Let me start off: heard around 4-5 concerts so far - RK Srikantan, TNK (both in the Carnatica series), Trichy Sankaran's tani concert at Asthika Samajam, NSG & Sowmya at Margazhi Utsavam (Jaya TV). Thinking of VVS violin tonight at Mudra...

Season 2010 Twitter...
We had this thread in past seasons with members' daily plans, tidbits, photos, etc. Why not have it again?

Re: Season 2010 Twitter...
Attended Mohan Santhanam's concert .
Mysore Srikanth was in top form . Raja Rao was very soothing and delightful . He spoke of his Thani as something he had conceived during Vijaydashmi - ( dont ask me for more , laya disabled that I am , I am just repeating what I heard ) a Mohra with 64 split as 32 and 32 and that 32 split as 24 + 8 .And that transition from 24 to 8 was a difficult thing.
Made sense to anyone ? If not... forget it .
The vocal concert itself was a gripping one . Beautiful Varna in Kalyani - Vanajakshi ( Boy it such a delight - as good as Viriboni in Bhairavi ) , expansive Balagopala ( he refrained from touching some of the telling/ distinguishing phrases in bhairavi that I know , and I wondered why ) , a very classy and even more expansive Janaranjani - Nannu brovarada .
Audience strength was good ( about 50 ) . Accoustics - one of the best , one can hope for , in this season. Very pleasant on the ears.
Overall a Good to Very Good concert on the Richter's - oops , sorry ...Rajeshnat's scale

Good idea to revive the thread.
I regret that my throat/chest problems that began two weeks ago today continue to rob me of both energy and enthusiasm. Since 31st/11 I have only made it to one concert, that of Smt R Vedavalli. I hope to see Amrutha Venkatesh this evening, but my poor wife is getting fed up with me answering every "shall we?" question with, "I don't know, ask later".
Poor RV was looking unwell too, but the professionals do not have the luxury of giving up and staying at home and, as the absolutely professional artist that she is, she still sang beautifully.

Simply gorgeous pictures!
As exciting to see these 'studies of the season' as those in the dIpavali malars (annuals) of Ananda vikatan and Kalki in our childhood days!
Ramanathan,
Thanks for sharing them with us!

Ramanathan - Lovely! Thanks for sharing...
My picks from the album (in addition to the one you've posted here, #49) would be #80 - the young dancer, #65 a pensive Sriram with the light reflected from the wall behind him casting a 'halo', and #29 a gorgeous picture of Smt. Alarmelvalli! Is that Smt. Rama Vaidyanathan at the extreme right (for the viewer) in #71?

Ramanathan, you're on your way to being another Raghu Rai ! - the capture and angle of that pensive-immersed profile of a rasika, all grey, is so telling, the one of the delight and attention of the very young girl holding on to a large handbag says she might be a CM star herself not too far off.... the razor keen sidelong glance of TM Krishna in b& w as he casts a look at someone in the audience ... and much more...The one you have posted here on this thread is sublime.....very thrilling pictures that are deep and meaningful on their own. Love them.
Great work. Hope you'll get some shots to post on the Rasikas meet, 19th, for the non-attendees to enjoy.

There is a Lec Dem on rare thalas in Hindusthani Music , tomorrow . By Sakuntala Narasimhan . At Parthasarathy Sabha .
People who attend this can see a prodigy , by her side . A very young kid . I am personally amazed at the talent of this boy , who is being carefully trained . Having heard him do utterly butterly wonderful things at close quarters , I have no doubts left , about the idea of carrying memories and work , from Janma to Janma .

Re: Season 2010 Twitter...
Several times, I have enjoyed a really good concert by someone unknown to me by going to see one of the accompanists. Tonight, by going to see Madirimangalam Swaminithan (who I have waiting months to see for the second time), I discovered Tamarakkadu Govindan Nambudiri, who gave a wonderfully weighty concert tonight at Raga Sudha. Weighty... but with a light touch. The combination with V V Ravi was sublime.
M Swaminathan's thani (with Udupi S Balakrishnan) actually brought a tear to my eye, and there are not many than can do that (Oh yes there are, cry some rasikas, but tears of a different sort
). His playing is astonishing.
My wife tells me that, from the main neraval onwards, I had the biggest smile on my face she has ever seen!

NICK,
YOU are indeed VERY astute! M.S's handling of the THOPPI as well as other aspects of his GURU PALANI'S STYLE is closest to PALANI we will get to hear!......VKV

I am looking at concert schedules and have a question: what is the general quality of music at Rama Bhaktha Jana Samaj (KK Nagar)? Several artistes I'm interested in listening to are singing/playing there and I've never been to this sabha. Any pointers are appreciated. Thanks.

Thank you, VKV, but you only taught me, when I saw him before, that his style was closest to that of PSP himself!cacm wrote:NICK,

The PSP heritage was obvious to me at once, but only on this forum, after the concert, did I discover that he was PSP's direct student. Curiously, some googling just a few minutes ago, led me to an article about PSP, written by... none other than yourself!
Strangely, I can hear more of the way that my guruji plays in M.S.'s style, than I can of others of that generation such as our Balaji and Arun Prakash, although they are firmly established as favourites of mine too. Perhaps it is to do with his having initially learnt from N Ramaswamy Pillai? I suppose I should ask him! Regrettably, I'm afraid that Balachandar is firmly planted in London now, and we are unlikely to see him visiting Chennai to play

As a venue , it is only single star due its accoustics . I am assuming it is held at the KK Nagar School Central Hall- Padma Seshadri .
But as things have turned out for me , one of my best concert experience was there when Sowmya sang a very very memorable one - several years ago .
I was passing this venue in the evening , was tired and exhausted, when I saw the board outside and drove in .
So one never knows .
But I assume you dont have the luxury of taking chances .
You may have to contend with some obnoxious speeches by stalwart veteral sabha officiandos who will describe the concert in such detail , only to show that they know almost everything except performing . Like the swimming expert who has never touched water .
I can never explain the magic of Hyderabad Brothers when they first exploded , on the chennai season, Decades ago. I was seated just behind TNS and the Kalyani they sang was fit for the Gods .
I have never seen them repeat that kind of Manodharma again .
The audience is a very knowledgeable one and so if you like be part of one , drop in for one concert . |(
If I have confused you more , I will offer to drive you down for a concert there .

Thimma, thanks a lot for sharing your experience with the sabha. It sounds quite fascinating, actually! I may give it a try.
Wherever the rasikas are discerning, the musician is also inspired to perform better, I have found. I have a very high tolerance for neverending speeches, so that's not a problem. I have been conditioned by the most boring lecturers droning on and on in college.

has given a lot of inputs. The concert is held in PSBB KK Nagar .I have listened to three or more concerts, the acoustics is just ok (1 to 2 stars), you have a pretty decent crowd . I think one of the sabha patrons there keeps talking a lot , the concerts are always 2 hours or 2 hours 15 minutes --- this reason alone may be something that you have to look into.

Coimbatore Ramaswamy Pillai, yes... I get these initials mixed up, despite having been corrected several times, and despite the fact that one's guru's parampara should be as familiar as one's parent's and grandparents, but I think the N is correct?
Looking forward to seeing you tomorrow!

I am going to be at the doctor's today --- but, as he is in Mylapore, I very much hope to attend a concert afterwards. TVS will be performing within walking distance of the surgery*, or Ayer Brothers (who I have not heard, but met at J-&-J's concert) will be at RS Hall.
*EDIT: I mean clinic. In UK we say "surgery" for a general doctor's place of practice. It seems, from an email from a kind friend, that what I said implied I might be having an operation. No, it is just a stubborn chest infection.

Dear Semmu, Bilahari, et al:
Please DO NOT post your reviews of concerts! I repeat, DO NOT post your reviews!
This way, we will get to read MKB sir's lovely anecdotes.
