). S.Karthick (Ghatam), B S Purushotaman (Kanjira) Bhargavi Balasubramanian (Chitraveena Support)

1.Surati -Varnam
2. Margahindolam: Chalamelara - Tyagaraja
3.Kalyani- Geeta rasike (Kriti on oddess Saraswati) - Oothukadu Venkatasubbaiyer
4.Maanchi- Brovavamma- Syama Sastri
5.Saveri RTP (ragamalika tanam in Nilambari, Ananda Bhairavi,Andolika,Poorvikalyani)
: Pallavi in AadiTalam - 2 kalai ; eduppu in samam
6. Sahana -iniyenna pechu (Javali) - Subbarama Iyer
7. Kalyanavasantam- Tillana (Own Comp) followed by Mangalam

Rasika-s turned out in good numbers for the concert as luckily the rains stopped by 6 p.m.

Ravikiran demonstrated the uniqueness of the naada prapancha created by the multi-stringed Gotuvadyam (renamed Chitraveena) tuned to an incredible '5 1/2 kattai' pitch which is sheer joy to listen.

Chalamelara (Margahindolam) is practically a vintage stuff (not often heard in concerts these days) and Ravikiran added a bonus with a few rounds of scholarly kalpana swaras. (The risk with Margahindolam is that an average performer is likely to bring in traces of Saramati in it!)

The Kalyani aalaapana was brief and the Oothukadu kriti (with typical Madhyamakaala phrases in the Pallavi) was good.

Saveri was wholesome with a 'rasika friendly' pallavi. Ravikiran shone when he wove the trikaala rendering into the niraval segemnt. Swara prastaara was equally imaginative'

Akkarai Subbulakshmi on the violin reciprocated quite well. Acoustic hiccups rendered Smt. Bhargavi Balasubramanian's (Chitraveena support) inaudible; still she followed the main artist closely.

The percussionists presented an attractive Tani with the concluding Mohra oriented in Tisra mode (Courtesy Shri UKS) with an impressive Mutthaayppu..

A sober Sahana and brilliant Kalyanavasantam formed appropriate concluding items.

A good concert.

Concert list :

Siddhivinayakam Anisam - Chamaram - swara at Prasiddha Gananayakam
Pavanaathmajaagachha - Chalanata
Parthasarathini - Yadukulakamboji - R, S
Tyagarajena Samrakshitoham - Salagabhairavi
Sankaraacharyam - Sankarabharanam - R,N,S
GuruguhaMurte - Udayaravichandrika - R
Virutham - slokam on Muthuswamy Dikshitar
Abhayaamba - Sri - MANIPRAVAALA kriti

I was ecstatic listening to this stellar concert of my Guru, which had the grandeur of a majestic elephant and the spirit and power of a sprinting lion.

I was resisting writing about this concert, because of being 'wanting' for words that could describe the experience. Now that some have requested and I have also settled for a few days, I took the keyboard on hand.

Everytime I hear her sing Yadukulakamboji, I always wonder as to how she could spin myriad phrases without repetition and without even once treading upon allied ragas ! This time's alapana beat it all!

With heavy weight masterpieces of Dikshitars, generally the average opinion would be that the concert would be heavy and of a slow tempo. She proved that weight can create wonders, if only one had worked on it . Only through sheer sadhana can such effortlessness manifest in ones singing.

M A Krishnaswamy was at his best , with some very good rounds of neraval and alapana. ArunPrakash , knows how best to follow RV along with her in soft tones and build the rhythmic background to suit her style of singing. He came alive in the Thani and proved his mettle. V. Sumitra provided excellent support , with some stupendous raga alapana in Sankarabharanam.

One of the most amazing things was how fast the time went. I was thinking, at one point, how balanced and smooth her presentation is. It is like the best cooking, with just the right amount of flavour and seasoning.

I will stop there. I can't ever hope to write anything that compares with
the grandeur of a majestic elephant and the spirit and power of a sprinting lion.

Yes, it was a good concert by Ravi kiran. What stood out was the Kalyani alaapana. I did not think it was brief but was really good. No frills, no jumps and leaps. It was very subtle and with fine gamakas.I would rank it even better than the saveri alapana. very memorable. He played brovavamma with soothing finesse.

There is a snippet of the kalyANi AlApanA floating around on Facebook. It is soothing and extremely beautiful.
