A Tribute to a munificent benefactor

Post by vidya »

His Highness Raja Jagadveera Rama Venkatesvara Ettappa who ascended the Ettayapuram throne in December 1899. December 2010 marked
the Raja’s 132nd birth anniversary. A tribute to a munificent benefactor by Ravi Rajagopalan.

This was posted in December but I had to wait until the madness of the season was over so people could get back to the normal attention span.

Many thanks Vidya for sharing this valuable historical piece. May we hope that the picture of His Highness Raja Jagadveera Rama Venkatesvara Ettappa will also adorn the future volumes of SSP. By the by by when is the release of the rest of the volumes scheduled?
Is it possible to post the lyrics for the nice kriti?

cmlover,
Thanks to Ravi Rajagopalan for writing this piece. As to the other volumes? Only SHE knows or Perhaps SHE does not! :)
Here are the lyrics:

pallavi
ṣaḍādhāra tatva vināyaka
ṣaṭcakrādi mūlavāsa māmava sivaputraka

anupallavi

ṣaḍānana śrī kārtikeya varada
sārngapāṇihita bhāgineya

caraṇam
anantasūrya tejasvarūpa
āgama siddhānta vākya jāla
anantakuṇḍali bhūṣaṇa bhūṣita
anaṅgamohaka sundara deha

Vidya: Excellent contribution==all of us Rasikas today owe a debt of gratitude not only to the Princes and Zamindars of yesteryears but folks like Chinnaswamy Mudaliar but for whose tireless efforts to persuade a sceptical Subbarama Dikshitar and an ambivalent Ettayapuram Royalty we would not be having the Magnum Opus in SSP that we have today.

As a dilettante amateur musical historian I am fascinated by such reminiscences and I really wish the younger practitioners of today--Male/Female would make themselves familiar with the rich legacy handed to them by sincere devotees of music of the yesteryears without a trace of commercial greed or selfishness.
I am no economist but think of the potential employment opportunities for people of various levels of musical talent and appreciation that the creators(the Trinity) and preservers(the patrons--rich and poor) of legacy have bestowed upon all of us--an industry that never has an unemployment problem!!

I am curious,Vidya are you a practicing musician!! I enjoy your posts--Keep them coming!!!

Ramasubramanian Sir,
Commerce was always a part of the arts right from the establishment of temple hierarchies - with kalvettus of who gets paid how much nellu and so on but yes you are spot on about the role of temple economies and how a rich framework was created. I will just say that as long as we have a janus-faced approach with the past providing us the perspective and motivation for future directions things are ok.

This article was written by Ravi Rajagopalan who lives in Chennai. As for me, the only music I make is in my head and the people around me are thankful for that :)
