Smt. Viji Subramaniam was ably accompanied by Shri. Srikanth Venkataraman on the violin and Shri. Rajesh Salem on the mridangam. The concert started with a lec-dem on the topic "Ragas in Indian Fim Music". Smt. VS discussed the ragas - Nattai, Kaapi, Sivaranjani, Kalyani and Sindhu Bhairavi. In addition to using audio clips from Tamil and Hindi films, her student Deepika Srinivasan also provided the vocals for some of the fim songs. Smt. VS was very well spoken and made the lec-dem very interactive by asking the audience to guess the ragas. At the end, she mentioned that she would be singing some of these ragas in the main concert and she challenged us to recognize them correctly - the youngest winner would be awarded one of her CDs :) The lec-dem was very highly appreciated by the audience.

The main concert was extremely good - Smt. VS covered a wide variety of composers (in fact no composer was repeated) and languages as well. Her rendition of "Janani Ninnuvinaa" and "Ragavendra Ragavendra" deserves special mention. There was a lot of bhakthi in these songs and I could see that several members of the audience were moved to tears listening to them. The alapanai in Thodi for "Kaddanuvaariki" was very impressive and so was Shri. Shrikanth's violin version of the alapanai and the ensuing thani by Shri. Rajesh. My personal favorite was "Nadasukham" in the part-vivaadhi ragam Kanthamani. Smt. VS sang this beautifully... a testimony to her amazing repertoire of Melakartha compositions and a consequence of her rich tutelage under Shri.S. Rajam!

It was a beautiful concert - very satisfying but it left us longing for a Ragam-Thanam-Pallavi :)
Next time, we'll have to bring her in for a long concert sans the lec-dem so that we can have more of her singing.
