The birthday bash at Thiruvanmiyur on 30th Oct - Saturday of MMI went off with great fanfare and enthusiasm. The function was arranged at the residence of Sri Kuppusamy , nephew of the composer SRI GUHAN who had composed "Kandan Karunai " sung by MMI in all his concerts.
Sri Venugopal , son of the famous writer of 1940s and a very close associate of MMI, Sri Chitti Sundararajan , made the arrangements helped by Sri Yessel who took the responsibility of playing the recordings of MMI.
The function started with snacks and tea . After a routine introductions , elderly associates of MMI were honoured . Sri Vishnuprasad then gave a very graphic description of how he became a technical expert without any formal grounding in the field of Carnatic Music merely by listening to MMI from childhood! He became an expert mirudangist and managed the miudangam school established by Sri Kumbakonam Rajappa for sometime. He had given many vocal concerts also . He has now come to the level of writing notations to any music. All these became possible only by listening to MMI recordings only. As Srimati DKP once remarked in a doordarshan interview recently as an advise to budding artists " Please do listen to MMI's recordings only till you become techically sound for platform concerts"
Then an AIR recording of MMI of 1956 with Thiruvalangadu Sundaresa Iyer on the violin was played by Yessel . It started with Tatvamariya , then an elaborate Vallabha Nayakasya and a scintillating Kamalambam Bhajare in Kalyani . the 1950 AIR National recording of MMI , an RTP in Shanmugapriya - "Mahatma Mani Mozhi "composed by Chitti was played and the funcion ended well .

I seem to have distinct recollection that MMI's RTP --- Mahatma Mani Mozhi vazhi nadappom was first broadcast in an AIR Madras concert programme (about an hour's duration) on Gandhiji 's birthday on October2 morning time somewhere around 1960 or so because we did record this radio concert in a reel taperecorder then. The RTP was followed by a Tamil song on Gandhiji in the ragamalika ragas Mohanam and Madhyamavati.

Actually the first time MMI sang this magnificient piece was in Pazhani. The lines of the Pallavi is part of a great piece Chiiti Sundararajan composed specially for him at his request. MMI was so saddened by Gandhiji's assasination he cancelled all his concerts for a month. He resumed his concerts after a month & sang Chiiti's magnificient composition as the main piece as a tribute to Gandhiji- many may know he was a true Gandhian in EVERY respect-; It became VERY VERY POPULAR as anything he touched & MMI rendered it a lot& its a PITY I have been unable to get a copy of the whole rendering after 50 years of searching!.....Its similar to "Paa Malaiku Inai yundoh" which I searched& found after 25 years- Papanasam Sivan's tribute to Bharathiyar which I believe is the HIGH LIGHT of my Carnatic Music listening experirnce of more than 50 years( With MSG& PMI EXCELLING EVEN themselves!-Totally out of this world).........VKV

True VKV Sir , Paamalaikinai Undo is a soul stirring rendering by MMI . " I am incompetent to judge his rendering" . This remark was made by SRI MDR Sir to my question on some other song while sitting by his side during MMI's last public Concert . My grandfather used to say in those days that nobody ventured to sing " Paamalai kku" after the famouse NCV cut a gramaphone record of this song and it was broken by MMI.

There are two places where I hope to describe the MMI CENTENARY efforts I am involved with. 1) The Rasikas meet on dec 19th. 2) The MMI Rememberance day celebrations on JAN 9TH- 5 TO 9:30 p.m.- at Raga Sudha Hall. The article had said Jan 1 but these are the two correct dates. In addition to MMI we are hoping to celebrate PMI'S Centenary celebrations also. Futher to the above Mayuram Govindaraja Pillai accompanied MMI superbly again for the Abhogi piece -Sabapathikku in Tamil isai sangam. It was Chowdiah's turn to brilliantly team with Palani during MMI's memorable Manasunilpa in Abhogi at AIR SangeetSammelan in 1961!

The composition " Thiruvadi Charanam" was made popular by Sri Musiri Subramanya Iyer .I have heard elders say that Sri Musiri and Semmangudi Mama were together in a concert in Tamilisai Sangam featuring MMI . On seeing Musiri MMI suddenly started singing Thiruvadi Charanam and after the song was over Sri Musiri was commenting " Seenu ! we have to stop singing Thiruvadi Charanam hereafter as Mani has taken it up" !
I have eleven different versions of it by MMI alone and I sent them in a CD to Sruti Magazine when somebody expressed that MM sang only Kana Kann Kodi in tamil in Khamboji . this happened years before and I have to dismiss another false notion that he specialised in Khamboji and actually he sang more Sankarabaranam than Khamboji !

Dear Balu Sir,

I had read an article along these lines by one Ramakrishnan, if I am not wrong, in which he says MMI has not sung Begada ragam at all. It doesnt have his mail id, else I would have mailed him the Begada RTP and Anudinamu and made him understand what a bliss it is to listen to MMI singing RTP or Anudinamunu!

Dear Perarulalan,
Is not VALLABHA NAYAKASYA with which he starts the concerts many times . in Begada!
A very elaborate Begada raga , Kriti - Vallabha , and elaborate swaras were played at the MMI birtday function at Thiruvanmiyur . Besides an elaborate Thiagarajaya Namaste in Begada, Dikshitar composition , recorded on two different occasions are available with me ! My family people in those days used to comment MMI always sings Begada and why he was not taking other ragas.
These are in addition to Anudhinamulu And RTP - Begada!

Begada RTP is a 1950s recording (probably 1956-57) and the venue is also not known. It is surely not a Music academy concert going by the concert list of MA year by year.

The recording starts from the begada alapana with full RTP, pallavi line : "Lokavanachatura Maam paahi" in Aadhi thaalam, 2 kalai (1/2 idam)(includes scinitiliating raga malika swaras Sama, Kanada and Sindhubhairavi) followed by Ethanai vidangal thaan (Virutham, Mohanam, kapi, hamsanandhi)and thullu mada vetkai (thiruppugazh) in hamsanandhi.

The accompanists are : Shri Thiruvalangad Sundaresa Iyer, Shri T.K.Murthy and Shri Alangudi Ramachandran. There are many great moments in Begada alapana and thanam with many rounds of applauses from the audiences.

Mani Iyer was a great devotee of Maha Periava who treated Mani Iyer like his own child. Mani Iyer saw Sri Periavaal as Sri Kapaaleswarar, Sri Parameswara himself .
Once Mani Iyer was singing in His presence after he had lost his eyesight . While singing he heard someone accompanying him with beautiful rhythm. After completing the song, he wanted to know from vembu Iyer as to who was accompanying him with such a beautiful rhythm. Immediately Sri Maha periava intervened and told Mani Iyer that it was he with a peel of orange in his hand like kanjira. "Naan taan appaaa taalam potadhu!", Suddenly Mani Iyer broke down with tears and cried "Appane Kapaaleeswara!, parameswaraa! "yen" Periavaala thaalam potadhu?" He cried and told "En periavaalai paaka mudiyalaye, enge irukkaa" Periyavaal in his voice filled with kaarunyam replied "ido un pakkathileye irukkenappa" Mani Iyer repeatedly told "Appane Kapaaleswaraaa! Parameswaraa!" and prostrated. Periavaal blessed him with his own benign smile like a mother to her child.( Free translation)

But I have not come across any clip.

In today's hindu friday review (unfortunately the link is not available in online) mmi writeup by Chitti's son is excellent . I keep hearing this often that mmi sang when Kanchi mahaswami visited his home. Does any one know what MMI sang before kanchi mahaswami?

Once I had a talk with Srimushnam raja rao , he told me in one kalyAna kutcheri he played half a concert for shri mmi , he is looking for that too, possibly you may add that in your treasure hunt. He said he remembers vaguely that recording was perhaps done but srimushnam sir was too young then.

Dear Rajesh ,
I was fortunate enough to attend some 50 concerts of MMI live and MC had not accompanied him in any of those concerts. Even Sri Sethuramiah had accompanied him at Rama Rao Kala Mandap after a long gap due to illness . We were all waiting for Mayuram Govindaraja Pillay .
from 6pm to 7.30pm and finally Sri Sethuramiah , in the audience , got up , brought his violin and accompanied MMI on that day!

There is a 6 minute bliss, Ka Vaa Vaa of Sri MMI, where he has sung high speed swarams and awesome violin return. It just shows how one can bring sowkhyam even when the song is rendered at high speed. Even at that speed, MMI can make Lord Muruga stop and listen to him.
OTOH, it just makes me wonder the effect of vara nArada song that current day artistes render as a filler between main and RTP. Even before nAradar plans to come down, the song would have got over!!

My God ! ,MMI suddenly took off like a rocket and finished in a single bout a long sequence of swaras unimaginable for others and finished the concert after concluding with Veyuru Tholi Pangan

That particular recording was actually available with my father in spool tape
It was taken away by Yazhpanam Dakshinamurthy Pillai and he promised to return it as soon as he comes back from SriLanka . Unfortunately he passed away after somedays and the tape could not be traced ! But I have several other recordings and if you have a gmail address I can send them to you through my mailing ID balummi@gmail.com .

Dear All,

me and my son are big fans of MMI. We are eagelry awaiting the january celebration. Further is there any thought on MMI centenary concert special? Like the one for GNB. I would like to be a volunteer (my knowledge of music is extremely limited). Here I would like to thank Sri Balummi who spared his time and effort to present me (through my brother Balaji of egmore) with a huge collection of MMI cds running to more than 300 hours of concert recordings.....

Shri MMI was humorous too. Once when a person remarked that he has composed a song in begada without any of the popular begada phrases that the contemporary artistes sing and wanted to showcase that. Shri MMI after listening to that said "I agree this does not have any popular phrase of begada but also does not have a shade of begada"......Correct..idhala Begada voda prabalamana sangathi varala ..ana begadavum varaliye....

Also his Kapi is exexmplary....I have (courtesy Balummi) atleast 22 recordings in Kaapi (intha Sowkya) and every one is unique ....only MMI can do this.....And there is a very short burst of Sindhu Bhairavi ( in a virutham) ....I have not heard any such phrases from anybody and it was just bliss....amazing...

My greatest disappointment in life is not having a video of this great master.....I have been trying to get one but to no avail...... With much difficulty i got one of Shri MDR (i am fan of him)

Balummi Sir..do you know if any video is available? Also Sir has MMI sung any sruti bedhams?

I am surprised to get your views in these columns! Ihad given all my collections of MMI to Balaji and he wanted them not only for himself but also his brother and his uncle Sri O.S. Arun . This happened more than an year ago . He said you are in Kodambakkam . As for sruti bedham , Vivadhi swaram etc. MMI was not interested in them as they they did not go to enhance the beauty of music. They only go to show your knowledge and capacity to exhibit which he did not want. and these are only my views and not his . He never even expressed them as that would amout to a little bit of Ahankaram ( EGO ) . He always concludes his concerts with " Ethanai Vidhangalthan Karpinum Ketpinum YAN ennum aganthaithan ( EGO) Ellalavum ( even a little bit) Kurayavillai ( not reduced) and this attitude of him made Sri Mahaswamigal visit his house frequently while staying in Sanskrit College ,Mylapore I guess!

I am happy to confirm the Details of the annual MMI REMEMBRANCE DAY for this season.

1) It will be held on January 9th(Sunday) at Raga Sudha Hall, Mylapore 5 P.M. to 9:30 P.M.
2) Time Break down& details:
A) 5 TO 5:40 P.M.------Invocation sung by MMI himself (Solo)----Suryamurthae, Introduction by VKV, PLAYING OF: Janakiramana, Vinatasuthavahana,& Vasudevayani from his concerts followed by:
B) 5: 40 P.M. TO 7:15 P.M. Analysis of MMI's Raga rendering techniques& patterns by Sri. Uday Shankar. In addition to being an expert musician & an expert in both classical Western & Carnatic Music himself, he has spent several years analysing& researching this topic, Observations of Sri. Trissur Ramachandran on a Non-Nadaswara Bhani approach to rendering of certain compositions by MMI as well other observations, a Lec-Dem type presentation by Dr. N. Narmada on "Janaranjakam" aspects of MMI's Music, & Summation of the views expresssed by the panelists by Dr. S.A.K.Durga along with her own views.
C) 7:15 to 9:15 P.M. Vocal Concert by Smt. Vidya Kalyanaraman acoompanied by: Dr.Narmada(Violin), Sri.Vellore Ramabadran(Mridhangam). Sri. Vichu Subrahmanyam, Disciple of Sri.Vellore Ramabhadran will assist him on the Mridangam in this concert.

Nice write up , this particular para,"He felt that in some places the syllable aa was not as sweet as la." As I read this line I remembered mmi's hindOlam(la la la) that ends with sAmajavaragamanA. Perhaps really la la la adds more Ah Ah Ah

In Tamil musical terminology, there is a word 'izhaidal'. I cannot explain this word. But at the end of the kriti, please listen to the violinist -that is 'izhaidal' (The dictionary defines the term by an example - copulation of snakes). Who is the violinist?

Vgovindan Thanks for a nice recording-- the violinist is Lalgudi--I am quite sure--in those days Lalgudi was the ONLY violinist whose accompanying style was tethered to the vocalist-- in this case there is no Nadaswaram (a la TNR) flourish--just the "glide" in synch with MMI .you would notice if you compare the Poorvikalyani that he plays for GNB with this you would note the difference!!
