Budding Artists of 2010 / Evolved Junior Artists in 2010

Post by VISHNURAMPRASAD »

I could not go to many concerts this season owing to work and personal circumstances. I managed to peep into Mylapore fine arts a couple of times during noon times both for lunch as well as music :D . My office is close to Mylapore (luckily).

I had the oppurtunity to listen to the artists who performed between 12 to 1.30 slot and 1.30 to 3 slot. I used to spend atleast 90 minutes between these time slots which gave me a fair idea about how the artistes of both slots perform. I have been doing this for more than 4 years now and find that there is a lot of improvement year by year on selection of artistes.

Though i do not remember the names, this year I heard rare peaces like Anname (Varnam), a pada varnam in Nattaikurinji, a grand surutti alapana followed by Geetharthamu, a good delineation of Nayaki followed by Ranganayakam. And krithis like Paralokha bhaya (Mandari), Deva Deva(poorvi kalyani) etc which were sung very well. But it was mostly female artistes who faired better than the male ones.

The common unchanged scene that i have been noticing in the last 4 years in MFAC is the crowd at lunch hall is much bigger than the handful or dozens listening inside the concert hall :)

Can somebody list out the names and profiles of some Budding artistes of 2010 and also the Junior ones who could move up the ladder with more chances and recognitions from the institutions?

In our concert review section i could see only the repeated reviews of TNS, Vijay Siva, Sanjay, Ranjani Gayathri, and the other popular Gayathris :) Am sure our forum members are far versatile and open to listen to several new artistes, but somehow not getting to see the posts on youngsters. :o

Thanks Suresh for pointing out the reviews. I was looking to see the reviews of more such artistes :D I have seen Kuldeep Pai and Dharini getting good reviews from the Newspapers.

Also this year many of the subsenior artistes have made it to the top slot. But I feel our Suryaprakash who deserves such seniority has not been recognised even this year. I am sure he is one artist who can prove is mettle at the top slot. He has got a vast reportoire, experienced for more than 2 decades, competent enough to sing complex pallavis, rare ragas etc. etc. we should remember that he is not forgotten by the sabhas unlike many others who started around the same time and faded away, only that he is not given the senior slot, this denotes that there is something beyond competency that is required for such recognition :?:

thanks Srikant1987. Very interesting review by Gamakam :).

Am preparing a list of such notable artistes and try to get some more details about them to bring out a small report on such new stars. Am also interested in knowing all your thoughts about those subseniors promoted into seniors (like sikkil gurucharan, k.gayathri and few others) and also your thoughts about vidwans like Suryaprakash who could not get the top slot after 20 years of service.

Yeah, true, its always the known names that are repeatedly reviewed.

I recently went to Shobha Sriram's concert at NCA and KFA. Her alapanas were a class apart. She had a majestic interpolation of nadaswara bani esp in the upper octave in alapanas, weaving unusual patterns using different intervals of swaras in aarohana and avarohana and the cherry on top, the spriteful brigas to embellish the whole thing. When she sang slow moving kritis, she polished and presented the sangathis at every step taking the listener to a higher plane. After a main piece, a couple of bhajans/abhangs were sung exploiting fully her vocal range spanning three octaves.

But, true, not a thing was written in the papers. Looks like she is the student of Smt Suguna Varadachari. She had also learnt from Manda Sudharani, it seems.

Thanks ramamantra, this is what exactly I wanted to discuss about. Shoba Sriram, has no reviews any where as far as I could search. But going by your views, she is definetely an artist to be watched and encouraged. I feel this is how we can contribute something back as a rasika. This was discussed at length at our rasikas meet. The topic was "is our forum artist friendly? If not how to make it artist friendly?" Radha Baskar/ M.Narmada also agreed to the point that our forum can both be rasika and artist friendly one!

Any more such names? Even names would suffice, we will do some search and Radha Bhaskar can also provide more info on such artistes from her database.

Moreover these budding artistes will not mind us recording there music. We can also have some audio snippets posted here so that fellow rasikas can also give their suggestions and comments to improve the artiste's musical outlook. I hope our moderators and admin will have no objections to this.

Is Amrutha Venkatesh is the same as Amritha Murali who used to sing and play the violin? I got a chance to listen to Bhairavi and Malavi (sisters) yesterday at MFAC (1.30 to 3.00 pm slot).

After a long time i could listen to one of the best Alapanas of Ananda bhairavi (well played by the violinist Rahul too!) followed by O Jegadamba (rendered very well emphasizing the lyrical beauty of the krithi and also the bhakti element). They did neraval in "Anni bhuvambulugaache suprasannamoorthi annapoorna varadhaa!" A commendable attempt that reminded of a great rendition by MDR with neraval in "varasithagirinilayuni priyapranayinee parashakthi manavini vinumaa!". They also sang swaras comfortably with perfect raga bhavam both in the slow and medium tempo.

Can somebody give more information about the main artistes (Bhairavi and Malavi), they were looking like having considerable concert experience as well. Are they from Chennai?

No, no. Amritha is somewhat older and also more my favourite. ;)

Amrutha doesn't play violin afaik.

Amritha Murali sings at 1 45 pm at Music Academy today.

Vishnuramprasad, Bhairavi and Malavi are students of KR Kedaranathan. Malavi was a contestant/finalist in last year's carnatic idol. I think they might also get some training from Suguna Varadachari. I believe they are based in Chennai.

And yes, Amritha Murali is a very talented violinist/vocalist. Also student of Kedaranathan (& T. Rukmini/Vittal Ramamurthy violin).

Thank you Mahavishnu. It was great meeting you at the rasikas meet. I could sense a semmangudi influence in their alapana though they sang the krithi and neraval in a different style. The main part is they enjoyed their singing!

Vishnuramprasad: It was a pleasure to meet you too! I enjoyed your reading of the citation with your chaste tamil diction.

I think the neraval difference might be due to the influence of the Musiri school. However, it is very hard to parse the specific influence of lineage on one's music nowadays due to the exposure to recorded music, internet etc.

There are some some very good junior accompanists that I spotted this season. NC Bharadwaj and Praveen Kumar are excellent budding mridangam artistes. Parur Ananthakrishnan (violin) also shows great promise, he will mature as he accompanies good artistes. He was overdoing things a bit when he played with Bharat Sundar.

There is a lady called K Jyotsna. Is she singing in any season slot?

Not to be confused with the violinist from London, who I hope to see tomorrow.

Vishnuramprasad, I had meant to thank you for reading the citation; sorry, I am a bit late in acknowledging it.
'Thank you' . ;)

Punarvasu,
I was just a mouth piece of your wonderful citation. I had the privilege of designing the text and frame it like a vaazthu madal for the well deserving soul!.

coming back to the subject of discussion, mahavishnu... yes it is getting difficult to find the school of the upcoming singers, all of them have influences of various schools. I am still looking around for an young artiste with a unique but acceptable bani. For the violin and mridangam youngsters, we can still find the style of their gurus. I heard a pazhani style nadai for a desadhi taala krithi from a youngster and felt really happy to see someone follow the great style. Similarly I could identify lalgudi, parur, MC and TNK styles in the young vidwans.
