Re: Phd in music
Congratulations Dr. Viji Subramaniam. When time permits, could you please elaborate, post details of the defense. Who were the panel of judges. The types of questions that were asked and of course most importantly, what was the topic of your doctoral defense.
Once again congratulations

Re: Phd in music
"defended" sounds as if somebody was attacking it! Maybe that is what it is like, in the academic world, to attain this exalted degree?
Congratulations, Doctor --- and do please tell us about your thesis

Not attacking, but challenging everything about it....and the candidate defends their position. This defense is as much a part of the degree as is the thesis itself.Nick H wrote:"defended" sounds as if somebody was attacking it!

Congratulations, Dr Vijayalakshmi....as cmlover has requested, please do provide details of your thesis...
On the "defending" front, is this the operative word when it comes to submitting a thesis for a doctorate? Or is it some thing like Hindu's use of expressions like "girl relieved of her chain", "thieves at large", "she is delivered of a baby"!

A doctoral thesis is always defended. Some, but not all, masters level theses are also defended.Sam Swaminathan wrote:On the "defending" front, is this the operative word when it comes to submitting a thesis for a doctorate?

Re: Phd in music
Having been on the examination committee of several Ph.Ds I am still curious about the opertion of the Music Ph.D; whether the theory or practice takes the front seat..(indeed have no doubts about your performing skills...). Also have an intellectual curiosity about your choice of topic...

Not having gone to that academic level myself , ( although two of
my children and a son in law can add Ph.D. to their names)I utilise my only option and pray to Sri Rama to bestow HIS choicest blessings on Sow.Vijayalakshmi

Congrats Smt Vijayalakshmi.
I Looked at the website of smt Vijayalakshmi Subramaniam , where the topic of her Phd is mentioned
Thesis topic: "Tamil Composers of the Twentieth Century"
The dissertation involved assimilation and documentation of Tamil Composers and a critical analysis of the musical and lyrical value of their compositions

Thanks Vidya Raja and PB
The thesis looks quite interesting and I hope it will be published.
It appears to be a sgnificant contribution to Tamil Isai..
Here is my prediction... Very soon we will congratulate Kalanidhi (Dr(in Tamil)) KalaimAmaNi Vijayalakshmi Subramaniam
with Sangita Kalanidhi yet to come in a few years...
God Bless Her!

Re: Phd in music
Thank you .... I am overwhelmed by your affection
Thank you also for posting my abstract--- that I had meant to do soon but have been travelling a bit. The topic was actually suggested by Shri S Rajam as he felt significant work hadn't been done on this front. I missed him at the Viva
It was a fairly voluminous work as it encompasses a whole century! But it has been most interesting and rewarding. I also got to interact with some of the composers. I felt very blessed to have Prof. SRJ as my examiner. His enthusiasm and scholarship are amazing! It made my day that he had very nice things to say about my thesis-- well deserved, hard earned and monumental work:)
I would be happy to answer any questions re my work.
Thank you once again!

Re: Phd in music
Congratulations Dr. Smt. Vijayalakshmy Subramaniam.
There is a long lingering doubt in my mind.
The Sangam age grammatical work Tolkappiyam mentions music relating to the five landscapes (Kurinchi, Mullai, Neithal, Palai and Marudam.) associated with various musical moods.
Tolkappiyam also mentions the musical form known as Paattu Vannam and also different types of songs like Asiriapattu, Neduven pattu, Adivarai, Seer, Ahaval Osai and Vellosai.
Which of the composition relate to the above. Can you identify ?
warm regards,
venkatakailasam
