Smt Vijayalakshmy Subramaniam – Vocal

Sri A.S.Krishnan – Morsing

The concert song list was -
• Slokam - Hiranmayim Lakshmim – Lalita –– Rupakam – M.Dikshitar - R, S
• Ora ju pu – Kannda Gowlai – Adi – Thyagaraja - S
• Parimala Ranganatham – Hamir Kalyani - Rupakam – M.Dikshitar - R

• RTP – Nalinakanthi – Khanda Rupakam
• Virutham – Edhayya Gathi – Chala Naatai – Koteeswara Iyer, Adi
• Thillana – Bindavan Saranga – Adi – Dr.M.Balamuralikrishna

The concert commenced with a brief alapana in Lalita and the slokam beginning with the words ‘Lakshmim Ksheera Samudra Raaja Tanayaam. . .’ followed by Hiranmayim Lakshmim. The artiste chose the words ‘Sadha Bhajami’ for kalpana swarams, employing striking Swaraksharams in the swara passages. A spritely ‘Ora ju pu jucheti nyayama’ came next, with swarams in the pallavi line. A beautiful and detailed Hamir Kalyani alapana was followed by the Dikshitar Composition – Parimala Ranganatham. The Swarams in Bhogeendra Sayeenam were rendered at the Pallavi phrase ‘Padmanabham’ and both this and Hiranmayim had interesting eduppus in the swarams. The main ragam chosen was Thodi and the Neraval and swarams were at the charanam phrase ‘Tambura Chekoni Gunalula. . . ‘.

Nalinakanthi after Thodi was a fantastic choice, and the RTP words were “Hanumathe Bhagavathe Namaste Sada Manasa”. A trikalam and neraval in the Pallavi was followed by brilliant Ragamalika swarams in Reetigowlai, Begada, Ranjani and Surati, with the last swaram being sung as a combination of all the ragams in reverse.

Following the RTP, a Virutham on Muruga was rendered in Shanmukhapriya , Bhagesri, Sindubhairavi, followed by a divine ‘Edayya Gathi’ in Chala Naatai. The concert concluded with the fast paced thillana in Brindavana Saranga.

Thanks for the review, HR. Is Smt. Vijayalakshmi done with her fellowship, or is she in India just for the season?
I can't resist this one:

A 'sprightly', as in brisk, lively and vivacious, or 'spritely' as in ethereal and supernatural, or bubbly as in the drink of the same name? :)

Smt. Vijayalakshmy garu went back to India after finishing the fellowship. She would however be back next fall to US, thanks to Sankritlaya (www.sankritlaya.org) for bringing her.
