Sanjay @ Vani Mahal (19.12.2010)

Sanjay for Sri TygabrahmaGanaSabha, Vani Mahal: 19.12.2010

Yesterday’s concert at Vani Mahal had it pouring ”Todi”. A complex RTP ( 4 Kalai Adi talam) occupied close to 2 hours of the 3 hour concert. An exquistite todi.. or a mighty todi as you’d prefer to call it. I could not help but marvel at the grandeur of the raga and the immense variations it allows. It has to be said that only an exceptionally talented artist such as Sanjay can execute such a master piece. This was followed by swara Kalpana in 28 ragas.. 1+27; each raga taking up one avartanam. The longest list of ragamalika swaras, I have heard. Some of them that I could identify were Bilahari, Kanada, hamsanandi, varali, sahana, Ranjani, Kapi, Hindolam, Saranga,Begada, Bhairavi?,valaji, shanmugapriya, Hamir Kalyani, ?, ?, hamsadwani, mayamalavagowlai, behag, bagesri, revathi, bowli, chalanattai, ?, ?, Sama; followed by a few pieces in Kamas

The song list for completeness
(1) Era Napai-Varnam-Adi
(2) Suryamurthe-Sowrastram-Dikshithar-druva talam?
(3) Enduku nirdaya-HariKambodhi-Tygaraja-Adi; neraval at three places?
(4) KandaVandarul-Aberi-Adi-Papanasam Sivan
(5) Eneramum undan –Devagandahari-Adi-GopalakrishnaBharathi
(6) RTP-Thodi-“nelatha marulu kontivu vanipai sadha nalla”; 4 kalai adi?
---------Swaras in 1+27 more ragas
(7) Un kadai Kan parvai-Kamas-?
(8) Matada baradamemo?-Kamas
(9) Tillana-tam tam tam- kamas-?-Patnam Subramaniyyar

P.S. There was something different about the raga elaboration of Aberi—Sanjay announced that this is also Aberi—can anyone clarify why

The thodi was indeed specatcular. 45 minutes for RT part alone and then the cascade of ragamalika swaras after the tani was just flowing like a torrential downpour (half avartana each?)

For the harikambodhi - he did nereval at the start of each caranam (or caranam line) and SV came to the fore in his replies. The wa SS & SV did the nereval was just brilliant.

I thought there were shades of Subramanyena Rakshitoham in the Abheri. Is that possible?

Have heard Sri Raja Rao earlier and in that instance he was all fury, but this one, it was all sowkyam. All in all, a good experience.

I wanted to come to this concert , felt very tired after our 5 hr meet, infact even bought a 100 Rs ticket. Shri TNS has once sung this 25 to 30 ragamaliga which I have heard. Nevertheless what must have been a deadly combination of sanjay-svaradarajan-srimushnam. I think ghatam artist is Trichy Murali who also must have played well .Srimushnam has extraordinary aesthetics and when the sound is in control he takes any crt as a very satisfying one.

WHAT A MISS !!! I had the choicest seat at Vani Mahal ( fourth row from the dais) and was enjoying the concert and was waiting for the TODI Tanam, when an unavoidable phone call hastened my exit. Had to leave due to some unavoidable situation.

Now looking at the 27 ragas pallavi, I am wondering whether something conspired against me yesterday. Me leaving a Sanjay concert is unacceptable ;(

Now after reading the post regarding RTP and the grandeur makes me even more disappointed. Hope I get compensated with other MASTER concerts !!!!!!

Sriram,
Sorry to hear about your missing the tOdi :(

Rajesh,
Some tODi it was. Another way to put it is to say--is there this much more to tODi? And more too when you come to think of it?
You would have been beat after the meeting. So, either you would have been too tired to appreciate it or,who knows, .It might have been a refreshing thing after a long day.

Bharathi,
Yes, the cascade of rAgamAikai svarams swept the listeners off their feet and if I'm not mistaken, also included nalina kAnti and suruTTi? Anyway, quick wave after wave of rAgams makes it difficult for us to recall them all.
Yes, Varadarajan, following like lakshmaN, played his part with grace and vigor. Speaking of grace, SrimushNam's playing brimmed with it and his mrudangam 'sang' along with sowkyam (Noise? Not a trace of it!). GhaTam Murali was very good too.

A note to VK whose stay is very short in Chennai: While the Bharat Kalachar concert you went to was very good, Varadarajan's playing in this concert along with Srimushnam would have made you even happier!

Arasi ---> Who is Sriram ?

BTW it must be mentioned about Srimushnam's playing yesterday. Excellent. His playing for the Abheri song along with reproducing some of Sanjay's brigas was a real treat. Srimushnam was in his elements to a large extent due to Sanjay's excellence. He was so intensely absorbed in Sanjay's singing.

The old cutcheri paddathi of singing the RTP in the same ragam as the opening varnam was adhered to in this cutchery.

"There was something different about the raga elaboration of Aberi" PS's Kandha vandharul is generally sung with D1 rather than D2, I suppose.
Here is the list of ragamalikai swaras: Bilahari, Kanada, Hamsanandhi, Varali, Sahana, Ranjani, Kapi, Hindolam, Hamirkalyani, Begada, Anandhabhairavi, Valaji, Simhendramadhyamam, Saranga, Janaranjani, Arabhi, Hamsadwani, Mayamalavagowlai, Behag, Bagesri, Revathi, Bouli, Chalanatai, Nalinakanthi, Bahudari and Surati
"The old cutcheri paddathi of singing the RTP in the same ragam as the opening varnam was adhered to in this cutchery"- Also in KGS (Hamsadwani)

If someone can deconstruct the final kOrvai that Sanjay sang, that will be useful.
