The Cultural Council of IIT Mumbai organized a 2 hour programme on 10th October 10 evening with the first session for Carnatic music concert which our Thyagarajadasa alias Gokul Chandramouli performed .
First things first. The 75 odd capacity hall was packed with the bright looking IIT students and few outsiders like me. That’s really a heartening development. Wish IIT organizes more such classical concerts as IIT is a place of multi cultural convergence.
In line with the Navratri season, Gokul started with Nee Sari saTi , a Kriti of Shri Ponnaiah P , set to Kalyani raga. The alapana was nice and the kriti was well sung.
Then came the main raga Bhairavi. An elaborate alapana was followed by a very good Violin work. The kriti was Kamakshi Amba , a Shri Shyama Shastri kriti. There was neraval and swarajathi too at the end and the Violin returns were praiseworthy.
Rohit Prasad , within the 5 minute timespan, did a mini Thani avarthanam admirably !
Gokul ended the concert with Krishna Nee begane .
Nice to see the team efficiently doing the time management well within the 1 hour allotted wherein we could have a kriti, alapana, neraval, swarajathi and thaniavarthanam too !
Mrs. Geetha Gulvady took over and performed Hindustani vocal for the next 1 hour .
Wish, we see more and more concerts of Thyagarajadasa in the years to come
