Whomsoever comes under the enchantment of this singer's great gifts, will agree with me that she is not an interpreter of Meera, but Meera herself. Take her into your hearts, cherish her. You will be proud that India in this generation has produced so supreme an artist."

cienu - those words are as prophetic as they are poetic! They evoked the same sentiments I felt when I listened to Albert Einstein's tribute to Gandhiji used in Attenborough's film ("generations to come will scarce believe.."). And thank you for that absolutely lovely picture (of the empress of word and the empress of music). And ghosh, how young your mother was - what an amazing experience she must have had, meeting people who were truly great and inspiring at such a young age! I have read that her autograph book is a treasure trove...

The poet's vision extends to future generations too, as we see for ourselves!
The more we ponder upon her, the more we marvel as to how this extraordinary woman, to the end of her life did not lose her natural self, in spite of her tremendous talents and accomplishments which brought fame to her from every corner of the world. She did not change an iota. If anything, she evolved in her music and spirituality. Even that came naturally to her, I think!

Cienu,
It was great seeing the titles in Hindi too! Beginning with your grandfather's name and ending with Ellis.R. Dungan's. Your mother may not be beaming in this picture, but how expressive her face is! She reminds me of her younger grand daughter. But for your mother's zeal for collecting memorabilia, we wouldn't have been able to see these cherished pictures. I see her wearing those fashionable (in those days!) high-heeled sandals, fidgeting as it were, ready to go home after a long tiring day, perhaps!

This is a song which Salem D Chellam Iyengar used to teach my sisters in 1950's. It had gone into my head everlastingly and I used to think of it very often-the two deers which Sita and Rama
encountered in the forest during their exile.
Vacamagocarame-kaikavazi Thyagarajar- The story of two deers?

You can read it and listen to it -by Smt MSS at this link.

Cienu: That picture brought tears to my eyes! What radiance and Tejas exuded by the couple!!!

Not a day passes without my thanking God for giving me the opportunity to move closely with your family.Along with that pic of your Mom ,Patti and Sarojini Naidu There was another pic taken with just your Mom,Thatha and Patti(your Mom in Pavadai)--this was one of the pics "salvaged' by my mom during one of Thatha's famous tirades, tearing a whole set of memorabilia pics--but alas, Semmangudi Mama saw it in our house in Matunga and snatched it much to my Mom's chagrin!!! Any chance you happen to have a copy of the pic? Ask your Mom. All three of them looked great in that pic.

BTW,please send me your tel# thro the Admin--would like to talk to your Mom.

Cienu: Nice article!! Revives old fond memories--ask your Mom--about the incident where Thatha responded spontaneously for a donation request when he asked Patti to unload whatever jewelery she had at that moment-I think this was for the Kasturbha Memorial Fund--also HOW attached Thatha and Patti were to the Gandhi family--I remember I think it was 1945 or 46(it was in Bombay in the late Sivaramakrishna Iyer's house) when they got the news of Kasturbha Gandhi's death and Thatha observed mourning for one full year--also I think for Hari Thum Haro tuning one Mr.Haripada Sankar was associated--in what capacity I do not recall at this moment--Ask your Mom. The responding to Mahathma Gandhi's request is typical of Thatha--anything worth doing should be done rightaway--be it spreading national Integration thro Patti's music--take the Bengali song--Hamare Janmabhoomi-- I remember the painstaking effort to get the bengali accent right--same with the Gujarati song--same before the Vishnusahasranamam recording intense learning of Sanskrit-the Pandit used to come from Mambalam and because Kilpauk was not easily accessible by bus(without atleast one transfer in the early fifties) most of the days Thatha arranged for transport of the Pandit.

For the Hindi Meera filming extensive teaching of Hindi by the late Ra Veezhinathan( Asst Editor of Kalki and also the translator of Hindi novels of Premchand in Kalki). The late Ra Veezhinathan was a mild-mannered man--totally in awe and respectful of Thatha and Patti and yet Patti and your Mom's(your Mom would be playful at times --her natural instinct!!) attention will be riveted and the genuine reverence shown towards a teacher(despite her own mighty stature) should be seen to be believed.

What was amazing was that Patti retained that same respect and reverence for Elders-Pandits,Acharyas,Musicians even in her Eighties--after receiving the Bharata Rathna.

The Sanskrit statement Na Bhooth Na Bhavishyath fits Patti to the core!!!

I am so glad that you are doing so much to preserve the heritage. Posterity will thank you for your untiring efforts. May God bless you!!

Hello,

Is there any recording of Dwaitamu Sukhama by MS? Can some one clarify if MS has sung some of the trademark songs of SSI like Pankaja Lochana, Marubalka, Bhavapriya Song, Dinamani Vamsa etc...having learnt them from the doyen himself..If so, can some one point out any commercial concert recording or can some one post these songs from their collection?

Regards,
Aditya.

Dwaitamu Sukhama & Bhavapriya have not been sung.
Pankaja Lochana, Marubalka and Dinamani Vamsa were learnt from Semmangudi. Pankaja Lochana was sung in a few concerts , but no recording exists. Marubalka too has been sung but not too frequently. Dinamani Vamsa has been sung on a number of occasions. Please find below a link to the song from a Brahma Gana Sabha 1971 concert

This concert was in Singapore.
The gentleman in question is the Pioneer of Tamil in Singapore and a great philanthropist, Vallal Govindaswamy Pillai , who had invited MS to perform in Singapore.
A link below provides more information about the person.

Cienu: It was during the US visit arranged by CVN--not Singapore. An interesting tidbit during the tour that started in NY(Carnegie Hal,Queens College in Queens NY and Poughkeepsie NY) was that Mama asked me to send a cablegram to Bhagavan Sathya Sai Babha after each concert was over stating how the concert went well due to His Blessings. I do not know if in the other venues Mama asked anybody to do the same. As forumites may be aware the tour itself started after the troubles with the Magazine and the estate having to be sold and Mama and Mami flew straight to NY for the concert tour --and landed in pretty disspirited condition and Mama consoled her that with Bhabha's blessings which he gave on the eve of their departure to the US, assuring them that the Tour would be a resounding success which it was --the proceeds of the concerts went to the Hindu temple in Flushing and other charitable causes in the US and UK.

Anyother persons in similar situations would have used the commercial success of the tour to rehabilitate themselves financially.

While on one hand our family was privileged to host them after they landed in NY I cannot forget Mami's mild lament about the plight of having to vacate the house they had lived in for over 30 years where all kinds of political and Cultural History had been made and Mama's typical "booster" comment--afterall we did not come into this world with all these possessions and we are not going to take them with us after we are gone and WHY this attachment to these transient things --that remark may have consoled Mami but I could not but shed a tear for a Great soul who had been rendered literally homeless for no fault of hers.

To have been around when such a Great soul lived and to have been in such loving contact,is one of the greatest blessings that our family cherishes.

A rare picture of MMI watching a Bharatanatyam performance by Radha. (date - between 1947 to 1950.) MMI is seated at the extreme left.
I think this is probably the only picture (atleast in my mother's collection) in which both MMI and MS are there (Maybe VKV could correct me if I am wrong).
Also in picture are Vazhuvoor Ramaiah Pillai , a young Vijaya and Kalki Kannan standing behind near the lights.

Cienu - what a lovely picture! B&W pictures seem to possess a poignancy that the color ones seem to lack. And the detail is astonishing - everyone seems to be in clear focus...one can see details like the 'nattu' your mother is wearing, and possibly even the hooks attaching the 'periya visiri' to the rest of the outfit! The photograph is also a testament to how the pyjama costume has changed over time, with the periya visiri getting longer and longer.
Do you know why there are so many pU mAlais around? And what was the occasion, and what was the piece being danced?

Dear Cienu,
Thanks for posting what I can only describe as a Picture for the AGES! In one shot it not only brings back fond memories of the Golden Times of my youth as well as others who grew up in Madras in the forties&fifties. I consider it an invaluable snapshot of the EXCITEMENT of those times.....The pics of Kalki Kannan & Vijaya evoke Nostalgic memories of those times. Though I have seen MMI& M.S. together in group pics of musicians etc this is the first one in which I have seen them in such informal settings. I know that they have met& discussed Music though they were reticient in going into details etc for obvious reasons but the Mutual Admiration was openly expressed.......
As you know Last year Your mother Radha's appearance& concert at Cleveland was the HIGHLIGHT of the Festival; This year we are celebrating the centeneray of Vazhuvoor Ramiah Pillai. Next year we hope to celebrate MMI'S Centenary. Of course M.S.Amma is the Presiding Deity when Twentieth Century not only in Music but the history of India & Independence Movement is part of the subject matter. I want to write an article JUST based on this picture for next year's Cleveland Brochure & wonder if I can use this picture as the basis of my feelings, remarks & observations...... Incidentally I have a Request/Suggestion: If you can let the tape recorder roam free & capture your mother's recollections& remarks, it would be INVALUABLE for posterity especially for those who consider that period to reflect the BEST in our culture, Fine Arts& Music......VKV
