Nadaloka, Bangalore had arranged its second Prabhatha Sangeetham today. Manasi Prasad presented an 1 hour concert 7-8 am. No pakkavadhyam. She played her own tambura. She proved to be the most suitable choice for this serene occasion. About 25-30 attended with minimum publicity. Really soulful experience. Manasi should probably develop this as her niche speciality- Beautiful bhakti sangeetham. May be a little bit of training in naama sankeerthanam will help (like anup jalota). Her training in music will be helpful. She may not qualify to shine as a top rung carnatic vocalist but has all the ingredients to give a captivating, pure bhakti geetham. No alapana, neraval, swaram, etc.,
Now the list.
1. Melukovaiya- Thy
2. Bhaja Manasa Vigneswaram anisam
3. Brindvanadevi
4. Ragamalika virutham/ oogabooga?- Hey Gopala Kripanidhe followed by
Gokula nilaya Kripala palaya in Abheri
6. Yaman Kalyani- Sri Ramachandra Kripalu Bhajamane
7. Oruththi maganai piranthu- Tiruppavai- Behag- Several mix ups in pronunciation between La and zha. But Manasi being a young non-tamilian, it was amusing and enjoyable, like that of a child's "mazhalai"! (What is it in english?)
8. Pandareecha vasa - Abhang
9. Ninne Dhyanada Sakthiye Kodu- viruham followed by Govinda Gopala Gopika Vallabha Goverdhana dharaka- beautiful rhyme- don't know the composer.
10. Maithreem bhajatha
Good programme. Thanks, Nadaloka.

kssr,
A good review. Yes, Manasi seems to have that emotive quality in presenting a bhakti theme. I agree with you that to make it in the CM world is not easy these days, with so many young gifted vocalists around. Manasi has many talents and she will do very well in areas other than serious CM.
It's always heartening when singers choose to sing in languages other than their own. Her mazhalai (baby talk, lisping?) is to be appreciated--that too, in tough and ancient tamizh!

KSSR and Arasi avare,
I do not think Manasi is spread too thin in her talents (I remember this being suggested in an earlier thread by someone). She may have run into a poor form on an occasion or two, but because of that we (rasikas) should not suggest that she consider focusing on something other than "hardcore sangIta"
She is quite young, has had good training and she has talent. I hope you will agree with me when I say that it is not uncommon to see many youngsters whose music has gotten better (matured) over the years.
Based on this, I think it would be fair for us to be supportive of her rather than discouraging her.

Sreeni,
Oh, no. I didn't mean it in a discouraging way at all! After all, it's up to Manasi to choose what she wants to do with several of her artistic talents. Just that a career in CM (or in any other form of art) needs undivided attention when it comes to honing herself as a performer. What I said didn't mean at all that she is not good enough. Far from that!
