I never even suspected that! :$Mudikondan S.N.Ramesh is one of today’s leading vainika vidwans and comes directly in the shishya parampara of Sangeetha Kalanidhi Mudikondan Sri Venkatarama Iyer.
So this is the second Mudikondan VI lineage concert in two months.

Which was the first one? I thought that the MVI lineage was the rarest of the rare. Seems I am mistaken

OK. I understand. Strangely I never thought anything about Vedavalli mami's guru, etc., she herself being an elder statesman in the field.srikant1987 wrote:Mudikondan Venkatarama Iyer -> R Vedavalli -> V Sumithra.

Song List:

2. Vatapi Ganapathim- Hamsadwani- swara
3. Smarane onde Salade - Malayamarutham - Purandara dasa- swaram
4. Paramathmudu- Vagadeeswari- Ragam and swaram
5. Nannukanna thalli- Sindhukannada
6. Sub Main Hiranmayeem Lakshmi Sada- Lalitha - alapana, swaras
7. Jagadodharana - Kapi
8. Marugelara- Jayanthasri
9. Main Shankarabharanam was taken up for elaboration. Ragam and Tanam were presented in a wholesome treat. Instead of a Pallavi, Swararagasudha -swaras.
10.Tani avarthanam.
11.Karadare Bare Barade- Janasamodhini
12. Bajagovindam-ragamalika,
13. Pillangoviya Chelva Krishna in Mohanam
14. Bhagyaada Lakshmi Baramma in Sree raga.
15. Mangalam.
The concert was an extremely pleasant and enjoyable programme. Senior percussionists Sri.A.V.Anand on Mriangam and Sri. T.N.Ramesh on Ghatam gave good support.
The best piece was Lalitha. Very soulful presentation. A number of kannada compositions were consciously included. No Neraval. Pisuru on rare occasions. But overall a very good presentation.

KSSR,
Thanks for the review. It is always nice to read about a veena concert.
Any chance you could upload a clip or two?
I am not used to seeing a mridangist on the left side of a veena player (like Sri. A V Anand is sitting. By the way, it is nice to see Sri. A V Anand's picture - I have good memories of seeing him in person reguraly during the 1970s!)
Would you know why Sri. Anand was seated to the left of Sri. Ramesh?
Is there a guideline or is it just a convention that the mridangist is to be seated on the right side of the veena player, like I have usually seen it.
I don't know if I am reading too much into this!

Very simple. He is left-handed and so he plays the valanthalai (the part of the mridangam with the black dot) with his left hand. Convention is that this side of the mridangam faces outward in a concert. So the mridangist's orientation is set up this way to accomodate this.Would you know why Sri. Anand was seated to the left of Sri. Ramesh?

Also, there are Arjun Kumar and Jayachandra Rao who are left handers and hence sit as Sri.Anand does. It has nothing to do with veena. They sit on this side in all concerts. I remember a jolly interaction between the two music performer friends- Mysore Nagaraj and Arjun Kumar- when MN said that he wants his normal place and cannot give it to Arjun

Thank you for the explanation!
I should have thought about the black dot aspect of the mridanga (but it was way past my bed time when I posted my query!)

This is the first concert of Mudikondan Ramesh that I have heard. I was wondering why thre was no neraval at all. Is it always so or this time did he just skip it ( as part of the innovation)? His taanam was very good.
