PB,
Who is the singer?
I am glad veLLait tAmarai has found a place in CM performances these days. I loved the song as a child and when Kalki asked me to sing an invocation at the bhArati vizhA just like that at Ettaypuram, without hesitating a moment, I sang my favorite song--and then looked around to see the crowd which was gathered there. Luckily, it was then that stage fright struck me!

That was by
Padma Bhushan, Sangita Kalanidhi, Dr.
Smt. M.L. Vasanthakumari.

There are two more songs of Bharati rendered by MLV in Tamil movies:-
Chinnanchiru Kiliye, 'Manamagal', 1951
Kani Nilam Vendum, 'Andaman Kaithi', 1952

PB,
:$ I first thought it was her, and then thought it was someone else, singing 'like' her! For some reason, I thought that the delivery (in uccarippu?) was somewhat different :(

There is one more song which comes to mind.: her 'enta vEDukontu' (singing on concert stage as it were) in KrishNa Bhakti. Year 1949?

The Tamil movie Krishna Bhakti was released in 1948.

The article in The Hindu by Randor Guy provides information on 'enta vEDukontu' by MLV:-
"Not many are aware that Carnatic music icon M. L. Vasanthakumari appeared on screen in a regal court sequence, and sang ‘Entha Vedukonthu O Raghava….’ in Raaga Saraswathi Manohari."

Most probably, within a day or two, I would be getting the Krishna Vijayam 'enta vEDukontu' by MLV.

I note that this is one of your favourite songs -- vide your post #24 15 Jul 2009 under Carnatic Music » General > Your most favorite song - E.

Thanks!
I think you meant Krishna Bhakti. I think MLV wore spider web-like earrings in that scene. I also remember P.U.C's dramatic 'kadai' and his drinking a potful of beverage discretely ;) I can recollect very little of JagatalapratApan, though I remember how eagerly I looked forward to Krishna Bhakti. PUC must a made a 'big' impression on me!
