Request: nadamADi lyrics and meaning
This is sung by T.M. Krishna on his December Season 2009 CD. It is in rAgam kAmbhoji. The composer listed is Paapavinaasa Mudaliyaar. The first words sounds like, "nadamADi thirintha" but when I google this I get only references to a similar-named song by a different composer, and no lyrics. Any help appreciated.

Gladfan, here you go:Gladfan wrote:Can someone kindly provide the meaning for this song? Thanks.
This absolutely beautiful composition is structured as a series of questions to lord Siva (almost as a nindA stuti, but steeped in concern), asking him why he keeps his left foot raised all the time. Is it because it hurts, or does he not plant it on the ground in order to spare pArvati, who occupies the left half of his body, from bearing his weight?
pallavi
naDamADit tirinda umakku iDadukAl udavAmal
muDamAnadEn enDRu sholluvIraiyA
My Lord (ayyA) who roams around (tirinda) dancing (naDamADi), pray tell (solluvIr) why (yEn/En enDru) your (umadu) left (iDadu) foot/leg (kAl) has become (Anadu) crippled (muDam) and useless (udavAmal).
anupallavi

Oh lord (dEvA) who danced (AdinavA) with abandon/supreme bliss (pErAnanda), with your matted locks (SaDai) left undone (virittu) in the city (nagar) of cidambaram (tillai) with manifest (mEvum) vigor/vitality (diDam), (pray tell…) so that the entire audience in this hall of wisdom/sacred dancing hall (citsabhai/ciRsabhai) is able to comprehend (aRiya).

(Did your leg become crippled and useless because) you carried (SumandIrO) sacred ashes/vibhUti (tirunIrai)? Or, is it because of excessive (migunda) windy humor (vAtaguNamO) in your body caused by the play of the cold (SitattinAl) [1] on your fiery hot (neruppAna) body (mEnitanil)? Or, did your sprain it (SuLukkEriyuNDa guNamO) when you, out of concern/in unity (orumaiyuDan) went to help (udaviyAy) mArkaNDan (mArkaNDarukku) and kicked (udaikka) yama (marali) to the ground (vizha – to fall)? Or, did the doorstep (teruvASarppADi) hit your foot (iDaRiTRO) when you went as a messenger to the lady, paravai nAcchiyAr's house [2]? Or, is it my (endan) fault/sin (pAvamO), my (en) Lord (SivanE), the one who is supreme/first (mudalvan enDru) among the trinity (mUvarkkum) (pray tell…)?

Did you hurt (nondaduvO) your foot when a knot (muDi) was dislocated (piSagi) in a joint (SandilE) when you took a beating (aDipaTTu) in a battle (Samaril) with (uDan) arjuna (dhananjeya mahipan), and fell down (vizha) [3]? Or, tell (Sollum) me, did a thorn (muLLu) pierce your foot (ERuNDadO) when you had to roam (tirindadil) all over (engum) the dAruka forest (vanam) in your attempt to investigate (puriyum) the clan (inam) of dIkshitas there [4]? Or, did it get twisted/broken (muRindaduvO) when those that watched (kaNDOrgaL) your dancing (naTanam) in (tanil) the golden (kanaka) hall (sabhai) in wonder (adiSaiyikka) cast evil eyes (kaNNeNDRuNDadO)? Oh lord (mudalvan) of even the gods (viNNavarkkum), (pray tell..) that (eNDRu)…

Did your foot stay (ninDRaduvO) raised (tUkki) to show that (eNDRu) this (idu) is the Supreme (parama) foot (padam) that destroys (nASamAgum) the sins (pApa) [5] of devout/pious (bhakti Seyyum) and great men (periyOrgaL)? Or, did your (left) foot hesitate (tayangi ninDRaduvO) to plant itself (aDivaikka) on the floor (taraiyil) because of the possibility to hurt (nOgumenDRE) the foot (tanpAdam) of your consort, Sakti, the beautiful SivakAmavalli [6]? Or, oh lord (adhipati) of the SatyalOka, did it stay (ninDRaduvO) raised (tUkki) as part of your steps/dance (naTam tAngiyE) in time with/appropriate for (ERpa) the rhythm (tALattiRku)?
[1] Cold here refers to the waters of the gangA
[2] Refers to the three times Siva went as a messenger to paravai nAcciyAr – a dancing girl that sundaramUrti nAyanAr fell in love with – Siva serves as the messenger between them and brokers their wedding; later on, when paravai nAcciyAr refuses to meet sundarar because he had married another woman, sangili nAcciyAr, Siva, once again goes to paravai nAcciyAr's house, not once, but twice to bring about a reconciliation
[3] Refers to the story when arjuna finds himself in competition with another 'hunter' (Siva) in pursuit of a wild boar
[4] Refers to the story of how lord Siva came to cidambaram/dArukA vanam
[5] A beautiful insertion of the composer's mudra (pApanASa)
[6] pArvati occupies the left half of Siva's body (and his left leg is the one that is traditionally held aloft)

Great work as always, Ravi. Do you think 'satyalOka adhipati' in C3 could mean Lord Brahma (Siva dancing to Brahma's drum beats)?

Re: Request: nadamADi lyrics and meaning
Thank you so much. This is a brilliant song, both lyrically and musically. It's a shame it isn't performed very often.
A quick question - is the composer pApaviNAsa mudaliar or papanAsa mudaliar? And what else did he compose, other than Mukhatthai Kaati?
