Re: Vidwan TV Vasan passes away?
yes bharath... very sad... i am going to miss aNNA terribly. May his soul rest in peace.
It seems he had gone to Delhi for official work and had a heart attack.
from scott's site: Younger brother of singer and mridangam master T. V. Gopalakrishnan. T. V. Vasan was trained in mridangam, pakhawaj, maddalam, thavil, kanjira, and ghatam and also teaches vocalists. He learned from his brother and has been an All India Radio A grade artist for 28 years. As a ghatam artist he was part of the legendary group Sruthi Laya with Karaikudi R. Mani on mridangam, G. Harishankar on kanjira, T. V. Vasan on ghatam, and Srirangam S. Kannan on morsing. Equally skilled on mridangam, he was constantly performing several concerts a day in the 2005-2006 season. Vasan prefers the Madras ghatam.

modest and musical on stage, always ready with a smile offstage.
I don't know his age, I expect it will be published as we get more news and tributes, but I am sure that none of us ever thought of him as being old, which makes this all the more shocking.
I only once saw him play mridangam for TVG. I wondered if there was ever such sympathy and understanding between performers. Now we will never see that again.
Very very sad.

This is shocking and terrible!
I shall forever cherish the concerts of his I've attended. Especially one in which he accompanied TMK-RKSK on mridangam, with Aniruddh Athreya on kanjeera.

It is a very sad news. I have been listening to his percussion 'Ghatam' since childhood. Whenever there was a concert in Aakaashvani (AIR) I used to hear his name along with legends like, Mavelikkara Krishnankutty, Karikudi Mani, Umayalpuram Shivraman, Guruvaayoor Dorai etc. etc. May his soul rest in the eternal peace.

Very sorry to hear the sad news. Condolences to the bereaved family. His participation during Guruseva 70 by TVG was memorable. He conducted the show with angavasthiram tied around his waist in a typical way.

I could not write or do any thing when I heard about his demise this morning. The greatest shock of my life!Last week only he came to console me at my residence & blessed me for a long life putting vibhoothi on my forehead. He had firmly told me that we should play together for TNS sir in the forth coming season....Actually I have to write a lot of things about him which I will do when I become completely normal.I have all respect for his age and talent. I am nothing if he starts playing Mridangam. Geetha Manni is my wife's neibhour in pazhayannur. His daughter Vibha & son Girish are two gems.I don't know how they will recover from this shock. My heart felt condolences to his family.May his soul rest in peace.I will not be able even to go to his residence due to my health problems at present.Hope they will excuse me for the same.

Sad news, indeed. Every season, I looked forward to listening to him whenever I saw his name in a concert announcement. Even to the likes of us who are not strong in the layA department, his playing made a concert special, livelier. His accompaniment made an impact in any concert. A ghatam could 'speak' volumes in his hands. He added to his gifts, his smiling presence.
Never thought the end would come so soon to a consummate artiste who looked healthy too. What a loss!
My thoughts are with his family, friends and his students.

A great artist, a good human being with always a smiling face. Every time I had seen him in the concerts in the company of my anna, he always had a nice word for me, a word of encouragement for my ( amatuerish ) violin playing and some well informed discussions on a subject, hot for that day. Always vibrant in his accompaniment, he was a constant company to my anna in his days in AIR. My heart weeps at his demise and my sincere condolences to his bereaved family. God bless his soul.

Re: Vidwan TV Vasan passes away :(
My humble condolences.
From The Hindu, today :
Renowned Ghatam exponent T.V. Vasan passed away in New Delhi on Wednesday, following a cardiac arrest. He was 61.
He had gone to New Delhi to be part of a jury to audition artistes for performance in the All India Radio.
Born into a family of musicians as one among nine children, Mr. Vasan grew up in an atmosphere of melody and rhythm.
Along with his eldest brother, renowned musician T.V. Gopalakrishnan (TVG) and older brother noted violinist T.V. Ramani, Mr. Vasan made a mark in the field of Carnatic music through his sensitive accompaniment. He could play for artistes of different styles.
Recalling his brother's performances, Mr. Gopalakrishnan said, “He has played for many doyens of those years and all leading contemporary musicians. M.S. and D.K.P. were very fond of him and his playing,†he said.
Mr. Vasan, who learnt from his brother TVG and later from Prof. Velukutty Nair in Kerala, was a versatile artiste who has served the AIR for nearly three decades. “He could play the Thavil with great ease. He was also a good vocalist. He retired from service just a year ago. I am about 20 years older than him and have seen him grown up. The loss is irreparable,†Mr. Gopalakrishnan said.
Artistes recalled Mr. Vasan's expertise in recording and sound engineering. “Many artistes would insist that he be present for their recording for the AIR,†said Mridangam exponent Karaikudi Mani.
“We have collaborated for several of my ‘Sruthilaya' ensembles. He was keen on learning new things and was a passionate artiste,†he added.
A very caring and loving person, Mr. Vasan could not see anyone suffer. “He would go out of his way to help artistes and friends. He was a remarkable human being. It is indeed a great loss,†Mr. Mani said.
Mr. Vasan is survived by his wife, son and daughter.

My heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family. My last concert of TV Vasan was in the Dec '09 season when he accompanied TNS along with Vellore Ramabhadran. What a memorable concert that was.
That would make TVG about 81 years. He definitely does not look 81. I saw him this year at the YACM trio violin concert accompanying the young artistes.shyama-priya wrote:My humble condolences.

Sad to hear this news. Ever smiling. Always with Vibhooth, a divine look, in the stage appreciating the accompanying artists whole-heartedly. Last year I saw him with Sri TNS and another one with Malladi Brothers. Reall sad. May God his family enough strength to recover from this shock..

In his demise We miss a talented,.consistent &popular artist sporting a cheerful face with an inner calm.
I was privileged to be a member in the Pancharatnam group(included me in the list by SKA Chigleput Ranganathan) to Kanchipuram atleast thrice a year organised by him.
For the past two years he was a source of strength when I was organising Pancharatnam in youth hostel.
He politely declines the mementos/token offered after Thiagaraja Aradhana (rendering of PRKs)
One thing that pained me most was that (it looked) the children are yet to settle .

It was a great shock just now to know the sad demise of my close friend and a famous LAYAVADYAS' VIDWAN SHRI T.V.VASAN. His residence was only four houses apart from my house in Chennai Besant Nagar for the past several years. Recently,in 2010 also Shri T.V.Vasan enriched my TV National Progamme, alongwith his great brother Shri TVG and Shri M. Chandru. in which , I could never forget his cheerful and supportive face on the stage. Since i am away on a concert tour of USA and Canada, I take this medium to convey my heartfelt CONDOLENCES, to the members of his family, especially to his brother Shri T.V.G.

Dubai Music Lovers founded by Mridanga Vidwan Sri.D.Govindarajan paid rich tributes to Late Ghatam Meastro Sri.T.V.Vasan on his sudden , untimely demise. He expressed his profound sorrow and offered condolences to his brother Sri.TVG and also prayed that for his Soul to rest in peace. He recalled, in his passing away, Carnatic Music has lost an artist, difficult to be replaced.
The concert held on 1st October 2010, by local artists towards Navarathri Eve celebrations with focus on Devi Krithis was dedicated in his memory.

Re: Vidwan TV Vasan passes away :(
A tribute function was held at Raga Sudha hall yesterday evening.
I can only say that grief and appreciation are not subject to the bounds of language, and report that a number of people spoke in his memory. TVG was quite overcome with grief.
Of course, I wondered why I should attend a function where I might understand but three words in an hour, but T V Vasan had smiles for everyone, including this foreign rasika of small significance, and, in the end, the question was how could I not go.
If all who have seen his smile and heard his music had been there, the hall would have been packed. There were not very many there, though several were eminent. I am glad that Jaya and Nada Imbam hosted this sad occasion.
Perhaps his final gift to me was contemplation of my own mortality: he was only three years older. A more sombre gift than the music, but possibly just as important.

Nick,
Glad to hear that you were there. His was a special smile, indeed. His playing was something I looked forward to in any conert in which he played.
Last season, when I remarked to someone how well Srivalsan Menon sang that morning after his concert, T.V. Vasan who was close by, joined in and said to me with his patent smile and his face glowing with pride: ivan engaNNA Sishyan. eppaDip pADaRAn (he is my brother's SishyA. See how he sings)!
Going to miss his presence and playing this season.
And your comment about moments like these anchors us, at least briefly to what our stay on earth is all about. Sobering thoughts for someone like me who is much older than you are...

Yes - makes you realize how fragile life is.
Apparently none of them (including Vasan sir himself!) had any inkling of what was lurking just round the corner!

Re: Vidwan TV Vasan passes away :(
Gayatri's journal (as it were) about the last few days of TV Vasan's life brings tears to our eyes. Her sensitivity as an artiste and her sentiments for a fellow musician who touched everyone not only with his art but with his smile and good nature is captured in her writing.

It does indeed. Thank you, Vishuramprasad, for the link.Gayatri's journal (as it were) about the last few days of TV Vasan's life brings tears to our eyes.
I can't tell why am I feel so affected by the death of someone I hardly really knew. But I do. Perhaps he was one of those people that made his audience feel that they knew him.

Brought tears to my eyes. Felt as if I was there in the conference room with Smt.Gayatri, listening to Shri Vasan.
