Our music has come across so many changes
,from” Panns” from Silapathikaram period
,to Pasuram's, theverams,thirupugaz,thirupavai of 8,9th century
,to devarnamas of pdasa of 14th century
to trinity keertanais of 17th ,18th century
to 19th century songs to this sort of ensemble.
so change is the only change .rest are same.
I can see this also one of the transformation of Karnatic music to reach wide spectrum of audience .
But good thing is just in the name of fusion music /ensemble they didn’t do much experimentation. They sticked to basic grammer/structure of our music.
I was impressed by
1.Rathipathipriya alapanai and song(side information "jagat janani "(dandapani desikar)was one of the early songs my mother used to sing and teaches us when we were kids,MSS immortal meera song(penned by Kalki(another great man) is also in same rathipathi priya(katrinele varum geetham)
So only this sort of information/things comes to my mind, not the song they presented. when u get deeply involved in a composition nothing should come in u r mind except what u listen.
2.Jog :Another beautiful north indian raga getting diluted for carnatic music.it is like having cocunut chutney as side dish for garam samosa.(instead of imli chutney ) KJY "Pramadavanam" (His highness abdullah) comes to my mind.
3.Sri alapanai was good, but again composition is not staying in my mind. A tribute to trinity. . . transition to karuna joodavamma, sri varalakshmi and endaro was good
4.'Vanaspathi as a musical composition is excellent. It is 4th Melakartha raga, comes after "Ganamurthy" . . . the first portion resembles lot of swarms of famous Thyagaraja keerthanai "Sri Krishna venu ganamurthe"
5”.Gowri Manohari” RTP and “Thanam” was traditional .It was the Curtain raiser for the Pallavi that is going to come.
The Pallavi was indeed the crown of the whole concert. Begada and Bhairavi were very traditional to the core. and the mesmerizing Nalinakanthi.
Thani was superb.
6.The final Medley I am not impressed.(Ilayaraja only comes to my mind in the first portion).Kamaj ,Desh, Ending again with Kamaj (jayathi jayathi was indeed a pleasant surprise ) But still it was a good experiment to switch between carnatic and western.
Kannan stole the show in this performance..
So I feel I am becoming old. age is catching me up. May be i need to listen again to appreciate in depth.

Badari,
We only know the name of the heart beat of the Heart Beat(Karthik). Who were the other performers in the ensemble?

I have had the opportunity to listen to one 'percussion' group in the past, the Layataranga group that perfomed in NJ (reviewed earlier on the forum) and my experience was that all of the pieces were made to 'rock' - I do not mean that in an entirely complimentary fashion. In my review, I point out how the beauty of the rhythm can be lost without pauses of silence - such silent intervals or softer beats will certainly enhance the pleasure from such concerts IMO. In the Layataranga concert I attended, even the phrase 'kaninda un vENugAnam kATRil varugudE' played on the flute were hammered away! I hope Heart Beat has a more perceptive performance.
