Sikkil Gurucharan
Mannargudi Easwaran
Mysore Nagaraj
H Sivaramakrishnan-Ghatam.
When I entered the Hall, he was singing
1) ..Raga-Kannada Gowla-sogasu jUDa taramA nI-Thyagarajar
neraval in 'amarArcita pada yugamu' and swaram.
2) Gnana Sabayil-Saranga-Papanasam Sivan
3) Marukelara-Jayantasri-Thyagarajar
4) Main-Harikambodhi-followed by "Dasani todi deve oh manasa"
Neralval in "Pathithule broche pattathi karini" & swaram-Thyagaraja
5) Tani
6) "Sarajisanabha sodari shankari"-Nagagandhari-Dikshitar
7) RTP-Pantuvarali-Pallavi "Nannu Brova radha Sri Ramachandra" followed in
Brindavana Saranga, Naganandhini, Begada.
8) Kapi maduripuna-Ashtapadhi-Kapi-Jayadevar.
9) One Bharatiyar song-Ragamaliga.
10) Mangalam.
A different concert in the sense- Harikambodhi as a main was the least heard. And the
kriti too. Brilliant rendering by SGC. Fast paced pallavi and the return in mridhangam
were absolutely amazing.
Gnana Sabayil- The anupallavi goes like this.. "..madhiyum nadiyum tavazh". He rendered
as "...madhiyum nagaiyum kaaNbom". I don't know where he took these words ?!
Pantuvarali, as RTP, was also new. Again he stamped his vidwat in his rendition.
Special mention to Mysore Nagaraj. His violin retrun and intricate rhythms/sound of violin
beautifully played. I could not stop recollecting S.Balachander's Veena and his vidwat
in playing. The previous day, SKC performed with Mys Nagaraj and UKS in Petachi Auditorium.
I missed it.
Tani was always wonderful when Easwan is there.
Ashtabadhi- I don't understand why the artists sings in different ragas when it was
tuned by Jayadeva in a specific raga. (the original raga of Kapi maduripuna is saranga) ?
Only once I heard Shri SSI singing Ashtabhadhi in the same raga "Chandana charchita"
in pantuvarali.
Disclaimer-He did not sing 3 T kritis because of me (seeing me in the second row)...

I am not aware of the ashTapadi's being tuned by Sri jayadEva - even if he had, he would have probably used the rAgas that were indigent to Orissa (heard probably in oDissi performances for the most part these days - I heard that the most well known of the practioners of original oriyan classical music, Sri Raghunath Panigrahi tried to petition the SNA to declare their music a third stream of classical music, to exist with the currently accepted carnATic and hindustAni styles). All of the ashTapadis we hear on the concert platform are the result of 'modern' retuning, as far as I can tell - so why not as a rAgamAlika?
