Help Needed: Concerts in Music Academy and KGS

Post by gardabha_gana »

Hi,
I am attending 5 days of the concert season with my mom - and need some help

1. Daily tickets for Music academy - especially for folks such as Sanjay, bombay Jayashree etc - can one get in advance ? I believe they give out limited tickets on the same day. Is this true ? If so,
1 - how early should one go in the morning to get tickets
2 - how many tickets do they give out.
3 - how much are the tickets usually

2. I would request the same for KGS (Krishna Gana Sabha)

Thanks much
-Srikanth

U can get tickets in advance in both the sabhas. If any tickets are left out,U may get on the day of the concert.U also have a chance to view on a wide screen in the mini hall @ MA by paying Rs.75 which is the last option if all tickets are sold out.Normally the ticket costs Rs.150 for balcony and from Rs.300 onwards for downstairs.U can sit in the dais for Rs.50.

The tickets are priced from Rs.50 to Rs.1000 (?) @ KGS.Advance booking is advised at both the places for the concerts of artists U have mentioned.

In music academy apart from season tickets, on every day morning of the concert they sell tickets , for musicians like Aruna Sayeeram people come very very early. With regards to getting tickets just before the concert , music academy will make you wait for atleast 15 to 20 minutes after that concert starts , they will do a bit of survey inside the audi and then only sell tickets .

At times you miss almost 30 minutes of concert to get the tickets. Academy to that extent is not conducive to rasikas like me who always make plans in the last 1 hour for the concert and I generally try to avoid those sabhas which does not give me the freedom to make last hour decisions and make me stand in queue to miss significant first half .

To the best of my knowledge SKGS apart from Aruna's concert will still have tickets and you can go at the last half an hour to first hour before the start and just get into concert.

ON a general note keep your options open to hear in sabhas like MFACVanimahal, Mudhra etc which has lots of seats where you can decide to go the concerts at the last hour. Personally I am not a big fan of the best of best stereos like dolby and great comfort seats , for me carnatic music that does not require all that paraphrenalia.

You should also consider NGS (narada gana sabha) as an option. It's walking distance from music academy.
You can find the schedules at one of the several sites, e.g. kutcheris.com

Trying to attend the top artists in top sabhas can be really painful. I listened to Malladi from the mini hall where they have put a cinema show of the actual concert. People did not know if they can clap or not, as, after all, they are seeing a movie and not a concert :) For other artists I could not even get that. My sincere advice is that you should concentrate on less popular but equally good young artists. Not big crowds for them and most of them are free. You can enjoy the way you dream of attending a season concert. The BIG ones are a disaster from a visiting rasika's point of view.

gardabha_gana,

Folks like Sanjay and Bombay Jayashree are called reasonably often in Bangalore itself, in my observation. You could try listening to Parasalla Ponnammal, Kalpakam Swaminathan, etc. ;)

srikant - agreed - my mom has decided to come - and my principal aim is to take her where she wants to :) If I were to go by myself - it's another matter. BTW - I do plan on going to vedavalli, E. Gayathri and Vijaya Siva.

BTW Parasalla ponnammal - whom I have always wanted to listen to live - haven't :( - the only slot i see is MA on 28th (when I will not be there). Does anyone know if the vidushi is performing anywhere else ?
