Thanks for the details. Is it possible to webcast this event?ramanathan wrote:Updated details above. All are welcome!
If unedited versions are made available in some form for a fee later, that will be best.

The process by which generations of listeners have been spoilt in Chennai .
Just cant understand what makes artists stand in a beeline to sing for such chennaites - Who will spend 35 K on a flat TV but not even ...... to get into a concert hall.

They will spend, when Piano, Drums, Thavil create noise pollution with an artiste accompanying them by sceaming hoarse about the cows, snakes and the monkeys, when an artiste fools people in the name of harikathA, sangeetha upanyAsams, normal concert, ending up doing nothing finally; and when such programmes get dramatised and advertised as once in a lifetime performancemankuthimma wrote: - Who will spend 35 K on a flat TV but not even ...... to get into a concert hall.

Kindly do not be too bitter about the free concert idea. Your point of view is well understood. However, the vast spread of CM (in quantity if not quality) over the years is surely due to the concept of free access to good material, at least in the initial stages. CM has also got a fillip today due to modern technology- the internet, mp3, transferabilty of large files, youtube, skype and so on. Let us not complain about things which cause development of the art. If artists who may feel aggrieved and organisers who have to find money feel OK with conducting free concerts, why should we rasikas, shed crocodile tears? All free concert organisers will definitely have a window for rasikas to make donations. We can contribute, if we feel like. Let people who wish to take a free ride enjoy it. Why should we crib about it?

Have you heard this before ....
That Scot could have been a ChennaiteIt was the final session in the training for the new recruits to the NY Police Dept.
The large sergeant picked up a skinny lad and called out to him .
Now Tell me , what are the tactics you will use to disperse a large but angry crowd .
The Scot thought for a while and answered :
I dont know hoiw you guys do it around here in New York.
But back home in Aberdeen , We just pass the hat around for donations . And the crowds melt , in no time.

It is difficult to understand human psychology.
We always want to talk about what the other party should do. From a rasikas point of view, if you do not want to pay, it is free. If you want to pay, you can donate. Why should a rasikas insist on what an organiser should do- have tickets or no tickets ?
Same is the problem when an artist instead of singing, keeps passing comments about what the audience should do or what the organiser should or should not do.
Rasikas can make "suggestions" IMO only when he is affected- no/bad toilets, no facility for the elderly or disabled, intolerable sound system, etc., Even in such situations, the best solution is for us to walk out gracefully. It is always the "market forces" that are most effective. If you do not like one shop move on to another which you like.

Can someone who had been to the Pallavi darbar let us know how it went. "On the spot pallavi", IMO is pushing it too far and will definitely bring down the quality of the performance/performer. It is customary for the vocalist to inform the accompanying artists in advance what pallavi he is going to sing, especially in case of complex thaalam. Why is this urge now to take it to the limit and make artists fumble or give up and produce lower level music than what they can actually achieve?

I was told by some Laya Enthusiast friends that Abhishek Raghurams effort was mind boggling .
I dont know much about these things but I believe he did take an adventurous route by asking the audience to name the ragas and some others to fix the thalas and came up with a breathtaking effort.
kssr- this is just to fill in until the reports start trickling.

He may have planted people in the audience to name his previously fixed and practised raga and tala and made it seem spontaneous.

Was this a concert or a conjuring show? That is a very bad accusation. He may have planted people in the audience
I am the least knowledgeable in history here, but surely the trend is the opposite, and that main artists taking the trouble to inform accompanists of content, even complex palavis, is the more recent?kssr wrote:Can someone who had been to the Pallavi darbar let us know how it went. One hears some stories about these aspects, but I can't tell whether they represent the typical or not. Even with decades of concert-going experience, only the artists really know what went on, although hearsay may trickle down.
Hasn't the on-the-spot pallavi been part of past legends too?
I have note been attending. I have doubts that I have the ability, as yet, to take in such a performance. Mind you, of course there is only one way to find out

On the spot pallavis are indeed challenging for the artiste and interesting for the audience. It adds another element of spontaniety and manodharma to a pallavi. the RTP is supposed to be a improvised exploration of a raga and by making pallavi on-the-spot takes the improvisation to another level

I attended Abhishek Raghuram's program although walked in a little late. He sang a pallavi in Shanmukhapriya, tisra triputa talam khanda nadai. It was an awesome presentation filled with powerful and nuanced vocal gymnastics. Akkarai on the violin and Anand on the mridangam provided great accompaniment. The hall was surprisingly full until quite late for a weekday. Many artistes were seen in the audience.
