Post by radhikashetty »

Hi,

Can somebody please help me with the corrections to the lyrics of this viruttam/slokam on Lord Muruga.
A brief meaning would be great too. Thank you in advance.

Adum Mayil Mel Amarone
Anai Mugatthavanak kileyone
Edinai Ellaam Eshan Maghane
Egha Para Sukham Tharum Shanmughane
Yenni Yegugiraal Enr Yedith Sholladi Vara Sholladi

Radhika - here you go:

ADum mayil mEl amarOnE
Anai mug(kh)attavanukk(u)iLaiyOnE
IDu iNaiyillA ISan maganE
ika para sukham tarum shaNmug(kh)anE
yeNNi ENgugirAL enr(u)edir SollaDI vara SollaDi

One who sits (amarOnE) atop (mEl) a dancing (ADum) peacock (mayil)|
One who is a younger sibling (iLaiyOnE) for the elephant (Anai) faced one (mugattavanukku)|
The incomparable (IDu iNai illA) [1] son (maganE) of Siva (ISan)|
The six (shaN) faced one (muganE) who grants (tarum) joy (sukham) both in this world (ika/iha) and in heaven (para)||
Please tell (edir SollaDi) him that (enru) she is pining away (EngugirAL) thinking (eNNi) of you. Ask him/tell him (SollaDi) to come (vara) to her.
[1] IDu iNai illA literally means 'without (illA) equal (IDu) or comparison (iNai)'

Thank you so much, Ravi. That was real quick :)
Any idea of the source of this slokam? I just have it written down.

I have no clue about the origins. Rajani may know.
