No, it is not a movie song. But, it is a great example of voice modulation while adhering to Sruti, laya etc...every time I hear 'nAlu puram nOkki nADi nAn', I have a crystal clear image of the nAyikA actually looking all around, and hesitating before approaching the stranger.....We discussed this here

Let's all celebrate 94th birthday of MS Amma..
Last year's birthday celebrations are still fresh in my mind, and also Smt Radha Vishwanathan's concert in Bangalore Gayana Samaja - wonderful purvikalyani and shankarabaranam, not to forget gana kuyil...
This year, Smt Radha is performing in Tirupathi, Nada Neerajanam program on Sep 16th at 6.15pm India time. Please do watch the program in SVBC live, or catchup webcast in the link

Cienu - thanks for sharing those links. Sri GKG has, in his inimitable way, paid a superb tribute to Smt. MSS - I found several parts of his speech incredibly moving. I could not agree more with the following quote that to me has an impact similar to her music....
Gopalakrishna Gandhi wrote:Subbulakshmi incandesced as she sang. Her singing voice employed more than the processes of phonation, more than the scope of the larynx.

The elevated eloquent felicitation - studded with metaphor, images and larger-than-life comparisons stems from the many-hued palette of MSS Ammal herself - her music, her self, her nature, her orientation, her dedication, none of which is separable.
Thanks for the link.

Re;Shyamapriya's query about lack of sishya Parampara--I think in the MS Amma thread myself and VKV have addressed this issue.Unlike other contemporaries like DKP,MLV MS Mami(due to T'S's influence) Mami had to perform duites as a hostess(on those days she did not have concerts) plus she herself was always learning--from Musiri mama,Semmangudi mama KVN,Brindamma and the last 25 years of her life -(when she was not active in the concert circuit) she was extremely busy with learning the Annamacharya kritis, the Paramacharya krithis--the hours of rehearsals involved for the Anamacharya( Krithis---the result every one would agree was worth every minute of the hardship!!).The sheer logistics of these rehearsals(Radha in Kilpauk),Kdayanallur venkatraman(Perambur) and Mami in Kotturpuram--ate up lots of time--they had barely time to learn the songs together that there was no time to teach anybody.
As I have written about the Kalkli Gardens days-hectic--with streams of visitors--announced and unanounced, there simply was no time to teach--Mami herself was ready and willing teacher whenever the occasion presented itself--when she visited Bombay she could teach my sister a couple of songs--Sreekanthimathim etc--but she simply did not have the time to teach and train disciples.
Other than that there was no overt or covert attempt to perpetuate an MS legacy!!!

Re: M.S. Subbulakshmi
The speech was eloquent and touching.
The world knew her--upto a point, and can't stop thinking as to how extraordinary she was.
She was much more than all that was known about her--her great music and her dedication to it and to her family and her friends, her immense devotion to the mahA periyavA. Yet, Sri Gandhi hovers around the mystery of her, trying to describe her. What he conveys very poetically is about that inner light which did shine in her, in this woman of contradictions--in her choosing (or given) a new life to live. She was a star who was recognized everywhere she went and yet was a simple home maker. Not all the words in the lexicon will come in handy to describe the inner qualities of this woman--a nAda yOgi who would get immersed in performing her duties too and find happiness in carrying out a housewife's responsibilities with a sense of beauty which was inherent in her. She added richness to the treasure of CM. She was one of the most charitable people we know!
May her love for music and for humanity inspire music lovers everywhere when we think of her and celebrate her!

Re: M.S. Subbulakshmi
Bharathiar's songs including Aaduvome Pallu Paduvome were sung by Sri Maduri Mani Iyer and Sri Semmangudi Mama singing together in 1927 congress party conference in Madras. May be it was not set to dance!
Talking of relationship between MMI and Semmangudi Mama with MS Amma , everyone knows that Mama was the guru and very close family associate of Amma . But nobody is aware that Madurai Mani and MSS were sharing the same household in their teens and were even competing with each other" who was able to keep the sruti for a longer time ". This fact was revealed by Amma herself to her grand daughter as I read in KALKI Magazine a few months back .

Very interesting Balummi, that must have happened in Madurai since both of them might have spent their childhood in that temple town.

I have personally discussed with BOTH MMI& MS about each other. In keeping with the norms of the times while it was obvious they were careful in choosing their words because of the usual fabricated stories etc it was obvious just from their facial expressions how sentimental they were in talking about each other& preferred to discuss only the music of the other. To ME both were GNANA YOGIS; Hence they could freely admire each others musical talents, abilities etc which are HIMALAYAN in stature & DID SO OPENLY......AS A RESULT I AUTOMATICALLY ADMIRE ANY ONE FROM MADURAI!.......VKV

Re: M.S. Subbulakshmi
YES,Rshankar--Cienu thanks for the post--the children pics in the background are my children --who both have two kids each--Look how radiant Radha is in that pic--the other part of the pic--the "duo" singing(myself/Mami) I am trying to post----some of these pics were slightly damaged(due to a flood and are being restored).
As a background to this --this was in 1977 when Mama,Mami and Radha came to the US on a fund-raising tour for the Hindu temple in Flushing NY and other causes in India and the US--Mind you, this was IMMEDIATELY after the Kalki Buildings were sold, the magazine had to be shut down albeit for a short period and they did not have time to move into another house in Chennai--they came straight to the US. CVN had arranged the whole concert tour--the day they arrived CNN had them put up at a mutual friend's house(who was a top executive in Air India @ that time)-- a modest house in Queens along with the acompaniments-Alagiriswamy and Guruvayur Dorai--Both Mami and Radha felt odd that having come to NY they were not being hosted in my house. besides as there were several members of the family in the host-- excellent hosts as no doubt they were. The parties concerned(nee Radha and my wife) were trying to figure out how the situation could be eased with the move to my house--the houses were 10 minutes apart so that there were no serious problems of transportation in the shifts/moves. But Mama strongly felt that he had to honor CVN's plans and not make any moves without CVN's approval(This was one great attribute of Mama-- total respect for the organiser's sentiments as well as the host's sentiments NOTWITHSTANDING his own comfort level with persons close to him. Like a fool not realising this deep-routed conviction of Mama I boldly "suggested" to Mama that atleast the three of them with Athma move to my house. I still have Mama's words ringing in my ears(after a couple of repeated exhortations to Mama to which he did not respond but clearly must have been annoyed at my mulish insensitivity--to the feelings of the hosts). he burst out to me --"YOU SHOULD KNOW BETTER--CVN HAS ARRANGED THIS TOUR-HE KNOWS WHAT IS BEST FOR US- I WILL AT THE APPROPRIATE MOMENT INITIATE THE MOVE-- AND THEN FINISHED OFF SAYING " NEED I SAY MORE HOW MUCH WE WOULD LOVE TO STAY WITH YOU AND NIRMALA.
Mama finished the conversation and the "move' was made the next day--those few days they stayed with us (in all the 50 plus years they had known my mother and father, they had not stayed a single day in matunga in our house!) were the greatest in our family's lives--it was like Rama and Sita moving from the Palace in Ayodhya to the palm-thatched hut in Chitrakuta!!
To show HOW Radha can be prescient and perceptive,in my casual conversation with her I had mentioned that my wife's birthday was around and to my wife I had often "bragged" about--legitimately though about Radha's superb Abhinayam(which was her forte in her younger dancing days). My wife duly followed this up with the request for Radha to demonstrate--Radha smilingly tut-tutted it.We thought nothing of this exchange. Then we had a regular get together the next day or so--to which some friends were invited-- Radha came out with saying she has a surprise birthday present for my wife and that she would dance Malai Pozhudinile if Mami would sing-- Mama had not sung that song in year --so was hesitant--I volunteered saying I would do the prompting(not as well as Radha would unobtrusively do in concerts!!--there are so may stories about Radha coming to Mami's rescue nonchalantly--for another day!).
That was the first time I ever sang BEFORE Mami-- let alone WITH her-unfortunately we did not record the song but the pic would look like a well-doctored "Mime". Radha ofcourse did not miss a single beat or expression and despite lack of practice was superb--my wife still cherishes that gesture as the best birthday present she has ever received.
Truly THIS PIC IS A VINDICATION OF THE ADAGE --A PIC IS WORTH A THOUSAND WORDS.
I think I had mentioned in one of my earlier posts on Mami about HOW Radha and Mama would by mere glances or facial gestures would communicate in Public--be it a song-prompt or a social occasion--withou anybody surrounding them noticing it--I would boldly venture to say that Radha understood her mother BETTER than even Mama--once when Mami lamented to her about something Mama said and how insensitive that was Radha did not flinch Instead she naughtily retorted in Tamil-roughly translated--If you knew this trait WHY did you marry him in the first place--Radha can defuse the most tense moments with a light-hearted humorous remark that would immediately lower the temps.
More on Radha later in this thread--
NOT ALL THE ARTICLES EVER PUBLISHED WORLDWIDE ON MAMA AND MAMI AND NOT ALL THE ENCOMIUMS/HONORS SHOWERED ON MAMA AND MAMI COULD EVER DO JUSTICE TO WHAT RADHA CONTRIBUTED TO THEIR LIVES RIGHT FROM CHILDHOOD TO THE DAY MAMI DIED.
At the Cleveland Aradhana in April--I had gone just to see Radha get the award--we were chatting in her room with Cienu doing an incredible job of looking after his Mom and entertaining visitors and well wishers.
Just when there were only two of us in the room, recalling every bit of nostalgia(we sang some of Mami's earlier Hindi light songs--Ek Sahara Thera, mai Nara Guniya etc etc) suddenly Radha came out with a remark " I wonder how my own singing career would have been had Mama(TS) seriously considered that thought and encouraged me--Semmangudi Mama complimented me for one Bhairavi Alapana I did in one of the concerts and declared that I am ready to sing solo"
My heart melted at that wistful thought so nicely expressed without any trace of disappointment--I have seldom met in my lifetime some one as positive as Radha despite her physical ailments that threaten to tame her passion unsuccessfully I might add!!

Reg the above by Balummi, I am surprised to know that MMI and SSI sang this together in 1927 itself- 20 years before our freedom. It shows that our people at that time had such positive thinking and were sure about our victory in the freedom strugle. But did the British Govt permit such songs in public?Bharathiar's songs including Aaduvome Pallu Paduvome were sung by Sri Maduri Mani Iyer and Sri Semmangudi Mama singing together in 1927 congress party conference in Madras. No.But did the British Govt permit such songs in public?
DKP told us how she once escaped from the rear of the stage , when the police came to arrest her for singing Bharathiars songs
I am not sure if those posts about our visit to her place still exist in the revamped rasikas.org . But she did tell us she was a very little girl . And someone in the Police ( Indians ) had tipped her guardians and she managed to escape.
Wish Video technology had appeared by then
My own Dad used to recollect the morning Prabhath pheris as a kid. He once went along , and Chaplin-style was locked up for a day.
His old Grand Mother ( he was orphaned early ) barging into the police station late in the night and getting him released .
And giving him a whack , at home

These artists were the real heroes& heroines. Actually Thyagabhoomi & other pictures were banned bt the British but T.S. & others with their ingenuity managed to screen such movies in Gaiety Talkies in Chennai! VKV

A nice attempt - a comment - IMO, Ms. Anita Ratnam's clip was not appropriate for the parts it was used for! Who was the first dancer (for nADi nAn)? That was a great match. You should add her name to the credits....

I always like constructive criticism which I consider to be better than apathy.
Well, I considered nearly 140 clips before using this one as I considered this one is nearer to
the lyrics at the place where it is used. Radha's pangs and that of kalki's damsel are considered similar. It took nearly a day and a half to select. The work involved in keeping the various clips
at the appropriate places of the song is time consuming.
I do not consider it as an 'attempt' . I consider it as an accomplished job.

btw, to dispel the apathy part, I have watched some of your youtube links and enjoyed them. I can imagine the amount of time, effort and passion this all takes in finding the clips, selecting them for aesthetic match and syncing them up with the lyrics. Good job.

Thank you for what you have stated.vasanthakokilam wrote:>I consider to be better than apathy.

However, there is a small misunderstanding as regards my use of the word ‘Apathy’.
To be frank as to what was in my mind is different.
I am rather unable to comprehend that many of the threads which I start are not developed further and the postings at the existing threads abruptly closed with out being further developed.
Having said that, I respect fully the rights of the members to respond or not to respond.
I am not unduly concerned as I consider that music and knowledge when not shared have no value and whatever I come across I would like to share in good faith.

venkatakailasam, it is good you are not taking it personally. And I do not think it is anything specific to you. Members' interests
vary and it is very hard to predict as to who or how they respond and develop the thread. For this post, I gathered some
statistics on the number of topics with just the original posters post. There are around 1000 of them. There are many members with multiple topics in that list. It may not be any consolation, but you are not alone
I know you do not need or expect the above validation, but your post raised the curiosity in me about this and I thought I will post the stats I found.

Venkatakailasam,
I appreciate the effort. Infact the early part of the birds chirping away was wonderful.!
And as rshankar had mentioned the expression of the first dancer was most appropriate.

Did I hear someone say that Ravi was found near a tavern in NJ ?
Oh ! Dearie . rshankar , the sweetest guy around here , . Always ready to pay a compliment.
No V Kailasam . It does not work that way in these parts .Great Masters never complete a piece of art work.
They just abandon it .
I Did not make this quote .up . Picasso did
You will never know how grateful people can get towards you . After a Decade I have invitations from every part of the globe - to spend atleast a day with them .At their cost . 8)
Every part of the globe excepting Latin America and the Arctic Zones

Cienu,
A wonderful picture of your mother!
Ramesh,
Thanks for your story which adds more to the unspoken thousand words. In spite of her physical challenges, her face is still very expressive--sporting many shades of a smile which can speak volumes!
Hope you can restore those pictures to share them with us.
Ravi,
You won't be in India on the 19th Dec to listen to Ramesh at Nageswaran's
Venkatakailasam,
As VK said, many posts go unanswered here merely because there are so many threads. It does not mean that people don't look at your posts. I have now caught on to seeing your name as yours and not that of VK's!

I know! My loss! I will have to experience it vicariously by reading the reports and, hopefully, by listening to the recordings...arasi wrote:Ravi,
