After much deliberation, I decided to open the can of worms.
I know I should be ready to face the brickbats now:-)

Re: Can of worms
nice presentation of thoughts! I like the title very much and it is indeed the truth also!
How ever there are few exceptions like Sow. Prachotan, aged 11 i think, whose concert i was fortunate to be there for 25 mts and witnessed a performance par excellence! This was for The Indian Fine Arts at German Hall with the enhancement artiste Sow. Kamalakiran (same age) on violin also excelling!

Re: Can of worms
For the unfortunate souls like myself who cannot read Tamil, would someone give a translation or a gist of the article?

Re: Can of worms
Very much enjoyed your sarcasm-strewn writing style, like.."ஆதார ஷடà¯à®œà®¤à¯à®¤à®¿à®²à¯ தஸ வித கமகமà¯à®®à¯ பாடி விடà¯à®Ÿà¯.." ( ..after singing 10 types of gamakams on AdhAra Shadjam )
On the content, the youngsters I listened to this season were at the Academy and the quality level was not bad...and your point is about what happens at rest of the numerous sabhas. The danger is similar to inflation..Profile descriptions like "I have sung during the season" will start losing its value.

I agree with you gamakam 100%. Who has seen a prodigy (other than my grand daughter who is 31/2 years old)? these boys and girls should slog for 50 years and when they are 80+ they would be truly eligible for sangeetha kalanidhi. that time they would sing very well; only problem would be sruthi will be here and there. these children should be disciplined and the parents should be let off with a stiff warning.
long live carnatic music!

Re: Can of worms
Why brickbats. It is a well written article-quite humourous too.
Three things came to mind
1. How many concerts are given to children, 0-10 years, 10-15 years, 15-20 years during 2010 -11 season. Can a tabular column be made with different sabhas and number of children's performances.
2. I have a serious feeling that children are rather pushed to their limits, by enthusiastic parents. It is considered normal but I think it is one form of child abuse. Not only music but also too much pushing to- dance, painting, piano, other instruments, karate, yoga, etc., etc., besides of course, the regular curricular activities. There are no limits to their "enthusiasm". Some NGO or govt body should be entrusted with the authority to inspect and draw guidelines.
3. In some cases, the other end of the spectrum also happens. Senior gurus sometimes hold back the stage appearance of his/her shisyas because, according to them, they are not adequately trained. This turns out to be a handicap for the young aspiring and talented youngsters. I do not want to mention names. Although it is done by the gurus in the best interest of the students, I feel that the student himself or his parents should take a lead and get deserving chances in sabhas at the appropriate age.
