Ashwin Anand - veena recital, Chennai Sept 26, 2010

Post by vainika »

Bangalore-based vainika Sri Ashwin Anand gave a superlative mini-recital on Sunday, Sept 26 2010, at Chennai's Narada Gana Sabha. The concert was one of a series concluding the Veena Navarathri festival organized by the Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts and the Veena Foundation, New Delhi, in association with NGS and Sri SGBS Trust, Bangalore.

The items presented were (i) gaNanAyakam - pUrNaShaDjam (MD) (ii) dAkshAyanI abhayAmbikE - tODi - rUpaka (MD) and (iii) kElanO hari - suruTi (Purandaradasa). While all were rendered beautifully, the AlApanAs of tODi and suruTi were full of AhA moments, never once compromising aesthetics for virtuosity. His instrumental technique seemed to rely primarily on 'joined finger' as opposed to 'split finger' playing, even for sphurita-type gamakas. These lent a pleasing continuity and evenness to his tonal production, while retaining clarity and sharpness of phrasing. Sri Harish Kumar (mridangam) and Sri Shankar (ghatam) provided competent percussive support to his recital.

Ashwin's classicism and serious approach likely reflect both his own musical sensibilities and his training with the late Sangeetha Kalarathna Professor HV Krishnamurthy and Sangeetha Kalanidhi Smt. R. Vedavalli.

I hope rasikas get more opportunities to experience Ashwin's veena music in the future.

Aswin Anand : Veena recital steeped in classicism

Veena , the divine instrument, held by Goddess Saraswati, need not fear that it will become or is becoming extinct, as long as there are young artists like Aswin Anand playing that instrument, steeped in classical tradition. His concert was held at
Naada inbam on the 16 th of December 2009. Aswin was so confident with his instrument. Melody flowed, from every fret of the instrument.

Starting with Gananayakam and brisk swaras in Rudrapriya , he went on to a soulful Purvikalyani raga and Paripurna kama of Tyagaraja in Rupaka tala. China nadena in Kalanidhi was fast paced only to be followed by Kambodi The raga played by Aswin was out and out a gold standard Kambodi. Every bit was melodious and pure and this set a tone for Sri Subramanyaya Namaste, which was embellished and chiselled like a work of pure art.

He is currently under the tutelage of Sangita Kalanidhi Smt.R.Vedavalli and has imbibed her musical values into every bit of his Veena, in all aspects of alapana, kriti rendition and kalpana sangitam.

Charulatha Ramanujam another artist from Bangalore , on the violin reflected the same standards set by Aswin and was very supportive. Kalladiakuruchi Sivakumar was on the mridangam. His playing was smooth with apt gumkis and chaps at relevant places and flowed with the Veena.
This is what I had written about Ashwin in my chennaidecemberseason.com blog last year. He is definitely , an excellent young vainika to watch out for !!

Thanks!

Sreeni, I don't have access to a clip but request one of Ashwin, who, I believe, is a reader of this forum...

Can someone post a solo of this vidwan and indicate when he is performing in Bangalore next ?
Thanks.

Shri Ashwin Anand is an extremely talented vainika. A refined sense of aesthetics and a leisurely approach filled with sokhyam and deep involvement are hallmarks of his playing. With Shri Ashwin's permission, I post below two links, one from a 2007 Naada Inbam concert, and the other from his 2009 Naada Inbam concert. The second link features a sedate and beautiful kAmbhOji followed by shri subrahmaNyAya namastE. Chennai rasikas would find it more than worthwhile to attend concerts by this excellent young musician.

Hi all,

Firstly, thanks very much to Ramki for having attended my mini-program a couple of weeks back and for the wonderful review.. I am indeed flattered :D. Thanks also to my dear friend Prashant for posting the recordings!

As Ramki has mentioned, I started my musical training in 1987 under Late Sangeetha Kalarathna Prof. H.V.Krishnamurthy, Principal, Vijaya College of Music, Bangalore. Although a renowned violinist, he also played the veena expertly. Since 2006, I have been under the tutelage of Sangeetha Kalanidhi Vidushi R Vedavalli, Chennai.

Regarding my upcoming concerts, I am performing in Rajarajeshwari Nagar Cultural Committee, Bangalore on Oct 12th @ 6:30pm. My next concert in Chennai is at the Music Academy on Dec 23rd (12pm).

Best regards,
Ashwin
