sublime music

There are two places where I hope to describe the MMI CENTENARY efforts I am involved with. 1) The Rasikas meet on dec 19th. 2) The MMI Rememberance day celebrations on JAN 9TH- 5 TO 9:30 p.m.- at Raga Sudha Hall. The article had said Jan 1 but these are the two correct dates. In addition to MMI we are hoping to celebrate PMI'S Centenary celebrations also. I am eager to hear about other efforts as well as suggestions from others. VKVPratyaksham Bala wrote:'With Madurai Mani on a Rainy Evening' by Charukesi in The Hindu, 12 November 2010:-
... ... The centenary celebration of MMI begins with an inaugural concert on January 1 at the Ragasudha Hall, Chennai, when the ardent admirer of MMI, V.K. Viswanathan of the U.S. who had organised the event, will be present and details of the centenary celebrations beginning from October 25, 2011 will be chalked out then.

Its fascinating to read the accounts of these bygone years of the life of this great artist, especially when you were young and told to look on this person and his music as a true 'Gandhian' when you first beheld him, or you clung on to his few 78 rpms that you possessed then! Anyway, a request to all the great Rasikas here who point us to downloads, could you also please mention the accompanying Vidwans to some of us who are not skilled into the discernment? Also, the occasion, year of the concert etc.
I am deeply moved reading this incident. Truly a fortunate soul.venkatakailasam wrote:One more of MMI's greats:
Mani Iyer was a great devotee of Maha Periava who treated Mani Iyer like his own child. Mani Iyer saw Sri Periavaal as Sri Kapaaleswarar, Sri Parameswara himself .
Once Mani Iyer was singing in His presence after he had lost his eyesight . While singing he heard someone accompanying him with beautiful rhythm. After completing the song, he wanted to know from vembu Iyer as to who was accompanying him with such a beautiful rhythm. Immediately Sri Maha periava intervened and told Mani Iyer that it was he with a peel of orange in his hand like kanjira. "Naan taan appaaa taalam potadhu!", Suddenly Mani Iyer broke down with tears and cried "Appane Kapaaleeswara!, parameswaraa! "yen" Periavaala thaalam potadhu?" He cried and told "En periavaalai paaka mudiyalaye, enge irukkaa" Periyavaal in his voice filled with kaarunyam replied "ido un pakkathileye irukkenappa" Mani Iyer repeatedly told "Appane Kapaaleswaraaa! Parameswaraa!" and prostrated. Periavaal blessed him with his own benign smile like a mother to her child.( Free translation)

I keep hearing this often that mmi sang when Kanchi mahaswami visited his home. Does any one know what MMI sang before kanchi mahaswami?

In one of the Sangeetha Sammelan concert , MMI was just completing the neraval for Kaana Kann Koti at a leisurely pace and he was suddenly reminded by Sri Vembu Iyer that there was hardly 5 minutes remaining for the concert to come to a close . My God ! ,MMI suddenly took off like a rocket and finished in a single bout a long sequence of swaras unimaginable for others and finished the concert after concluding with Veyuru Tholi Pangan
