Krishna mukunda murare he prabho swaram in hindolam behag
Enna Tavam - Kaapi – Papanasam sivan

A brilliant 3 hours 15 minutes concert by Shankarnarayanan and his banking team starting the new outreach programme of Fine arts.
The emcee ( she needed to rehearse the names well ) announced that all 3 were bankers.
Shankarnarayanan – Citibank ,Shivkumar –Deutshce bank and Rajesh – Bank of America worked as a BANKABLE team and brought down the fine arts hall.Probably they had decided to make it a memorable one as they were all in form from the varnam .No competition for business! They worked as a team.
Seethamma had nice alaap swaram which was done with breathtaking speed by Shankarnarayanan and equally returned well by Shivkumar with Rajesh following beautifully.
They repeated the same coordination in Kavaa va and through out the concert.
The Kambodi viruttam was a lovely one followed by Ivan Yaro rendered beautifully.
Chakkani raja was rendered for almost 1 hour with good alaap and return by SHivkumar and a beautiful thani by Rajesh
The re could have been some more tukkadas but they had done a marvelous karaharpriya .
The team deserved a well rounded applause which was given by the crowd.I was amazed by their team effort especially when I was told that they had met just 1 hour before .Both Rajesh and SHivkumar are from Bombay and can give any top men from Chennai a tough fight and win
A wonderful performance by Shankar narayan and I wont mind going again for this team if they play in Bombay.

Tx for the review. Curious on where the neraval was sung for the varAli.
ranjani niranjani is the GNB krithi
ivan yArO in kambOdhi is a kavikunjara bhArathi composition.
The RTP that the citibanker sang is a number that prof TRS sang in the past , lovely and a gripping one. We have a lot of musicians who are bankers and ex bankers but this team of Deutshe bank, Bank Of America lead by a citibanker are indeed modern bankers who are carnatic practitioners.

Prof TRS is Sri.V.Shankarnarayanan's Guru.
Virutham "Pachai Meni" should be "Pachai Ma Malai Pol Meni " "Thondaradipodi Aazhwar " Pasuram.

Corrections
It should read
Palaya sada - Nalina kanti - Swato tirunal
Ranjani niranjani - Ranjani and not Shivaranjani sorry my error
Thanks Rajesh sir and Suresh sir for pointing out the viruttam words.
The way he went for swarams at breakneck speed I thought he was Sheshagopalan sirs shishya. Thanks for informing about his guru.
Incidentally it was announced that his guru was Viagai Gnanaskandan at the start.

Priya,
Your obeservation of his style is correct. The announcement is also correct.
He had initial training under Vaigal Sri Gnanskandan. Now having advanced training under Prof Sri.TRS.
But he follows Sri.Seshagopalan style.
A very nice review.

I quite enjoy Shankar Narayanan's music. Details about his gurus can be found in his website http://www.vshankar.com/Guru.htm
It is a nice coincidence that all the artists in this particular concert happened to be bankers. Coming from Singapore, I know about Shankar Narayan and his pursuit for music. How committed must he really be to perform these many concerts every single month in different geographic locations (as i can see from his past & upcoming concert schedule in the site) while parallely pedalling a full time corporate job that comes with its own pressures.
I do share the same admiration for the other Shankar Narayanans out there, the likes of Prassana Venkatramans, Saketharamans & TNS Krishnas who carry on with modern jobs while being noticed in the performing circuits regularly. I am impressed that these youngsters are able to ride two demanding careers without any fuss or compromise. Though only time will tell what path they will eventually choose!

Shankaranarayanan style is very much like TNS , Since he has taken a citibank job he knows "citibank or carnatic musicians never sleep".Murali wrote:. They may not have to choose. Dr. Ananda Shankar Jayant is a reputed Hyderabad-based bharatanATyam exponent who has two successful careers in parallel: 1) as a dancer/teacher/choreographer and, 2) senior officer in the Indian civil services (by the way, her doctorate was earned with a thesis, not confered). I am sure they are many more such examples.Murali wrote:I am impressed that these youngsters are able to ride two demanding careers without any fuss or compromise. I think Shivakumar is a Chartered Accountant . And Thyagarajadasan ( Gokul ) is an IITian we all know. Vignesh Ishwar is a BE I understand . Violinist Smrithi Sundarrajan is a Software professional. etc ..So , in Mumbai, some well qualified professionals also pursue classical music seriously . Above all, life in Mumbai is a big challenge as one has to be aggressive to meet with day to day things like catching the local train , reaching office on time, leave on time and also reach home may be by 8 or 9 pm ! With all these , one has to learn fine arts !
Am not sure on other cities .......

Friends,
I feel we are deviating from the topic of discussion .We need to discuss more on Sri.Shankar's Mumbai concert under this heading. The dual profession issue can be discussed in" genearl topic" not under "Concert review and Recordings."
Regards.
