Talamalika

Post by sankar »

We have ragamalikas but do we have Talamalika in any composition ie., a song set in different talas ? Saint Thiru Gnana Sambandar has composed a padhigam named Thiruthalachchadi _ source: monthly tamil spiritual magazine Dheivamurasu, Sept., 2010.

Dear Sankar,

Mrs. Suguna Varadachari knows a Pancha Thala Ragamalika. Which I have not heard
till now.

On my request, she had promised to sing the same in her next concert {Date not confirmed
till now”].

I would be happy if any Rasika is having a recording for sharing.

Please read the article at http://www.hinduonnet.com/thehindu/fr/2 ... 420400.htm
He seems to have composed around 108 talamalikas. 35 talamalikas seems to have been published at Music Academy’s journal by Mythali Ranganathan , grand daughter of Nerur Sreenivasachariar. See http://www.musicacademymadras.in/articl ... _index.php

“Ramaswamy Dikshadar has composed 'Ashtottara Shata Raga-Tala malika', commencing with the phrase 'Natakadi'. Which is is a Ragatalamalika containing 108 Ragas and set in 108 Talas, one for each line. However, the original text unfortunately seems to be not available of which only 61 Ragas and 61 Talas have come down to us. The text that is presently available can be found in Subbarama Dikshitar's encyclopedic treatise, Sangeeta Sampradaya Pradarsini.” This is provided by Shri PP Narayanaswamy at:

You can listen ( Partly) to Vyjayantimala – Todaya Mangalam ( Raga, Tala Malika ) at

http://www.last.fm/music/Vyjayantimala/ ... ala+Malika+)

You can view a Todaya Mangalam nattiam at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hcVgJvhNw38 and
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=81eg1GcBm5k&NR=1

Perhaps 72 melakartha ragamalika can not be put under this category as they do not carry the talamudra in the composition.

This subject was discussed in another thread "Kritis in multiple talams" during august 10.
Shri lakshmanan has provided a few kirities -vk ,arasi and others have provided
deeper insight in to this talamalika.
In another thread under Kutcheri Reviews & Recordings ( March 10) Shri karaharapriyajanyam
reviewed a concert by Smt Suguna Varadhachari where she rendered a rAgamAlika in 7 rAgas - tOdi, pUrvikalyAni, bhairavi, varAli, kAmbhOji,kalyAni and mukhAri(not in order) and 7 thalams- dhruva. matya, rupaka, jampa, triputa, ata and eka composed by one of the Tanjore Quartette. This was a tamizh rAgamAlika and was extremely classical, in 7 rAgas and 7 thAlas.

Mod may consider whether these threads can be merged.
