Hi,
I am new to this forum, and came across this thread, which was interesting. As an amateur carnatic music student, I've learned the violin for several years, and just started the mridangam to round out my knowledge of rhythm and percussion. Laya is indeed hard to master, and sometimes the use of external devices like metronomes does indeed complicate things. But some are more rhythmic than others, and an external aid is often useful to see how far off you are and correct yourself, and push you towards your inner laya.
With my interest in mridangam, I ended up developing an iphone/ipod touch/ipad app called Talanome, which is a metronome/talam-meter/talometer specifically for carnatic talas, using a natural manjira sound. Check it out at http://www.upbeatlabs.com/ , or on iTunes at http://www.facebook.com/l.php?u=http%3A ... D1&h=3af26 , or on Facebook at http://www.facebook.com/home.php#!/page ... 17?sk=wall
Appreciate your comments and feedback!
Cheers,
Sridhar
