Sanjay at Margazhi Maha Utsavam (JAYA-TV) 11-DEC-2010
A blow-out concert !!! A true masterclass from the MASTER !
Vocal: Sanjay Subrahmanyan
Violin: S Varadarajan
Mridangam: Neyveli Venkatesh
Ghatam: Tirupanitura Radhakrishnan
Venue: Chettinad Vidyashram - 2hr concert
Topic: ‘Bharathi Moovar’ – Remembers Kavikunjara Bharathi, Mazhavai Chidambara Bharathi & Suddhananda Bharathi
Song List:
1. Siddhi vinayakane - Kalavati - Adi (KKB)
2. Poomel valarum - Anandabhairavi - Adi (MCB)
3. Ullam urugi urugi - Kanakangi - Rupakam (SB)
4. Karunai thanthennai - Begada - M Chapu (MCB)
5. Deivam undendru - Kalyani - Adi (KKB)
6. Ivanaro - Kambhoji - M Chapu (KKB)
7. Vazhiya bharatham - Viruttham - Ragamalika (SB)
8. Enthaai vaazhgenum - Patdeep - Adi (SB)
A spell binding concert which had many stunning moments.
Key Highlights:
1. Anandha Bhairavi song, lyrical beauty and the swarams
2. MASTER and Begada...nothing more to say - "BOSS of BEGAGA" !
3. After the Begada came the powerful Kalyani
4. "Ivanaro.." which came in bcoz the organizers were not ready with the Q&A session turned out to be absolute delight. HOPE TO HEAR THIS SONG MORE OFTEN
5. The viruttam was new and received an spontaneous applause when the lyrics refered to our motherland.
What differentiates the MASTER is the freshness in concept (each year), the sincerity, the dedication and presentation - SANJAY is the MASTER and stays perched above. A real BLESSING to listen to his music - year after year !!!!
For me the 2004 concert on the topic TILLAI is a once in a lifetime concert. This turned out to be very close to the TILLAI concert of 2004 !
Amazing concert. Cannot wait to watch it on JAYA-TV !!!!

Something, call it a sixth sense if you like, tells me that srdirect likes the music of Sanjay Subrahmanyan. He is so understated in his choice of words that one has to read between the lines to arrive at the conclusion that "here is a true fan". Mind you, frequent use of the term 'Master' and overexcitedly gagging on other words - Begada becomes Begaga - clearly indicate that our scribe has gone (be)gaga over his muse.
I think I'll dispense with the irony. It's great to know that one of the top draws of the season is in truly mid season form, as Wodehouse might have put it. It's always good to have your leading players middling the ball right from the get go. That way, the momentum can be built up gradually, get into cruise control, and explode brilliantly in the slog overs.
A final word for srdirect. Please don't hold yourself back in your posts. Your 'over the top' style is infectious, and gives us an unbridled sense of how much you enjoy Sanjay's music, just as your lyrical photographs do. You are not the only one. A bit of proof reading before pressing the 'submit' key, might help though !

You have a very basic version of sixth sense
My first sense was enough to tell me that .
My second sense tells me that sridirect is a bigger fan than srisub 11..
Agreed . SS has a very infectious style .

Yes, I agree it was a beautiful concert. The acoustics in the balcony was awful, though. Would love to hear all the songs again in the season this year. The last viruttam was spectacular. A nice account of the authors-- "Bharathi moovar" has been put up by Sanjay in his blog.

TO - mankuthimma - It is sirsub11 and not srisub 11 (as indicated in your post
Since sirsub11 talked about proof reading before the posting I am indicating this.
Agreed I am a maverick fan of Sanjay (Ok....will call him Sanjay for once !). He does not carry truck load of papers strewn all around on the dias (as some leading singers do), does justice to a thematic concert with neraval, swarams (and does not treat it as light classical) and as a bonus add-on has a quirky style of answering questions straight from the heart and not give "so-called nice, diplomatically correct, ideal answers" !

Just saw the youtube video thanks to VKailasam and Carnaticopia.
The song Karunai thanthennai alamma (Mazhavai Chidambara bharathi) is set to the same tune (literally) as Ramaswamy Sivan's Kadaikkan veithennai alamma.
Sanjay's blog claims that the latter was copied from MCB's version. I am not sure about the timeline of these compositions. Could someone shed some light on this?

thanks, Lji. Do you know if Sivan was particularly inspired by MCB to compose a song almost identical to his earlier composition?

Sorry I don't know.
In modern times, one of the well known living vaggeyakara has composed a varNa almost identical to one by Vinai Kuppier.
Papanasham Shivan was inspired by some of Tyagaraja's songs to compose songs with the same tunes.
