Institute of Ethnomusick

Truly a labour of love...

Rare musical haul

Anasuyaa Kulakarni blows into a piston flute and gently tugs at the stick inside. A lilting melody, like a beautiful birdsong, emerges.
This bamboo flute from Thailand is just one of the many exotic musical instruments from around the world that this feted Indian classical musician has housed in a room at her home in Bangalore. It is officially called Institute of Ethnomusick and has about 300 musical instruments from around the world and counting! The rarity of these instruments has made this museum a must-visit for music-lovers.

Among those who have visited are Karnatik music giant M Balamuralikrishna, doyen RK Srikantan, renowned percussionist Vikku Vinayak Ram, violin maestro Lalgudi Jayaraman, famed musicologist and dance scholar Pappu Venugopal Rao, well-known vocalist OS Thiagarajan, besides respected musicians like SAK Durga, VV Srivatsa, VKrishna, Suguna Purushottaman, etc.

... <really worth reading the whole article>

Has anyone on this forum been to this place? Sounds quite fascinating.

r-t,
I have heard her in concert and it was quite an experience. I even wrote my impressions about the concert in the forum a few years ago. She has lived in many parts of the world (her husband's job took her to many places). She is trained in HM too, I think. She took an interest in learning to play the instruments of the countries she lived in. With about a dozen others stage, each playing an instrument, she gave a performance which appealed to the listeners--even to those few musicians I saw in the audience.

I guess the name for this bamboo flute is "anklung" if I remember right and she did present this on January 1st, 2007, in the Music Academy's morning session .

The spelling "musick" , with a "c" intervention is rather an (a'musing) oddity !!!, especially when there are avid therapists who want to cure the "sick" with music.
