Idaivida Vera Vendumo Sakshi

Post by radhikashetty »

Request for the lyrics & meaning of the Padam, Idaivida Vera Vendumo Sakshi in ragam Suruti, Rupaka taalam & I guess the composer is Subbarama Iyer.

Searched the forum & google, but couldn't find anything related to this padam.

Thank you.
Radhika.

Here you go: I have made a couple of changes in the AP based on what I've heard before....
This is another padam that comes under the category of 'When God is the Customer'. Based on the sensibilities of the times being portrayed in this composition, (carnal) love was not only a prized emotion, but also considered to be the path for the jIvAtma to merge with the paramAtma. To experience love in all its multifaceted hues, jealousy was thought to be very important, and hence, compositions such as these, where the 'other women' and feelings of neglect and anger form the central theme.

pallavi
idai viDa innum vErE vENumA sAkSi
onrum illai enru kOTi paravasham eDutturaikkirIr, aDukkum pOm pOm

Is there a need (vENumA) for any (vErE) more (innum) proof (sAkshi), in addition (viDa) to these (idai)? Stop (aDakkum) taking these countless (kOTi) oaths (paravaSam) to explain (eDutturaikkirIr) to me that (enru) there is nothing (onrum illai) going on. Please go away (pOm, pOm)!

anupallavi
mati tavazh taNikAcalam vAzhum subrahmaNya lOlarE anda vanjiyuDan
kUDi konji aNaindiTTa maik-kuriyum manjaL vADaiyum sholludE (idai viDa…)

Oh subrahmaNya, the dallier (lOlarE) who lives (vAzhum) in moon-lit (madi tavazh) [1] tiruttaNi (taNikAcalam)! The smears (kuriyum) of collyrium (mai) and the smell (vADaiyum) of turmeric (manjaL) speak volumes (SolludE) of your meeting (kUDi) [2] with (uDan), caressing (konji) and having embraced (aNaindiTTa) that (anda) other woman (vanji). (Do I need any more proof…?)

caraNam
ettanai shonnAlum en shevik-kErkkumO ennattukku vIN pEccu
avaLinnOkkam engengO tEDurALO pAvam ezhundirum nEramAccu
buddhi illAdavaL pOle nIreNNittAn bOdhikirIr mEipOl sAdhikkirIr
anda vida tozhil ellAm kUTTi vaiyum! mAr mIdil nagam paTTa pOdE teriyAdO (idai viDa...)

However many (ettanai) excuses (SonnAlum) you make, will it be acceptable (ErkkumO) to/for my (en) ears (Sevikku)? Then, what's the purpose (ennattukku) of these empty/useless (vIN) words (pEccu)? It's getting late (nEramAccu), get up (ezhindirum). The poor thing (pAvam)! Who knows where (engengO) her (avaLin) eyes/glances (nOkkam) are searching (tEDurALO) for you? You (nIr) must really believe (eNNittAn) that I am like (pOle) a brainless (buddhi illAdavaL) simpleton, for you to try and convince (bOdhikirIr) me, and insist passionately (sAdhikirIr), as if (pOle) it were really true (mei). Please put away (kUTTi vaiyum) all (ellAm) those (anda) types (vida) of endevours (tozhil)! Didn't you know (teriyAdO) (that I will not need any more proof) at the very second (pOdE) you felt (paTTa) her nails (nagam) on (mIdil) your chest (mAr)?

FOOTNOTES
[1] madi tavazh could also be an adjective for subrahmaNya, in which case it will mean 'handsome' - someone whose face shines like the moon
[2] kUDi also means sexual union, especially in this context
