Really sad news. His music will live forever.
He passes away on the same day Saint Thyagaraja did in the 19th century. Coincidence?

Re: Pandit Bhimsen Joshi in intensive care unit?
Indeed a great loss. His musical quest which makes for poignant reading began at the age of 11 when he ran away from home and boarded a train to North India, singing bhajans enroute to get a morsel food. A few links about the maestro.

His voice was such a pitch that I used to like HM only because of him. Mile Sur Mera thumArA in doordarshan was the earliest intro of him, a truly great singer who merged in nAdabrahma.

May I request Sri.Mankuthimma to upload what he thinks as the best semi classical piece of Panditji as a tribute to this great artist. I have his jugalbandi recording with Dr.BMK from DD during Indian golden jubilee Independece day celbrations. What a programme !

Pandits Ravi Shankar on his sitar and Bhimsen Joshi with his vocal chords first drew me into HM. In my youth, I had the great privilege of visiting him (because I happened to be traveling with one of his family friends). When we arrived late in the evening, a sitar concert was already in session which went on almost till dawn. We left in the morning after being treated to a breakfast of KichDi cooked by his wife. I was made to feel so much at home by their hospitality and simple ways. A precious memory, indeed.

Panditji was a 'Doyen of HM' a Parallel to SSI in CM.
Extremely sad abt his demise.
Heartfelt condolences to his family and all his fans.
Pandiji's singing Haridasa songs was too unique.
All of us have heard the famous "Bhagyada Lakshmi Baramma" in Madhyamavathi.
His rendition of this song in a different tune was not only refreshing and one loved to listen Panditji's version which was always haunting. Other Haridasa songs like " yAke mUka nAdhe" ;' sri nikEthana' ;" Kailasa vAsa(Mohanam)" one loved to listen as many times as " vara raga laya" of GNB.
In the kannada movie "Sandhya Raga" Bhimsenji & Balamurali were brought together by the famous kannada film director GV Iyer( The Director who daringly made "Shankaracharya" movie in Sanskrit! ) to sing " Nambidhe Ninna Naada Devateye Thaaye Bharathiye" song in two different styles. GV Iyer had expressed in an interview how tough it was to bring these two personalities together to sing this song in Purvi Kalyani.
Later these two giants sang Kalyani sharing the same dias in their distinct styles in which Balamurali made Panditji to sing Balamurali's pallavi- ""Sangeethame mama sukha dAyi; sa ri ga ma pa da ni su swara" which all the rasikas have enjoyed.

We know Panditji sang compositions with lyrics in Hindi - Braj/Awadhi, Sanskrit, Marathi, Kannada. Did he sing compositions in Tamil ? Was he also fluent in the spoken languages? Lata sang with Pandit Bhimsen Joshi. Did MSS Ammal sing with Panditji?

Re: Pandit Bhimsen Joshi in intensive care unit?
Sweet reminiscences - Panditji by Dr. BMK.
From the Deccan Chronicle, Jan 25 :
Jan. 24: Dr Bhimsen Joshi, who passed away on Monday, was a maestro. He had flexibility in singing, a rare voice and also melody.
Around 40 years ago I acted in a Kannada film with him. I don’t exactly remember the name of the film, but I was offered the role of the guru and Joshi, who was 10 years older than me, that of the shishya.
This was the first time I saw Joshi. He was very stubborn and proud, a common trait for a person and artiste of that age. When he saw me, he said, “Are you my guru? As a guru you would want to teach me lessons and find fault with my music. But I never sing it the wrong way.”
Then I told Bhimsen that a guru need not find fault always, and that there are sishyas who sing better than the guru. He liked my words and agreed to act.
During the course of the shooting, he asked me why we cannot have a rehearsal before the formal ‘take’. I told him there is no need for a rehearsal and that we can directly have the ‘take’.
At that stage, he did not know much about Carnatic music. While the shooting was on, I recited a ‘geetam’ and also a ‘samgati’, and he sang it wrong. I corrected him four, five times. It became a part of the film. After the shooting, he said, “You are my guru really.” We became close after that.
In 1980s, when Kona Prabhakara Rao was the Governor for Maharashtra, he asked us to participate in a jugalbandi. We were in Mumbai for a full week for the rehearsal, but we kept talking about music and the rehearsals never took place. In the end, we gave a great concert.
The next day some publication from Pune, where Joshi resided, carried a report saying that the ‘Madrasi musician’ (that is me) sang well. Joshi told me this and also became an admirer of Carnatic and me.
We then gave a number of jugalbandi programmes. But one thing I want to tell you, he never sang Hindustani, nor I Carnatic, in our concerts. What we sang was Indian music.
He would start one geetam in Kalyani, I would sing a similar one in a different tune. Then he would catch that tune and expand upon it, and I used to expand from where he ended the geetam. It was an ocean of music and we used to swim in it and enjoy.
We were two individuals but our music was one. I liked his excellence in sruthi and he liked my raga prastaram. We had a great personal rapport too. I used to visit Pune and participate in the music festivals.
As told to Ch. V.M. Krishna Rao

Re: Pandit Bhimsen Joshi in intensive care unit?
Sweet reminiscences - Panditji by Shyam Benegal.
From The Deccan Herald, Jan 25 :
Humble in his greatness
Shyam Benegal, January 24, DHNS:
Pandit Bhimsen Joshi probably had the most beautiful voice of all singers in the last 75-80 years. For me, he was one of the two greatest Hindustani vocalists born in this country, the other being Pandit Mallikarjun Mansoor.
I met Panditji a few times and I was struck by his humility despite his huge reputation. He was an extraordinary human being. Anybody would be embarrassed by his simplicity.
Another feature of his that struck me was his patience. He had it in abundance, and used it to give great care to details in anything he did.
I had the fortune of attending his concerts both in India and abroad and was spellbound by his singing. I was grateful that he sang for a documentary that I had done on Jawaharlal Nehru. It was in the early 1980s and I had asked him to do a rendition of lalit and marva raagas.
When he came to the studio, my music director wanted him to do it to a particular beat. A man of Panditji’s stature could have just shut him up. But he was such a great soul that he did not. Instead, he, with remarkable patience, explained to the music director precisely why the raaga would not work if he sung to that suggested beat.
I thought it was extraordinary for him to do that. He went on to sing, and marvellously. His singing of marva was simply great. I wanted him to sing when Nehru dies in the documentary. As is known, marva is a daytime to sunset raaga. The daytime optimism gives way to thoughtfulness as the sun goes up and into sunset. Panditji rendered it in such a way he made it emotionally an extraordinary raaga.
I did occasionally meet him and my meeting last meeting was about two years go when I went to see him at his Pune home. I remember that despite his incredible pain, he sat up and spoke a little and offered me traditional hospitality. His family was present and he made it a point to serve me sweets. He wanted to do it himself. I cannot forget the love and affection he showed even at that age and despite ill health.
Panditji deserves every bit of love and affection that the country has given him. For he gave much to the country. He richly deserved the Bharat Ratna bestowed on him.

Re: Pandit Bhimsen Joshi in intensive care unit?
Sweet reminiscences - Panditji
From The Deccan Chronicle :
Jan. 24: The fact that Bhimsen Joshi died on the same day that the saint- poet- composer Thyagaraja did, may be a coincidence. But what a coincidence! Anyone who listened to his rich resonant baritone, effortlessly raised to a crescendo, had little doubt about Mr Joshi being divinely gifted.
The streak of restlessness in him made him run away from home many a times. He was always found sleeping in temples following the visit of a Bhajan troupe. His harassed parents had pinned a note, with his home address prominently written, on his back: “If you find this boy anywhere, please help him return home!” Finally he got on to a train without a ticket, headed for a meet with Savai Gandharva, the man who would become his guru in the North Indian town of Lucknow. When the ticket collector demanded the ticket, young Bhimsen began to sing all the popular bhajans of the day that made the railway official forget and forgive the talented boy.
Sometime in his middle age, he became addicted to alcohol. His fans forgave him. Many a time when he found he could not perform, he would promise to sing the next day, free of cost. His adoring and sympathetic fans would agree.
Once, after a long time, he agreed to give a concert in his home town, Hubli-Dharwad. He came late, flustered and appealed that he would sing the next day. But the crowd was insistent. Around midnight he began the concert with a Mangalam song, the parting song of the day. The crowd jeered at his audacity and cunningness.
But Joshi continued the Mangalam song till the early hours of the morning, singing the same song in a dozen different ragas. And the crowd went home satisfied.

No. They never sang together. However both loved each other's music and attended each others concert. There was one concert of MS in Puttaparthi where she sang in the concluding piece "Bhavayami Gopalabalam" of Annamacharya in Raga Yaman to an audience which consisted of Pandit Ravi Shankar, Pandit Bhimsen Joshi and Parveen Sultana (amongst others) and Bhimsen ji was moved to tears and told MS that this song could never be matched. This incident finds mention in the book " MS & Radha - Saga of Steadfast Devotion" by Gowri Ramnarayan.shyama-priya wrote:Did MSS Ammal sing with Panditji?

Re: Pandit Bhimsen Joshi in intensive care unit?
All day spent in listening to Panditji brought up this indescribable video of chamber music where Panditji gives an electrifying performance, seated on a very clean and simple dias, uncluttered with mikes and wires, his striking voice ringing out melody after melody and at a pace like nobody's business. His involvement with the song Mohammed Shah Rangile is total, exuberant, extravagant, full of expressive gestures and looks. I could give just the youtube link (courtesy, vintageaudio54) but this American fan (and musician-teacher) has put together a beautiful tribute with his own personal discovery of Panditji as the legendary singer, embedding many video clips. I think you will enjoy this journey as much as I did.

"Done Thank you.

Had you left it at Done Thank you, it would have been nice.
Since you take the trouble to post a lot of videos and use the written medium as well to convey info - read worldwide, it is advisable to at least use important terms carefully.

Re: Pandit Bhimsen Joshi is no more.
Venkatakailasam,
I think your post # 49 is not in good taste.
There is no reason to get so worked up.
