Aruna's musical followers dont really contribute to help build carnatic music awareness.
And, pray, how do the rest contribute? Your case ought to be rested, mahesh3; it has no basis. I doubt very much if we, individually or in unison, contribute much to help build carnatic music awareness. I really do not see how!!

I missed this very interesting thread until now.

Harimau,
Tastes differ. But after fifty posts, I went back to your post numero uno and relished it as much as I would a few pages from Woodhouse, for the sheer humor in it. I have no comments about the singers, though:)

harimau wrote: Ragam-Tanam-Pallavi was being rendered in Atana. The pallavi line chosen was "Mohana Rama, Lavanya Rama, Rama Rama Guna Seema, Dasaratha Nandana, Dasarathi" in Kanda jati Ata talam, khanda nadai. Hearing the pallavi line would have been the right time to escape from the scene but one is tempted to stay and watch the inevitable which is what I did. The inevitable arrived after a short time in the form of "Mohana Rama Mukha jitha Soma Mudduka palkuma" in Mohanam. More inevitable followed in the form of "Lavanya Rama" in Purna Shadjam, "Rama Rama Guna Seema" in Simhendra Madhyamam, "Dasaratha Nandana" in Asaveri and "Dasarathi" in Todi. No, the original pallavi line was not sung in the various ragas; the pallavi lines of these songs were sung replacing the original pallavi.
i did listen to this concert live.

actually i have heard Charumathi Ramachandran do this with many of her pallavis for a while now

'raghupatE rAghuvIra raghunAyakA rA rA phanisayanA' was a pallavi she sang in sahAnA, with rAga malikA svarams in husEni, hamsadvani and harikAmbhOji

vinAyakA vallabha nAyakA gaNa nAyaka.. or something like that was another...

and she did not alter the eDuppu. for eg. the svarams in pUrNashadjam ended with lAvaNya rAma and it was placed exactly where it was placed originally in the aTANA pallavi and not at the beginning for the tALam and so on...

i dont think she changed the pallavi line.
however i definitely felt, she could have stayed on aTANA for a longer time, be it the alapanai, tanam or neraval and svarams on the pallavi before venturing into ragamalika...

Aruna Sairam pallavi in TODI
about aruna sairam well, i m only going to recollect, yet again, my only live concert of hers. It was at Chettinad vidhyashram hall. The main was madhyamAvati. The kriti was ADAdu asangAdu vA. The neraval was done at 'chinnanchiru padangaL silambolithiDumE' and svarams were sung. after svarams in madhyamAvati, the line was taken up again for neraval in tODi for a few Avartanams, and svarams were sung in tODi only to lead to a caraNam from tAyE yashOdha.. and similarly came hindOLam and a couple of other rAgams before coming back to madhyamAvati. If this is what she did off a kriti, i m not surprised at the pallavi..

as member rohitd pointed out rightly - i have sung pallavis with the words strung from the beginning words of kritis -eg- vinayaka(hamsadwani)vallabha nayaka(begada) gajanana yutha(chakravakam) gananayaka(poorna sadjam)siddhi(shanmugapriya)-i sang the pallavi in hamsadwani and sang ragamalika swaras in the different ragas ending in the different word "eduppus " correctly-thereby giving a new sheen to ragamalika swaras instead of the usual method
balagopala santhana gopala was another one i did
ragupathe raguvira rara rajakumara - another one- all many years ago -
incidentally i am well - known for resurrecting the art of pallavi- singing-when it was actually dying out --in 1979 im saying-and i have innovated to bring in fresh ideas - like melakartha thalams, desh ragam pallavi- with emphasis on the "word- "desh- meaning- country-of course for the 50thyear of independent India- i can safely state that i do stick to certain norms always- and i innovate because i feel like it- -i get some flashes of inspiration- but i dont do it just for the sake of doing some gimmicks or as a compulsion -i am a creative artiste and thrive on creativity like creative artistes all over the world
this year- i did the pallavi in atana- mohana rama- lavanya rama- rama rama guna seema - dasaratha nandana- daasarathee rama-
when i took up mohanam swaras- and ended on mohana ragam- i saw some people having a confused expression on their faces- immediately- i sang' mohana rama- mukajitha soma''- thus indicating from which song i sang the words-'' mohana rama ''
then after poorna sadjam swaras - i sang lavanyarama- kannulara joodave- as i felt- that i had better sing the three words just to clear doubts among rasikas- i rest my case- charumathi ramachandran

It is a great feeling to see artists take time and respond in this manner.

And also thanks to people behind this forum for making this all happen

This topic has made a very interesting read and what has been started by harimau with good humour, spirit and stead, a very fair summation, of some concerts we choose to attend with expectations. Its indeed very nice of Ms. Charumathi Ramachandran to have seen this in the rite spirit (feedback is very important for every professional - one must hear things out and then either take it or leave it, with clarifications, if required) and offered to clarify.

Such participation is also in a way a kind of guidance to the group when they happen to get a little carried away by personal perceptions. Then the forum gains respectability as an educative and interactive one where there is mutual education between the artist and the rasika, and not one of just a coffee table conversation.

Thank you Ms. Ramachandran.

Thanks very much Smt. Charumathi for providing the context of these pallavI-s. It is great to have you on rasikas.org, and it would fantastic if you would also consider sharing your thoughts on rAga lakShaNas on the forum http://rasikas.org/forums/forum3-raga-alapana.html and the Tala/Laya forum http://rasikas.org/forums/forum4-tala-laya.html

Thanks also to fellow rasika Rohit Dhamankar for inviting Smt. Charumathi Ramachandran to this forum.

Was just listening to MLV's RTP with the pallavi line 'lambOdhara' in Suddha dhanyASi and all panca ratna kruti rAgams and chanced upon this post of that great one's disciple!

Respected Smt. Ramachandran: I recall a concert of yours for Music Circle in Kolkata, perhaps in the late 70s, in which you had sung an RTP in Keeravani raaga and in a tala by the same name.. Would be much obliged if you would kindly inform and educate us on those rare talas. Many thanks,

Nandagopal

.."Her abhang renditions are decently good and appeal to simple minds...."

I prefer the simple mind - feel drawn to the spiritual connect when abhangs are sung with devotion.

Not all the classicism, laya and esoteric whatnot purists rave about in what *they* see as CM renders a fraction of the same essence of bhakti contained both in the *simple* words and *simple* but moving renditions of the abhangs, as sung by Aruna-ji.

rajeshnat had written some time ago about a RTP (Todi) that Aruna Sairam had rendered. The Pallavi was
"thyAgarAjaya namaste guruguhAya shyamakrishnAya" .

I have often noticed that minor 'grammatical mistakes' creep in in (Sanskrit) Pallavi-s. In the above Pallavi, 'guruguhaaya' and 'shyamarishnaaya' seem to be adjectives for Tyagaraja because of the absence of any conjunction. it may however be argued that it is a 'highly insignificant lapse'!

Old time Pallavi-s in the languages have been Error free.

Musicians may consult any sanskrit knowing person before singing in concerts.

I did not have patients to read all the comments... You all know that it's not worth when it comes to Aruna Sairams concert. Aruna Sairam MA 2010 concert was a nightmare. The RTP had no calculations. Sorry to tell you ... I need to see her singing carnatic music again. She was a mind blowing carnatic vocalist few years back. Now she seems to be running behind madu meikkum kanne (lost in search of crowd, fame and attention from public).

I so liked that u attended two DQ concerts @ Aruna and TMK :P TSK TSK
