Dear Enna Solven .
In fact I have kenji koothadi forced many rasikas to listen to MMI and others by giving them MP3 CDs , Hard Disk transfers etc. Send space , media fire net tranfers and other methods . I had also given all my collections to "Thinkloud concerts " Sri Hariharan .
The highly noisy "Ma Ramanan" of MMI that Unixguru refers is also available with me . The Bangalore AIR concert of MMI was already available with me before kapali uploaded it . But the Sukhi Evaro piece is missing . I have been trying to remove Manavyala ( also by MMI) interference in his singing of Krishns Nee Begane and have partly succeeded and hope to upload it with his Nadanamakriya rendering of Kolarupadhikam.

Please follow the link and listen to the rare rendering of KRISHNA NEE by MMI over AIR Darwar
I have tried my best to remove the overlapping of Manavyala by MMI himself in another concert.

Enna_Solven, Thank you for your excellent tremendous effort in cleaning and posting the songs! The swaras in item 02 and 05 are indeed superb in addition to Niravadhi sukhada.. For clarification details, actually items 01 and 02 are from 1957 Malleswaram Sabha concert (violinist is Govindswami Naicker). Items 03,04 and 05 are from a half an hour 1961 AIR Bangalore radio relay of a Ramanavami festival concert in Mysore (violinist is Lalgudi) . Item 06 is from other concert recording. If I get access to the rest of the songs of the Malleswaram concert I will upload them. In those days recordings were done in reel tape recorders and since reel tapes were all imported and not easily available it was difficult to accomodate all recordings at one time!

Many thanks to whoever uploaded these treasures. I am listening to http://cid-5f3305198bd47502.office.live ... alani-1961 - which has a wonderful mohanam in the beginning. Everyone, please listen to it.

Balummi,
That's because they've made the Semmangudi thread "sticky". I don't know why, though! I mean, I think Chembai/GNB/MMI/ARI/KVN/MDR/MS/MLV/DKP/DKJ etc have equally large following here!

PB,
Semmangudi's thread was made sticky as MKR sir was giving lot of anecdotes , but right now we can remove stickiness from semmangudi. Having three threads as stick does not serve the purpose , as long as some one posts the thread will be up.
Mods
In general can you unstick lot of stale sticky threads too.

I am wondering why no one has come forward to write about GN Sir . Is that due to lack of interest ? Or his rasikas do not want to waste time in anecdotes and would rather listen to his concerts . And I understand from his son Sri GBD who is no more with us now , that his father did not encourage recording of his concerts unlike MMI . And on one occasion in 1962 when I escorted MMI to the dias in Mylapore Fine Arts Club as it was crowded with spool taperecoders and he could just manage to reach the centre without falling over! It may be of interest to rasikas that I got the rare recordings of MMI singing Paramugam in Karaharapriya and raga alapana of Anandabairavi for Kamalamba Navavarnam that he sang for AIR from GBD sir . He got them from his father who had served as the Director of AIR for sometime!

I would love to hear this paramukham enayya and karthikeya gangeya , can you tell me which specific folder in your dvd1 and dvd2 these numbers are there . I just want to download those . To wade thru each dvd and collection and get those is difficult.

Dear rajesh '
Please follow the link to download Paramugam by MMI in karaharapriya . We got this piece from none other than Sri GBD , son of Sri GNB http://www.mediafire.com/?hkuot8g407hv8fd Regarding Karthikeya Kangeya only a small portion of the song is available with me . The intervention of News Broadcast while the song was being broadcast from Annamalai Manram prevented my father from recording the full song .
Even this 5 minute recording of this thodi is very inspiring . Shall I post this bit also?

Many thanks for all these downloads, particularly MMI's popular viruttham Veyyurutholipangan sung in Nadanmakriya and Senjurutti. It is the first time I am hearing MMI sing Nadanamakriya.
Dear Sri Rajesh, Just wanted to clarify that the link you referred to has not been put up by me. The concerts were uploaded by one Sri J Veeraraghavan. The link was sent to me by a friend in Bangalore. I only shared the information with forum members.
As much as Sri Balummi recalls his father recording MMI singing Karthikeya, I also recall my late father straining to stay tuned on our radio (we lived in New Delhi) to the AIR Chennai direct broadcast of that Tamil Isai Sangham concert in the 1960s. It is a short wave broadcast and one can hear the tinkling sounds in the background. It is indeed a pity that the broadcast was interrupted just as Sri MMI started the charanam and neraval-swaraprastharam. He has sung it beautifully and I wonder why he did not sing Karthikeya more often. His favorite krithis in Thodi were Kaddanu variki, Thaye Yesodha and Kamalambike. He has also sung Koluvamaragatha and Meenalochani. In the link above there is one rare recording of Dikshitar's Mahaganapathim in Todi, but the quality of recording is not good.
Some krithis Sri MMI has sung only once or twice in concerts such as Karthikeya, Sree Ganapathi (Sowrashtram), Sree Saraswathi (Arabhi) and others. There is a superb and scintillating "Pakkala Nilabadi" by MMI on Youtube - it does not figure in any of the concert recordings currently available. I do not know when he sang this. Elsewhere on page 9 of this thread (Message 209) Sri Vishnuramprasad has listed a number of krithis rendered by Sri MMI which are not to be found in currently available recordings. I would love to hear his singing Papanasam Sivan's Undu Kuladeiva Raman (Todi), Rama Neeyada (Karaharapriya), Vanajaksha (Kalyani ada tala varnam) and others listed by Sri Vishnu.

downloaded from veeraraghavan's link http://cid-5f3305198bd47502.office.live ... ani%20Iyer one of the radio concerts.
one of the tracks has Sabhapathikku - Abhogi - superb, melodious neraval at Kripanidhi. Have listened to this piece atleast 10 times since yesterday.
MMI is accompanied by Mayavaram Govindaraja Pillai (Violin) and CS Murugaboopathy (Mridangam) - what accompaniment by MGP - sweet melodious violin tone; not many artists do have such a tone and his violin seems to suit MMI's sruti aligned singing approach. Same with CSM, what soft mridangam, not just vanilla saravalaghu; his melkalam accompaniment is so nice. In my view, these two are almost the perfect accompaniment for MMI. It seems that these sort of artists seem to be in oblivion and did not get much limelight.

Dear Ravi ,
The site that you are refering where sri Veeraragavan uploaded bulk of MMI recordings were from Sri Kasturirangan who is a close associate of Vishnu and we with Sriraman & ARS Mani had launched a massive drive of MMI collections in 80's and 90s and endedup with 250 cassettes of C-90 and they had all been digitalised and I had also personally digitalised some 1500 cassettes of SSI , Ariyakudi , Alathur , GNB and others and had distributed eveything to whoever is interested.
MAHAGANAPATHIM that you are refering is available with clear recording in a couple of radio concerts. Also MMI's rendition of Ninne Namminanu (AIR) in Thodi is also available. If rasikas are intersted , I can upload them and also any of the other greats . Sabapathikku that Sri Annamalai is refering was fantastically rendered by MMI in one particular TasmilIsai Concert and we , the group , were exhilarated and repeatedly listened it together when we got the recording from Mr. Ramachandran of Saidapet in1990 just when Srimathi MLV Amma passed away!

Dear Venkatakailasam ,
The pallavi lines are " Thenparam Giri Velane , Sundari Manalane " it does not seem to form part of any song . I had made a mistake in refering to MMI's thodi rendering as "Ninne Nammi" it should rather read " Ninnuvina Sukamu" and this had made my search very timeconsuming . Now I shall make some audio corrections and post it soon.

Dear Sri Balummi,
Thanks very much for the Ninnuvina and Koluvamaragatha renderings by MMI. I was also quite surprised when you initially mentioned Ninne Nammi Nanu. To my limited knowledge Sri MMI had a distinct preference for Thygaraja and Dikshitar compositions and seldom sang Syama Sastri compositions with the exception of O Jegadamba in Ananda Bhairavi. Please correct me if I am wrong.

Dear Sri Balummi,
You echoed the very thoughts I had in my mind. All these years I have been thinking that I am a little mad to be so crazy about MMI's music more than 40 years after the maestro has passed away. After joining this forum I am grateful to know and realize that there are many more such "mad men" around
. I do not know what is the magic behind the great man's music that it keeps us all so enthralled. The more you hear, the more you yearn for more. Last night I was thinking - did MMI ever sing the Pancharthna Kirthanas of Thyagaraja - is there any available available recording? Did he sing Syama Sastri's Bhairavi Swarajati "Amba Kamakshi"? Has he sung Dikshitar's "Sree Kanthimathim"? - the list is endless! Despite his phenomenal repertoire, there is no end to his fans' greed and thirst for more! So please continue to feed us more. Thank you.

Re: Madurai Mani Iyer
Dear Ravi ,
My personal explanation for MMI not singing Pancharatna Kritis or Swarajathis would be :
His failing eyesight even in 1950s and he was dependent on others for reading even newspapers .He cannot
refer to any book or jottings if suddenly his memory fails while singing them , or even while preparing for
the concert ( and he never prepares for concerts) . No manodharma is required for singig them . We have to
necessarily repeat from memory what Sri Thiagaraja or Syama Sastrgal had composed in respect of these
compositions. Whereas in respect of other compositions lyric part of them are very small and even if he
forgets , he can linger on the previous lines with improvised sangathis and raga elaborations till his memory is
regained or gets assistance from behind .
As for musical experience of MMI , I can only repeat what the great Sri TRS had said about it in Ragasudha Hall in 2010 . He said that MMI can sing Thodi without touching Gandharam and according to his knowledge you can never sing Thodi without Gandharam which simply means that we have to suitably ignore the grammar or take for granted that whatever MMI sings is grammar ! Actually what happened was , as Vishnu observed , that he had already builtup the image of the raga so strongly that thodi lingered in our memory for a long time afterwards and whatever he sings subsequently the thodi memory refuses to go.

Balummi sir, I have listened to about 400 songs of MMI from 30 or so concerts, including many several one-hour AIR concerts. The range of krithis is rather small and I yearn to listen to other krithis that he has rendered. So, I will gladly accept whatever you upload. Your recordings are the cleanest that I can find. It looks unlikely that we would visit India this summer, otherwise I will come to you with a hard disk!

Re: Madurai Mani Iyer
Balummi Sir: While it certainly speaks of MMI's versatility in bringing out a gana raga like Thodi omitting a note like Gandharam(Patnam Subramania Iyer;s Thodi Varnam Eranapai for the most part omits the Panchamam) young vidyarthis of this forum should not blindly follow MMI's practice because for Thodi the Gandharam has several fascinating facets--_Viswa Sir-- of the Dhanammal Family used to tell me to observe Gajavadhana Thodi Chittaswaram where there are multiple facets of the Gandaram and how they uplift the entire Krithi.
While slightly deviating from this point, take Sriragam--the Dhaivatha prayogam in the descent is termed "alpa Dhaivata prayogam meaning it can be used sparingly. Yet if you carefully analyse Thyagaraja's Pancharatna krithi Entharo you will notice that he has completely eschewed the Dhaivatha prayogam and yet the beauty and elegance of the swaras he has woven into the krithi have not been diminished by the lack of the usage. However Muthuswami Dikshithar has adopted the Dhaivatham albeit sparingly(only once) in the Sri Varalakshmi as well as the the navavarnam krithi kamalamba. I understand that Syama sastri in his Vanajasana krithi has used the alpa dhaivatham- as well-- Ariyakudi(although coming in Thyagaraja's lineage) has used the alpa dhaivatham in his Thiruppavai(mayanai mannu vada madurai).
Point: Any deviation from a basic tenet within limits if handled elegantly without undue stress on the deviation itself is always welcome just to relieve the monotony of tradition. One final note on this from Muthiah Bhagavathar(MMI's guru)--once he was asked about Sruthi bedam and some artistes's excessive use of it--his reply in Tamil roughly translated went like this:
You have built a nice house in a posh neighborhood and departing from the other houses in the area YOU have made the front window bars( in the front porch) spaced more than normal--enough to be able to enter the house thro it without having to go thru the door . Once in a while you may contort yourself and enter thro the window instead of using the door--but if done repeatedly it loses its appeal not to speak of spraining yourself!!!!! Anything done in moderation is OK but if overdone loses its charm!!!!
Sorry for the digression but then that has been the bane of my life!!!

Many thanks for your explanation. We, his rasikas, know that Sri MMI was visually challenged and it would have been very difficult for him to memorize the lengthy sahithyam of Pancharathna kirthanas and swarajathis. Even with this serious disability it is a wonder that he could sing such a wide range of compositions. I look forward to attending his centenary celebrations in Chennai next year and know more about him. Is there any list of all the krithis that he has sung in the recordings currently available?

Dear Balu Sir,
Here is an interesting incident that happened recently in my friend's house. She is a vocalist, based in California, and our forum member too.
She had apparently wanted to listen to some music. Her son,a 4th class student was doing his homework and immediately got excited and said "Ahahaha!!! please put MMI"... While connecting, seems my friend was singing "Brocheva..".. to which her son said "Amma, don't sing, im not able to do my homework!!!!"...She asked him "appo MMI paatu mattum podungara...wont that be distracting?"..he told her it seems "NO...because MMI is classic!!!!"
It shows that even modern day kids get attracted to MMI's divine music...It is a testimony to the fact that MMI charmed the young and old alike, as in
http://www.hinduonnet.com/fr/2002/10/25 ... 340900.htm
This kid, plays mridangam and is apparently a fan of MMI's 6 minute Kambodhi Parimala Rangapathe!!! He listens to two of the greats MMI and MDR!!!!

Dear Perarulalan ,
I had seen this little boy in Youtube , jumping with uncontrollable joy when his father played "Vidachalathura" Record
What explanation can be given for such a small todler's reactions?
Dear Enna Solven ,
Ishall reveal to you the secret "why many of my MMI recordings are very good " . The audio corrections were made under the supervision of a great living Sangeetha Vidwan ( I had promised that I will not reveal his name under any circumstance as that would prejudice his name as partial to one vidwan namely MMI " ) . This was true because we have to repeatedly listen to the same sangathi over and over again until it is okayed and this ordeal he was not prepared to undergo for other greats.
I have stored some 3.5GB of MMI (total 22GB) in Mediafire site and have revealed the id and password to my close friends. I do not know whether I am allowed uploading of the entire 22GB ? If I reveal the password in this forum , there will be no control and anybody can even remove everything in the storage.

Balummi sir, There are somethings worth waiting for. I shall try to wait
My understanding of password protected access is that others cannot delete, only the owner can. I may be wrong. I will read up and let you know. On the other hand, if you reveal it here in the forum, people may mass download and you might have to pay a lot if you are using a paid subscription,
There is an alternative. If you create another mediafire account you can copy some of the concerts to this second account from your primary account by using "Save to my account' option after putting in the mediafire link and password (while logged into the 2nd account). You can then share the link to the concerts in the second account with others. This way, you don't have to risk sharing the primary account with others AND also don't have to upload again whatever you want to share. Hope I make sense.

In my blog 'e'-swara at http://myblogkumara.blogspot.com/ , If you can see the side bar, I have given link to the entire range of my files
with Mediafire. There are around 4000 files -audio/Video/ instrumental/Devotional etc.
My view is slightly different. Whoever want to enjoy and whatever they require out of the available files, let them have it.
It may surprise you that the 320GB external disk, my files occupy 114 GB including what I have uploaded at Mediafire of 55 GB.
Whereever possible , i correct the audio quality with the relevant softwere.
This is just for information.

Re: Madurai Mani Iyer
Dear V Kailasam ,
I have been frequently visiting the youtube site and on many occasions I had enjoyed your blog . Videos consume lot of storage and I had avoided them . My 320 GB hard disc has more than 200GB of carnatic music including 22GB of MMI . It takes several years for me to complete listening one round . In fact I had discarded some 400 cassettes into the dustbin a few years ago . They were in the queue waiting to be digitalised and they were a great eyesore for my wife and d-in-law.
Dear Enna Solven ,
If I reveal the password anybody can become owner of my segment in mediafire. I feel it is always better to provide a link to a particular concert as I am doing now .
I feel guilty even for this as "SKRIS" the service provider for this site had repeatedly asked the members not to indulge in exchange of music recordings.

Re: Madurai Mani Iyer
A melodious Kalyani RTP from MMI that I downloaded from the link to Sree Veeraraghavan's upload:
http://cid-5f3305198bd47502.office.live ... alyani.MP3
The RTP is from the Music Academy concert during the 1966 Season. The file name does not mention the accompanists but the Academy website mentions them:
Wednesday 28th December 1966, 5.30 p.m.
The Music Academy New Building
Sangita Kalanidhi Sri Madurai Mani Iyer (Vocal)
Sri T. N. Krishnan (Violin)
Sri Vellore Ramabhadran (Mridangam)
Sri Alangudi Ramachandran (Ghatam)
The quality of the recording is good (Enna_Solven, please note if you do not have this already) and brings out the fine timbre of MMI's voice. The thanam, pallavi and kalpana swaras are lilting, the latter to the accompaniment of VR's superb percussion. He has sung the pallavi 'Kanakidaikkumo Sabesan Dharisanam' instead of the then more popular 'Un Darisanam Kidaikkumo Nadaraja'(For some reason Nadaraja Peruman seems to be the favorite deity of Pallavi singers!). TNK's alapana of Kalyani starts unusually on the gandharam and has some original sancharas. At one point MMI sings a string of swaras skipping the shadjam and panchamam - very nice.
I am sure Sri Balummi will have this in his archives and have more to say on this superb piece. Enjoy!

Enjoy!

Re: Madurai Mani Iyer
I love the entire 1966 MA recording! The kalyANi is truly outstanding, but I equally love the kalpanaswaras for koluvai (bhairavi) and the sevikka vENDum aiyyA (anDOlika). Extremely soulful music with brilliant accompaniment by TNK and VR.

Re: Madurai Mani Iyer
I am assuming all musicians wanted to differentiate a bit , when SSI sang the same kalyANi RTP Un Darisanam Kidaikkumo NatarrrrrrAAAajAA' , mmi wanted to present bit differently with his line "kAnakidaikkumO sabEsan dharisanam kandAl",otherwise one might be mistaken that he is kind of imitating the other. This is just a brilliant accompaniment of Vellore ramabadhran sir, wonderful controlled aggression by ganakaladhara, he reaches the sweet spot of aggression + sowkhyam .ravimandalam wrote: The thanam, pallavi and kalpana swaras are lilting, the latter to the accompaniment of VR's superb percussion. Repeating what I asked for before, has mmi sang thAnam with mridangam accompaniment (VKV and balummi Sir have you heard atleast one in live. Have you heard thru hearsay atleast one -Vishnuramprasad)
