Post by Sabaash »

Inagural Concert - Kuthiramalika Series 2011 - Jan 6 to 12 at Kuthiramalika Palace, Trivandrum

Sanjay Subrahmanyan - Vocal
Avaneeswaram S R Vinu - Violin
Nanjil Arul - Mridangam
Uduppi Sreekanth - Ghanjira
Manjoor Unnikrishnan - Ghatom
Kottayam Murali - Mukharshang

Parvathi Nayaka - Bauli - Adi (s)
Jaya jaya Padmanabha - Manirang - Adi
Gopalam sevakam - Bilahari - Rupakam (r n)
Pahi jaga janani - Hamsanandhi - Adi (r n s)
Sathatham Thavaka - Khaharapriya - Adi (r n s t)

Bansi vaale - Mohanam - Adi

Memorable concert. To be frank, i was not so amused by his recital at Brahma Gana Sabha during the december Season 2010. But the hamsanandhi he sang in this concert just made my day.

Even after 2 months since i listened to this concert, i can still feel the impact of that hamsanandhi.

All the pieces were compositions of Swathi Tirunal as it ought to be in this series. Parvathi Nayaka was a very refreshing piece to start with. Quite in line with the ambience of the sadas and packed audience.

Jaya jaya padmanabha, one of my all time favourites was rendered peacefully, ( i have heard many artists killing the essence of this kriti by presenting it in a faster tempo).

That took the concert to a whole new level. Perfect setting for the Bilahari alapana, though i was let down a bit with the performance of both the vocalist and violinist. the kriti was unfamiliar to me, nevertheless enjoyed it.

As i had hinted earlier, the highlight was hamsanandhi without doubt. The brisk ragalapana ( though it continued for about 10 minutes) was well reciprocated by Sri Vinu ( came to know that he is a disciple of Sri Mysore Manjunath).
Niraval at 'Sarasakritha nilaye' - famous for its 2 thalli eduppu was awesome followed by kalpana swarams.

The Main piece in kharaharapriya was unfortunately hampered by the sudden rain. For those who dont know Kuthiramalika concerts are held at an open space. Though 'shamianaas' were there, it was not enough cover for the audience.

The organisers of the series must be applauded for two distinct features

1. They have provided the upcoming / established local artists like Sreekanth, Unnikrishnan and Murali to perform with the best in the business

2. Though held in a open space, the acoustics was very decent.

I had listened to Sanjay's previous performances at the venue. In my opinion this should be rated as the best.
Though it did not have the so called ' rare items ' (which have over the years become the ones to look after in Sanjay's concerts), i thought there was some soul in this one. Though i have heard Vinu accompanying Sanjay many times, It was the first time Sri Nanjil Arul performing with Sanjay. And that was quite a change too.

And sorry for the belated review :-)

Better late than never! I guess this is what the old-timers refered to as the 'full-bench' concert, right?
