S.Sowmya @ MA,21/12/10
Sowmya sang an extraordinary Saveri and surprisingly YAro ivar yAro of Arunachala kavi was sung.I should say this song sounds better in sAveri or is it due to the Sowmya magic ?
Earlier she sang an erudite KalyAni - amma rAvamma with N,S.
VaranArada in Vijayashree was sung with swarams in lightning speed. My memory went back to 1985 Dec where Dr.S.Ramanathan sang this in MA.(he was conferred Sangita kalAnidhi that year).Dr.Narmada matched SS in her replies.
The RTP was in SAramati.
The team of accompaniments Dr.Narmada,J.Vaidhyanathan and Sree Sundarkumar provided excellent support.

I thought 'Yaro Ivar Yaro’ composition is in Raga Bhairavi. Did she sing this in Saveri for a variety

Yaro Ivar Yaro is sung in Saveri by Smt R Vedavalli (and I guess, her students too). Also, TNS sings it in Saveri, and so do his disciples. Have heard TNS say in a concert that the first version was apparently in Saveri and it was retuned in Bhairavi later..

Re: S.Sowmya @ MA,21/12/10
Sri AK did not tune his compositions, he was a poet - a couple of his students (who studied tamizh literature with him) who learnt music from Sri MD were the ones that tuned them. I think it was Sri ARI who re-tuned many of the commonly sung kRtis from the rAmanATakam. Sri KVN, Smt. MSS and Smt. DKP all sang yArO ivar yArO in bhairavi.Sathej wrote: first version was apparently in Saveri and it was retuned in Bhairavi later..

Re: S.Sowmya @ MA,21/12/10
I have a CD in which Smt Vedavalli sings Yaaro Ivar Yaaro in saveri and announced that the orignial tune was Saveri and later ARI tuned it in bhairavi. Both versions are nice but I personally prefer the Bhariavi one (probably because I have heard it being elaborated extensively by MMI, DKP).
I was there for the concert. The Saramati tanam was quite good. Since I dont know anything technical abt carnatic music nor I'm a regular concert listener, so I'm only able to appreciate things as a layman (or not able to appreciate anything sometimes). I found some kind of hindolam shade in Sowmya's singing of Saramati.
One question to people who attended the concert. At some parts of the concert I felt that Dr.Narmada's gamakams were kind of abnormal (the osciallation seemed too much for a gamakam). Also, at some places, when she had to ascent from a lower note to a higher note in a single bow and use a single finger on the same string for the ascent (i dont know whats that called, is that a jaaru?), something dint seem normal. Was there something I dint get?

And the great late MS also sang it in Bhairavi. I should hear saveri and perhaps save my opinion.

Well, she's a faithful follower of the Parur technique...One question to people who attended the concert. The Behag no.was brilliant with Sowmya unleashing HM like phrases one by one and Dr.Narmada returning them with gaiety.Narmada's bowing produced sounds like a sArangi at places here reminding me of havEli sangeet.I felt like sitting in a rajasthAn palace.

Re: S.Sowmya @ MA,21/12/10
That was a neat and compact presentation by Sowmya.
The Pallavi sahitya was simply beautiful.
The superfast swara rendering for Vijayasree however saw the singer failing to define the highly elusive Gandhaara note.
In the kalyani kriti (amma ravamma), the niraval at Taamarasa dala netru did remind one of that longstandng 'lingustic' debate in music sahitya circles as to whether it must be 'netru' or 'netri'.
The javali suggested that the singer does maintain respect for tradition.

I don't think its necessary as they are all already reading it regularly! Even someone with little telugu knowledge would have easily grasped what VGVji is trying to emphasize.Sivaramakrishnan wrote:In the kalyani kriti (amma ravamma), the niraval at Taamarasa dala netru did remind one of that longstandng 'lingustic' debate in music sahitya circles as to whether it must be 'netru' or 'netri'.

* Her saramathi RTP was scholarly.Every year she is innovative in RTP @ MA.(Various Gowlais &the like). Tala was also simple giving more scope to enjoy RTP. This year she has presented a Lecdem on Ghanta &allied ragas in MA this morning.
*with not much heard kritis in this Raga she exhaustively dealt with this Janya of Natabhairavi with ease &poise.Good kalapramanam throughout esp Yara ivar yaro (with saveri version also in vogue I feel Bhairavi version is more soothing& familiar.)
*Narmada was not pleasing on that day.Shall I call it harsh bow?

Yes. If I remember correctly she sang a nArAyaNagouLa RTP (with svarAs in a all known gouLa types) and a khAraharapriyA RTP (with svarAs in all the rAgas with the same position as kharaharapriyA in each chakram) at MA in 2001 and 2002 respectively. Both were not only enjoyable but also scholarly.satyabalu wrote:* Every year she is innovative in RTP @ MA.(Various Gowlais &the like).
