Ms.Savita Narasimhan, BVB, 02/12/10

Accompaniments:

Violin : Smt.Charulata Ramanujam (CR)
Mri : Shri.Ganapathy Raman (GR)
Kamjira:Shri Papanasam Sethuraman (PSR)

Vidushi Savita Narasimhan (SN) sang an extraordinary PoorviKalyani(PK) alapanai for the song ParamapAvanaRamA which was the main in this cocert. She really explored into the intricacies of this raga and brought out the beauties that was a result of caliber coupled with hard work.Having a mellifluous and floating voice that can catch up and deliver any sangathi is a real asset and she is using it prudently..I am a rasika who is normally un happy if PK is taken as main. But she really made me sit up and listen and at once I understood that to make or mar is in the hands of the artist and the ragam was not at fault. There was N & S @ the usual kanakAmbara followed by a crisp thani by GR & PSR.

NinnADa nEla in Kannada act as a filler between the sub-main & the main.

The sub-main was Mukhari. The alapanai was o.k.I felt she should have ventured into the thara sthayi little more.Violinist CR’s reply was emotive replete with the feelings of agonies & pangs characteristic of the raga. The N,S were @ kannulAra sevinchi.

Earlier SN sang a lively Bhuvaneswariya in Mohana Kalyani with beautiful svarams @ pallavi that delineated the beauty of the ragam. She also sang Sombaina in Ahiri with utmost bhAvam.

Post thani she sang a virutham PonnArmeniyanE in SahanA,Sindhubhairavi and KhamAs followed by Theruvil vArAnO.A beautiful rendition and rounded off with a Thirupugazh(?) in BehAg.

After the concert when the crowd was dispersing I heard Mylai mAmAs & mAmis showering encomiums on SN.A mAmA remarked to another “bold & sweet” singing and I liked that phrase at once.SN’s parents would have been happier to hear those comments and my happiness was no lesser.

Thank you ganeshkant for the review. I am very proud of SN and her style of Music presentation. Beneath the deceptive simplicity of sangathis, run deep rivers of melody and detail. I had attended a workshop of hers in the Bay Area where she taught us vivaadi kritis of St Tyagaraja and some rare Sanskrit kritis of OVK.

Currently learning from her over Skype. Thoroughly enjoying every class. She is on a sabbatical right now due to the season. So am I. :( :tmi:
