Devar Varuga RagamS & Lyrics pl

Post by Sundar Krishnan »

1) Wrt this song "Devar Varuga", I would like to know :
- the Lyrics
- the various Ragams of this Ragamalika (ie, diff Ragams of the Pallavi, CharanamS etc) as it is popularly sung (for eg, by Ranjani & Gayatri)
- the Taalam

I assume that the composer is Shri Subramanya Bharati ?

*****************

2) I would like to know if there are any other links which provide lyrics of Shri Subramanya Bharati's lyrics - other than the foll, which I have already seen :
- http://www.karnatik.com/co1072.shtml

Thanks in advance.

...

*****************

PS : A search wrt SB in this website yielded :
http://www.rasikas.org/forums/viewtopic.php?f=13&t=1410 which lists this song as one in a Kutcheri.

Another related SB link in this site :
http://www.rasikas.org/forums/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=10031

Also found mention of song : "Suttum Vizhi" listed in :
http://www.charsur.com/charsur/index.ph ... _id='1246',
but would like to have Lyrics of this song too.
[I know that only one Lyric request per msg is often emphasized, but since this is of the same composer ... so, upto you.]

http://rasikas.org/forums/viewtopic.php? ... &view=next mentions :
http://www.musicalnirvana.com/script/sh ... a+Bharathi
but does not yield anything useful, atleast now ?, spl wrt these songs.

Pratyaksham Bala,

While we are on "Suttum Vizhi" song, a related request in an other thread :

In http://www.rasikas.org/forums/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=7683, Nandy had requested in Dec 08 for the Ragams of this song, sung by UnniKrishnan.

In http://www.charsur.com/charsur/index.ph ... _id='1246', the listing says that SG has sung it in Ragam RatiPatiPriya.
But unfortunately, it does not state the Taalam for most songs ! - as if often the trend in many cases.

...

*************************

PS : Do you have any sites for the Lyrics of Subramanya Bharati's songs - OTHER than :

a) http://puducherry.com/bharathiar/

b) http://www.projectmadurai.org/pm_etexts ... i0049.html

I have stated the problems faced in the first case in :
http://www.rasikas.org/forums/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=15883 - pl refer Post No 3.

In the 2nd case above, the fonts are all displayed in Tamil.
Then, how do I make a search for key words of a certain song - say "Kayile PuLippadenne" ?
In the Find Dialog Box, I can type in English font, but since the text is in Tamil, how do I ... ?
Also, I am very slow in reading Tamil (there will be many who cannot read Tamil) ; I would rather prefer Sanskrit (there is no ambiguity in Sanskrit as in Tamil, where one needs to apriori know the exact pronounciation of the word in order to be able to read it correctly), or Transliterated English (only as a 2nd choice).

The problem with Sanskrit though, is that we have to take care of Tamil letter "zh".

************

However, take the example of http://www.kaumaram.com/1contents.html. Here, since they have displayed the text in BOTH Tamil and English, there is no problem in searching for text-strings.

Sundar Krishnan:
For searching in projectmadurai site which is in Tamil, you have to use 'Tamil words'. Try http://www.google.com/transliterate/ where you can type in English to get Tamil words.

Or, post a request here and someone will come forward to help!

You need not hesitate. Ask for as many songs as you may require. But, for each song that you need, please start a separate thread.

Mods: You may consider moving post #5 to a separate thread.

In Post #1 as well as #3, I had already stated that "Suttum Vizhi" is indeed a separate song ... :

"[I know that only one Lyric request per msg is often emphasized, but since this is of the same composer ... so, upto you.]"

******************

Pratyaksham Bala,

Since I am not so fluent in Tamil, the procedure of trying the Tamil word via "Transliteration" (like the google site you mentioned), takes a lot of time. Below, I give 2 examples and the steps that I took.

This is what I tried :

As an experiment, I looked for an "already available" word in http://www.projectmadurai.org/pm_etexts ... i0049.html like say : "சுற்று".
Then, in the webpage : http://www.google.com/transliterate/, I typed a word in English font, and after a few trials, I got the correct matching Tamil word. Here are the 2 trials that I went through :

chuttRu gave : சுட்டறு

[BTW, even chuttru gave the same சுட்டறு ? ;
But, with a single letter 'r' or 'R', both yield 'ர'.
So, how do we get the other Tamil 'R' = ற ? ]

chutRRu gave the correct word I wanted to search further : சுற்று

Another word I tried similarly, by hit and trial, via the webpage : http://www.google.com/transliterate/, is : "பொன்னவிர்".
Below, I have referred to this 'n' as 'n2'.

So, you see, that until I become an "expert" at knowing which fonts yield the desired words, this is going to be a long drawn out effort !

Imagine the effort for others who may have lesser proficiency in Tamil than mine.

******************

Can we do the reverse ie, if I copy and paste a complete Paragraph (or even a whole page) of Tamil Text say from http://www.projectmadurai.org/pm_etexts ... i0049.html, how can we get the English Transliteration for it ? ie, here, we are seeking Tamil Text (copied from a site) -> English font.
If we can do this, I can learn this exercise faster.

******************

That is why, in Post #7, under "PS", I had requested for "direct, straight forward" websites with Lyrics of Subramanya Bharati's songs - OTHER than the 2 sites where fonts are a problem, and we may have to go via an elaborate process as explained.
I gave an example of an easier site : kaumaram site, where they display the text in both English and Tamil.

******************

In Post #7, I mentioned that we need to accommodate Tamil's "zh" in Sanskrit fonts.
In the Tamil -> Sanskrit exercise, in addition to "zh", we also need to accommodate 3 more fonts for differentiating between 2 'n's ('n' itself has n1 (= ந) and n2 (ன), in addition to N (ண)), 2 'r's (ர vs ற) and 2 'l's (ல vs ள) in Tamil.

ல - ल (n) : ள - ळ (N)
வ - व (b) : ழ - ऴ (B)
ந - न (v) : ன - ऩ (V)
ர - र (j) : ற - ऱ (J)

In the Unicode scheme, Devanagari Script is super-set of Indian Language Scripts.

Using google-transliterate site may not be of much use for people who do not know Tamil. For someone who knows Tamil, it is a blessing. When we click on the transliterated Tamil word, it offers a number of options from which we can select the appropriate word. Also, for using the site, one has to re-learn how to type Tamil words in English, e.g. naan instead of nan or nAn for நான்; chutru for சுற்று; pattam for பட்டம், and paththu for பத்து, etc.

If you cut and paste the transliterated text, you have to start from the beginning and after the end of each word you have to tap the space bar to get the Tamil text. But this will not be of much use, as the type of transliteration that we are using here is different from what is warranted by the site.

Extar Chars for Tamil -> Sanskrit

Post by Sundar Krishnan »

vgovindan, Thanks for yr Post #10.
Wrt the last point in my Post # 9, it appears that you have covered all the EXTRA alphabets that Sanskrit needs for Tamil -> Sanskrit conversion.

BTW, Marathi also has a form of the 2nd “l” {= ळ (N) (char taken from yr Post #10)}.

*********************

Pratyaksham Bala, Wrt yr Post # 11, you seem to have only confirmed my problems wrt sites which have Tamil fonts.
That is why it’s not of much direct immediate use to people like me, when some readers request us to refer to sites such as the 2 sites, I have cited above, for Lyrics info.

You have provided me recently with lyrics of 2 SB’s songs – in transliterated English. Thanks.
But, could you pl let me know what yr source is. Is it from a Text Book, or from any website
(other than the 2 sites we have talked about) ?

***********

You have stated :
"If you cut and paste the transliterated text, you have to start from the beginning, and after the end of each word, you have to tap the space bar to get the Tamil text."

By this, am I to infer that my "reverse option" too is practically not feasible when we would like to say, copy a whole page of Tamil Text, and seek English Transliteration ?

***********

And BTW, on the lighter side, I am not in the category of those who cannot read Tamil at all - just that I am slow since I don't read Tamil daily. But my Tamil writing speed is extremely slow - in fact, for some spl chars, I have to fumble and search from my "ref char set" to write the correct alphabet ! And since the hand-writing is itself so slow, it becomes even more difficult to search for Tamil text using the Find Dlg Box. There will probably be many like me who can speak Tamil, but not read (or read slowly like me), or write Tamil (or write very slowly like me) - some even in this forum group possibly.

The transliteration was done by me.
There are a number of sources for the songs of Bharati.

For Tamil songs Bharati and a few others, check this site: http://www.chennailibrary.com/

From http://www.tamilcube.com/res/tamil_ebooks.html you can download the pdf version.

If you need transliterated version of any particular song, post a request in a new thread. There are rasika members who will be able to help you.

sundar,
I have a multi-function software developed in Visual Basic, which includes conversion of HK (Harvard Kyto) convention characters into Tamil (Unicode). This is not interactive. It requires an Input Text file and an output file. If you have VB6 with you, I can send this program to you. Otherwise, I will have to compile and send to you .exe file. But .exe files cannot be ported across email.

vgovindan,

Thanks for yr help.

I don’t have VB / VC++ etc now !

What if we zip it with a Pwd, which we both mutually agree ?

I have tried this out successfully 2 or 3 times (in 2008, I guess) when I had to send some files to Norman for their analysis, plain files which Yahoo email will definitely not allow.

So, if you are willing, perhaps, you can use WinRar (or WinZip), then set the Pwd by going into the Tab "Advanced".
Let us try with the Pwd : Tamil_HK_VB_VG

To avoid any later confusions, it may be a good idea to thoroughly test this exe file at yr end before sending it. You may also test it out first by sending the exe file to yr own self email ; if everything is successful, you may send it to me, and also perhaps, post it to sendspace, from where, other interested perosns could pick this up.

Thanks in advance for yr help and efforts.

Pratyaksham Bala,

In Post #13 above, you wrote :
"If you need transliterated version of any particular song, post a request in a new thread. There are rasika members who will be able to help you."

So, I give here below some of my still pending queries :

1) I had submitted a request for the Lyrics, alternate RagamS, TaalamS etc of an other SB song :
karpaga vinayakA kadavule potri
in : http://www.rasikas.org/forums/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=15873
on 6th Mar 11.

Since popular singers seem to have sung this song in 3 diff Ragams, I wonder if some more alternate Ragams are there.

************************

2) Similarly, another request of mine - on pAN to Ragam equivalence ? - is still unanswered :
http://www.rasikas.org/forums/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=15780
In the site http://www.shaivam.org/gallery/audio/sat_pp2.htm, the 99 Tevaram songs' Audio clips seem to be categorised into 25 or 26 or 27 pANs, and a for a few of the pANs, I have given my guess of the equivalent contemporary Ragam name.

As known from ancient Tamil Granthams, I would like to first know if there is an equivalence at all between pANs and the current day Ragams, and if so, possibly a more exhaustive list of this Table of equivalence, perhaps, even beyond the 25 or 26 or 27 pANs that I could gather from that site.

************************

3) In Post # 22 of http://www.rasikas.org/forums/viewtopic.php?f=10&t=148, wrt Post #13 where Lyrics of "nitya pUjalivivO - mALavigauLa" has been posted, I had requested for the Ar / Av details of "mALavigauLA" Ragam.
It was later clarified that the Taalam is Adi Taalam.

Thanks in advance.

Thanks for your suggestion about PW + zip. I was thinking on the same lines. Give me some time to tailor it to your requirments, including, possibly, 'interactive'. This could be useful for others too.
