Anandam pongum inba tAnDavam

ind(i)ra devarum chand(i)ra sur(i)yanum
satatam paNi inbam koLLavE
nandi mattaLam tOm tOm ena muzhangiDa

koDuttAn should really be "koDuttAnai" since it precedes " pughazhndu paNindiDuvOm"

koDuttavanai - can it be the same as koDuttAnai?

Ravi and mahAkavi - can koDuttAnai be split as koDuttavan + tannai? In that case there are both same. Right?

Yes! However, the subject is koDuttavan . It can also take the form of koDuttAn (both a verb and a noun). The 2nd vERRumai (derivative) makes it koDuttAnai.

It is similar to aLandAn being a verb as well as noun. The 2nd vERRumai will make it aLandAnai

To bolster the above explanation:

kollAn pulAlai maRuttAnaik kaikUppi
ellA uyirum tozhum
(Meaning: He who does not kill and avoids eating meat is the one every lifeform will worship/praise)
tirukkuraL 26.10

Here maRuttAn (one who refuses/avoids) is used as a noun. When it is used as a verb, it should be at the end of the sentence. The vERRumai is affixed only to the noun (Of course I am stating the obvious here)

Thanks for all your help. THere are actually 5 stanzas to this Stuthi. In the second stanza what is the meaning of UgandAn in the line

pulittOl karittOl ugandAN koDutAn
pugazhndu paNindiDuvOm...

ugandAn = one who likes.
He likes pulittOl (tiger hide), karittOl (elephant hide?)

mandirkkugandadu = that which the heart (mind) likes

The grammatical term for the forms like "koDuttAn" is vinaiyAlaNaiyum peyar" ( ie, the noun that comes from a verb)

In Thiruppavai " vallAnai konRAnai" means in the "one who killed the strong elephant(val+Anai) " referring to Krishna killing kuvalayApIda , the elephant sent by Kamsa.

Thanks for all your input. I figured out the lyrics for the rest of the Shiva stuthi from a very bad quality tape that I had. I have put a few ****** next to the lines in which I could not get the words right and hence the meaning of the line doesnt make sense to me. Please help me figure out the correct words and their meaning. The lyrics are not transliterated.

Thanks for the quick reply. I'm looking to get the exact meaning to choreograph a dance. I did translate a little. But some of the words seemed to have rather an inner meaning to it. I did not want to bluff with the beautiful song. I think this is how the song goes. Somebody had alresdy posted the lyrics if you see the thread.

Suprabhatam - you've just reposted the lyrics that Nrityam had transcribed - they are not clear in several places. If you have the audio link, please point to it, and someone will help with transcribing the lyrics correctly...
