Mrudangam : J VaidyanAthan
Kanjira: Anirudh Athreya
Morsing : S Krishnan
Concert Duration/ Day : 10 to 12:30 noon , Sunday
...
3. shAradhE - kuntalavarali - arasi
4. vandAdum sOlai(N,S) - harikAmbOdhi - kalki
5. rAma rAma pAhi(R) - devagAndhAri - ST

6. smaranE oNde (R,S) - malayamArutham - PD
7. sudha mayee - amruthavarshini - HMB
8. janani ninnuvinA(R) - reetigowlai - SubbarAya sAstri
9. nee irangA yenil - atAnA - Psivan

JS has so much of DKP touch and there is nice azhuttam in her voice. I must have missed first 15 minutes of her concert , additionally also missed perhaps the last half an hour. Incidentally this concert I did not take the song list , I was more assisting arasi and krishnan sir who came there before they left back to bangalore,

I did not hear arasi's kuntalavarAli, but I really loved Amarar kalki's vandAdum sOlai . Her diction is so clean and the words were so moving, she sang a neraval too dont remember where that was but certainly a very poignant neraval line and it was a nice submain. An alapana in devagandhAri with a touch of a rare krithi by ST was quite ok.

The pick to me as her malayamArutham , she sang beautifully , her voice though bit karudumoradu but has a clean finish in diction, she is a musician who does not cannibalise words for the sake of music (though I welcome partial cannibalization). Her sense of rhythm with JV and Anirudh perussion was a perfect morning breeze despite it being malay A mArutham. Her reetigowlai was well received as it was most janaranjakam , as she was half way thru nee irangA in atanA, I had to leave.

The percussion team was a full bench kutcheri , the volume was very high till first half of the concert. The violin was so high with the twang twang strokes of morsing at times it was difficult to connect to the vocalist. The mridangam volume was high till half of the concert but later was ok , anirudh gave an able support, the right volume man in the team.

The year began with a "vocal honesty" of andhra DKPattammAl. This year I also began with meeting arasi and krishnan sir . Just one anecdote nothing to do with the concert , but to do with Krishnan sir.You all may not know krishnan sir as much as Arasi.I went to the concert to meet arasi and I was assuming that I can go and meet them in the concert and invite them for lunch.

So I met first arasi , incidentally krishnan sir was not there in the hall as I entered . I asked Arasi to join along with krishnan sir to lunch.Arasi said it is fine for me , but need to ask krishnan sir for a final opinion. So I went to Krishnan sir some time half way thru concert and asked him to join for lunch . He said it is fine , as long as arasi is fine , incidentally they both were 200 meters apart .

I had to break this "deadlock impasse of NRI" ;( , each NRI spouse saying they are fine but still asking me to get the final go ahead option with the other spouse.

So I asked krishnan sir,
"What Sir , arasi Told me to ask you, and now you are telling me to ask her? Are you coming for lunch or not"?

Krishnan Sir told me(he has got a great sense of humour)
"If arasi tells me jump , I only ask the height " (ha ha, i could not control myself.)  , You must see his timing ,when he hit with this punch line I felt even Y Gee Mahendra or s ve shekhar will not get that kind of spontaneity and timing.

In short the kutcheri season needs these kind of ideal patronage , of course we need more and more of Krishnan sir and Arasi. Non stop concert hopping at this age for the last two weeks is just too good .While smt JS sang a nice concert but we had to leave without hearing fully.

Rajesh,
Vocal support was by Vasumati Vasudevan who lives in Florida. Others you have heard are Padma Srinivasan (her niece and Rukmini Sundararajan's daughter), Ahalya Aravind (great nephew's wife) and Sheela Rajendra, her daughter.
Padma Srinivasan, after many years of silence, gave a solo at Raga Sudha last summer. She will be singing a few concerts this year. I will let you know when I know the dates. While her singing issimilar to her aunt's, you will find a few other influences there--Semmangudi, Brinda & Muktha and more.

The nereval in vaNDADum SOlai was at pAdat tAmaraigaL nondiDa.
I am sorry I didn't take notes either. Being the first of Jan, too many familiar faces to say hello to, exchanging greetings and my having to leave my seat several times :(

Half of your review, unlike your usual ones belongs in the Lounge ;) Hope you don't get reprimanded for that. While K waits for my orders to jump  I am thinking of new ways of testing his ability to jump even higher :) The old lady did double the number of concerts while her spouse did some resting in between--all because of all the strain from jumping up for me

Harishankar,
Thanks for your interest. If you go to Rajalakshmi Audio's site and click on the Arasi CD image, click on any particular song, you will see the lyrics of it there.

Rajesh,
Whose kalyana vasantham is there? Suryaprakash's?
