AnDOlika is such a rare ragam these days, and it was nice to listen to GNB's varNam. I thought PP sang a great sketch for this ragam. The swaras to the charaNam were crisp. I liked PP's latAngi ragam - she used phrases SNNS - SNNR, very effectively in the upper octave. PP combines classicism with a fair bit of aesthetic adventure - her use of the plain madhyamam was beautiful in the closing stages of the alapanai. I have never heard marivErE without a neraval at daralOla nI sATi, and I was disappointed PP skipped the neraval here. She sang swaras to the pallavi that had very good poruttam. The pallavi starts at the shadjam and descends, and PP introduced some nice symmetry by continually ending with swaras ascending to the shadjam. In addition, the finish with DNR, (eDuppu: shadjam) was evocative. The repeating use of the madhyamam at PDM,MMMM, was surprising and aesthetic. The latAngi was very nice. I was a bit disappointed with shudda dhanyAsi - not one of my favourite ragas. PP's alapanai was nice (as nice as I'll ever perceive this ragam), and I was surprised by a neraval at kanagasaila viharEna. The neraval's mEl kAla passages were nice, and the kalpanaswaras were also good.

The highlight of the concert was the excellent rendition of jAnaki ramaNa with kalpanaswaras at the madhyama kala line of raktha naLina. The kalpanaswaras here were amazing and the poruttam was again highly impressive. PP's kIravANi was quite nice (third kIravANi main for me, so...), but the conclusion descending into the mandra stAyi was quite special. The krithi was quite beautiful, but I would've preferred good ol' kaligiyunTE. While the neraval was nice, I enjoyed the kalpanaswaras more, and the conclusion centered about PDP was particularly lovely. PP's pAdAravindamE (hindOLavasantam) is always special - when I first heard it from her at her San Diego concert, I was moved considerably. What a beautiful composition - and what a great singer to be able to do justice to it!

PP was struggling a fair bit during the kApi rAgam, which was vague. However, she sang the jAvaLi very beautifully. The concert ended with a really lovely kinkiNi nAdam. I've never heard this krithi before, and it's nice to know the composer. Have we discussed it in Sahitya? If R. Vedavalli's bhairavi has been the best opening in a concert this season, PP's kinkiNi nAdam would certainly qualify as the best closing item.

PP's voice has seen better days. I felt she did frequently struggle with her shruti. In spite of that, she delivered a concert filled with classicism. Her voice has a lot of depth, and her music has so much bhAvam. Her manOdharma sizzled in jAnaki ramaNa. What a vidushi! Some of my friends have questioned my decision to dedicate this season to listening to the senior vidwans and vidushis. So far, they have provided the best music by quite a distance.

Akkarai Subhalakshmi was fairly good on the violin. I felt her raga responses this morning were too long. When PP is singing, the violinist does not need to develop ragas from scratch. PP has razor sharp accuracy in sussing out and delivering the essence of the ragas. I also felt AS was not very sensitive to nuances in PP's singing. For instance, in shudda dhanyAsi, PP would end phrases in the alapanai with elegant vibrato in the nishAdam. AS would repeat these as more extensive oscillations. She seemed to be playing for what she thought should be sung and not what was actually being sung. However, AS's raga essays were neat and she also gave good responses in neravals and kalpanaswaras. I feel she should use the mandra stAyi more when accompanying for krithis.

Poongulam Subramaniam was good on the mrudangam. I have always liked his playing. He has gentle strokes, which were VERY welcome after Tiruvarur Vaidyanathan and Neyveli Venkatesh. He certainly added to the sowkhyam of the concert with his playing. I didn't notice the ghaTam vidwan that much, so I suppose the fashionable description would be to label him as "unobtrusive". The thani was nice.

A beautiful concert with a memorable jAnaki ramaNa and kinkiNi nAdam. (What a repertoire PP has, as well!)

Vid. PP's was my last concert for the season. I rebooked my tickets from Brindavan to LalBagh - and I am proud of my nobrainer decision :) This is the first time I am hearing this legend live - and I enjoyed it thoroughly. I haven't heard the andolika varnam before (I got it thanks to my neighbor having the guide open at that time). Her keeravani and SD were indeed a treat. The keeravani song was new to me and (sorry bilahari) was welcome - having heard only kaligiyunte and amba vani repeatedly. Her post tani songs were refreshing - the PV was splendid. As bilahari pointed out, there were sruti issues at times - but the sheer bliss you feel in these concerts makes you look beyond these issues.

My salutations to the two vidushis - Vedavalli and Ponnammal - for making my trip to Madras a very very memorable one.
