VRV: the mridangam artiste's name is right up there. R Sankaranarayanan (disciple of Srimushnam). Perhaps you didn't notice it because it is the same name as the vocalist?

This could actually be annoying, but I just love to listen to this done in the MMI-TNK concerts. The sheer sparseness and the resulting clarity in MMI's music, especially AlApanais, (also present in TVS's) goes a long way in making it so enjoyable.

MMI also waits for the whole phrase to be done in the same kAlapramANa.

Going through the song list I get a de ja vu. I must have come across an exact replica of this list in several of TVS's concerts ! Can't he do any better ? Does he think that, after Sangeeetha Kalanidhi, he doesn't need to improve ? He should look at what the younger artists are presenting. I was once a fan, but nowadays I am utterly disappointed.

Mahavishnu, Often times Shankaranarayan has his son singing with him. I made the assumption that the second Shankaranarayan was his son. Thanks for the clarification.

Isn't the son, Sri Mahadevan?

In that case, salagabhairavan would have expanded the R. :)

VRV: Understood. I would have been looking for the mridangist's name too, if I had made that assumption.

BTW, TVS has been singing that pallavi line for at least 30 years now. I wonder which part of it is the tribute to Sri Bhimsen.
As Sundararajan observes, TVS's music has not changed much in a long time. Some people like that, I personally did not find his kutcheris in the last season to be very appealing. But I have a lot of respect for his shruti and sahitya suddham.

Ravi: Yes, TVS's son is Mahadevan. He is pretty much a carbon copy of the father, slightly more nasal delivery. Perhaps age will grant him some more nAbhi hrt-kaNTha rasana!

It looks like his daughter Amruta is traveling with him on this sojourn. I have seen but not heard her on stage. She is performing in Bangalore too, from what I saw in another thread. Srikant, will you be attending by any chance?

I'll try to.

If TVS is indeed repeating his song lists too often, then it is understandable if his diehard fans are disappointed.

I do like TVS's music a lot, but I don't attend every concert of his, so the repeated items are not at all bothersome to me. The same item from the same artist is not at all an issue, if the concerts are separated by a few months +. :D

+ If you've attended other concerts in between, that is.

thanks, Srikant.

Salagabhairavan: Is there a Kishori Amonkar festival going on in Poona whose dates clash with the Sangeetha Sabha's schedule? I saw pics of the TMK concert, which seemed to be very well attended. Vikku and sons were in the audience. I was wondering if it was the same one that drew crowds away from TVS.

TVS's daughter has a very powerful voice - nearly a masculine style - not in any negative sense. Her singing is quite different from her father's. Quite nice indeed.

I had the opportunity of listening to her concert in Chennai in December. Impressive. I have done a brief review in these columns as well.
