Though there are no traditional methodology to elaborate a given raga,SSP has moorchanas which are essentially nuances / phrases pertaining to the grammar of that raga.So in order to sing raga alapana it is advisable to sing akAram in varnams and certain phrases from kritis.
As of MMG the starting phrase can end in G and you should anchor in G.To move on U can sing moorchanaas in P and N and U can do the sancharam in the higher octave following the same note.
Essential phrases:
GMPMG
MGPMGRG MPDMPMG MGRSRG
GMPP PDP PDNDP PDPM GMPM MPD PDN S
